Far From Old-Fashioned, These 11 Lavender Perfumes Are Fresh, Calm and Modern
Don’t write off this underrated note, because the best lavender fragrances are uplifting, elegant and expensive-smelling.
I used to think of lavender as a scent with two very specific jobs—something to be misted onto my pillow to help nudge me towards sleep after a particularly stressful day, or tucked into linen drawers like my mum and hers before her to keep towels and bedding smelling faintly floral. Would I consider it a contender for one of the best perfumes? Lavender felt, if I’m honest, a little too prim and powdery for me: something that my nan might wear. And, look, I’m not here to judge what kinds of fragrances people love. I, for instance, absolutely adore rose perfumes—another note with a reputation more associated with our grandparents’ generation. However, there is something to be said for wanting to smell modern and exciting rather than nostalgic.
“Lavender has definitely had a reputation for being more herbal or soap-like… its calming aromatherapeutic qualities are widely known, and when people think of lavender, there’s usually less association with fine fragrance and more with scented products like soaps and oils,” Phway Su Aye, fo-Founder of contemporary fragrance house Gabar explains. However, Su Aye points out that thanks to its “multifaceted nature” lavender undoubtedly has a place within wearable fragrance too.
Enter: a new wave of perfumers who are reimagining lavender entirely, pairing it with bright citruses and creamy woods to create fragrances that feel fresh, dynamic, and absolutely nothing to do with bedtime.
How to Choose a Lavender Fragrance
While you might expect lavender to be a bit of a one-hit wonder (I always thought of it as a sleepy scent) Su Aye explains that it’s actually a really complex note. “Lavender is interesting for its many layers—it’s floral but also herbal and green, yet also somewhat light and powdery,” she says. It’s this multifaceted nature that means it actually works really well with a whole range of notes and means it will appeal to a more modern perfume wearer.
“We have been excited about modern scents reconstructing lavender and using it in more creative and interesting juxtapositions,” Su Aye explains. “We’ve seen lavender being used unexpectedly in gourmands, being paired with more green and bright notes to bring out its freshness, or even being daringly paired with deeper, more atmospheric notes, like leathers and smoke. It’s fun when an ‘older’ scent note can be reintroduced in different ways.”
Ahead, we’re sharing the best lavender fragrances that prove just how versatile this note can be. Whether you like an airy skin scent or a bold power perfume, each of these scents offers a new twist on a familiar smell—and makes a compelling case for lavender as the scent of spring 2026.
Best Lavender Fragrances
- Best gourmand lavender fragrance: Burberry Goddess Eau de Parfum (£99)

1. Burberry Goddess Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Vanilla, lavender
I’d consider this a brilliant gateway to lavender fragrances if you’re on the fence, as it’s anchored in a creamy vanilla base, which means it feels instantly familiar and comforting, but with the benefit of an unexpected aromatic twist. Sure, if you’re not a fan of sweet gourmands, then this might not appeal, but the beauty of infusing lavender into this almost honeyed vanilla scent means that the sweetness never becomes too cloying. In fact, it’s an incredibly wearable perfume that feels light, bright and elegant and would work just as well for a special occasion as it does every day.
2. Yves Saint Laurent Libre Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Tangerine, neroli, lavender, jasmine sambac, orange blossom, white musks, vanilla extract
About as far from your granny’s perfume as you can get, this is a lavender fragrance that really packs a punch. So if you want a scent that enters a room before you do, then I’d recommend giving this a sniff. The blend of orange blossom and vanilla is a really classic combination, but the herbaceous lavender cuts through the sweetness to give it a really contemporary edge. It’s glamorous, bold and the exact opposite of a sleepy scent. And while I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan of classic florals, Libre feels fresh, exciting and uplifting from the very first spritz.
3. Phlur Honey Moon Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Mandarin, lavender, orange blossom, manuka honey, saffron, tonka, vanilla bean, sandalwood
Phlur are one of my favourite contemporary fragrance houses for the way that they constantly innovate and push boundaries with their use of scent. This is their newest launch, and it’s the very perfume that got me digging deeper about lavender fragrances. It’s a beautifully hazy floral that conjures images of walking through a flower garden in Provence during the height of summer. The earthier notes of sandalwood, saffron and tonka give it an almost skin-like warmth, whilst lavender, orange blossom and mandarin provide a veil of soapy softness. It’s soft, pretty and utterly addictive.
4. Jo Malone London Silver Birch & Lavender Cologne
Key notes: Grapefruit, English lavender, silver birch
This is lavender at its crispest and cleanest. Imagine stepping into an evergreen forest on a spring morning and taking a big breath—it has that cool, airy woodiness that instantly calms and clears the mind. For me, this is a perfume that I’d reach for when I want something that feels light, refined and uplifting without it overpowering. It’s unfussy in the best way: a clarifying perfume that almost feels like a layer of protection on days where you might otherwise be feeling a little frazzled. It's a beautiful Jo Malone fragrance.
5. M&S Apothecary Relax Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Lavender, clary sage, white cedar, amber
I was concerned that, due to its name, this M&S fragrance could easily smell like a pillow spray rather than a proper perfume, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Sure, it’s a grounding and gentle fragrance that’s packed with calming lavender, but the blend of warm white cedar and rich amber means it’s far more elevated than your typical sleep scent. In fact, this is a really chic perfume that smells way more expensive than its price point. A great option for laidback days when you still want a perfume that helps you feel put-together.
6. Le Labo Lavande 31 Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Lavender, bergamot, neroli, amber, musk, tonka
An undeniably cool take on lavender comes in the form of this unexpected scent from Le Labo—a brand that’s renowned for its cult fragrances. It’s a sharp, clarifying, almost slightly metallic scent with nothing sleepy about it at all. Once it dries into your skin, it does soften into something slightly more musky and smoky, but nobody will mistake you for wearing a classic floral here. It’s stripped back, contemporary and the perfect perfume for someone who doesn’t typically love wearing perfume thanks to its minimalist feel.
7. Chloé Atelier des Fleurs Sable Lavande Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Bergamot, cardamom, fig accord, clary sage, lavender, ambrofix, georgywood
A true homage to lavender in its purest form, this fragrance is the result of perfumer Quentin Bisch attempting to bottle the spirit of the Mediterranean in its most natural form. The result is a solar-drenched lavender that's delicate, aromatic and with a softness that smells almost like clean skin. I love how warm and modern it smells, and I can just imagine dousing myself fresh from the shower after a day spent at the beach, ready to enjoy a beachside stroll at dusk.
8. Chanel Boy Les Exclusifs De Chanel Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Lavender, geranium, wood
Inspired by one of Gabrielle Chanel’s greatest loves and muses, Boy Capel, this is an optimistically woody scent that defies time and gender. Smooth, slightly powdery and grounded, it’s an alluring lavender scent with a gentle warmth that feels incredibly chic. It’s unmistakably a Chanel perfume too—with a timelessness that means you feel like you’re wearing a classic fragrance, despite it being only 10 years old. Yes, it’s expensive, but for a polished perfume that will never date, it’s worth the investment.
9. Gabar 04 (NOLITA) Rise Eau de Parfum
Key Notes: Juniper, pink pepper, green mandarin, lavender, cypress, mint, lily of the valley, amberwoods, cashmere woods, cedarwood
A truly modern perfume, this is a bright and airy lavender scent that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. “We were so excited to use lavender as a key note here, pairing it with hints of juniper and mint to bring out its fresh qualities as well as leaning into its floral aspects by also having it with lily of the valley,” says Su Aye. “The end result is a luxurious, spa-like fragrance but also something light, airy and on the skin.” It’s natural, fresh and smells like spring mornings.
10. Maison Margiela Replica Bubble Bath Eau de Toilette
Key notes: Soap bubbles, pink pepper, bergamot, lavender flower, rose, jasmine, patchouli, coconut milk, white musk
This bottles the feeling of stepping out of a rolltop bath in a luxury hotel, skin still slick with expensive suds, and then enveloping yourself in a warm, fluffy towel. It’s lavender at its most comforting, yet still feels completely modern. Clean, cosy and soapy in the best way, the hints of rose, jasmine and soft musk make this a perfume to reach for when you want to feel pampered and polished.
11. Zara Pétale d’Ambre Parfum
Key notes: Bergamot, lemon, amber, lavender, lily of the valley, nutmeg, soft woods, patchouli
This is a richer, more ambery take on lavender that feels cosy and slightly addictive. The warmth of amber and soft florals gives it a glow that makes it feel way more expensive than it is, and the lavender adds just enough freshness to keep it balanced. It’s an easy, everyday option with plenty of depth. Oh, and this Zara perfume was created in collaboration with Jo Malone CBE, so you’re basically getting all of the expertise of a luxury perfumer at a high-street price.
