All The Music, TV, and Movies You Need To Know Right Now
As the Entertainment Director at Who What Wear, I’m lucky to be surrounded by style--believe me, I need the help! So when my fellow editors ask me what they should be watching or listening to as they lounge around in their bandeau bikinis or overalls, I’m happy to share my pop wisdom. Check out our July must-watch, must-see, and must-hear picks, and I guarantee your witty culture banter will make you the hit of the summer cocktail party circuit!
Must-Hear Music: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
?It’s only fitting that a band made for outdoor festival listening should release their third, eponymous full-length during the summer (on July 23rd, to be exact), when we all can relax on a blanket, jumping up when the spirit moves us to dance and enjoy the sunny ‘70s jam rock.
Must-Hear Music: Magna Carta Holy Grail, Jay-Z
?With Beyoncé on her Mrs. Carter tour, Mr. Carter is finally ready to show the world some of his most creative work since Blue Ivy was born. Magna Carta Holy Grail, which features cameos by Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Nas, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell, and Timbaland, drops on July 4th for Samsung Galaxy owners, July 7th for the rest of us.
Must-Hear Music: Stars Dance, Selena Gomez
?Selena’s already blowing up our jams with “Come & Get It” this summer (hint: blast it top volume with the windows down; it’s better that way), so we can wait for her full-length, which will be available on the 23rd.
Must-Hear Music: Blurred Lines, Robin Thicke
?Can’t stop listening--and rocking out--to the infectious grooves of Robin Thicke’s summer scorcher “Blurred Lines?” Neither can we. His full-length of the same name, launching on the 30th, should inspire even more spontaneous dance parties and a complete inability to sit still for the duration of one of his songs.
Must-See Movie: Blue Jasmine
?Right now, Woody Allen is in the south of France filming his next masterpiece starring Emma Stone and Colin Firth (both new to the world of Woody). Lucky for us, he’s blessed us with a film hitting theatres on the 26th, Blue Jasmine--starring Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard, and Alec Baldwin--to keep us intelligently entertained while we neuroses-loving commonfolk wait for the next one.
Must-See Movie: The Way Way Back
?I’m a sucker for coming-of-agers, and this one, out on the 5th, doesn’t disappoint. Liam doesn’t think his life can get much more melancholy when his mum (Toni Collette) drags him to the beach for the summer with her boyfriend (Steve Carrell) and his teenage daughter (Zoe Levin). It all starts to turn around when he meets loveable loser Owen (Sam Rockwell).
Must-Watch TV: Orange is the New Black
?From the comically twisted brain of Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, Orange Is the New Black stars Taylor Schilling--who’s as gorgeous as she is talented--as the co-owner of a recently popular bath soap company who goes to prison to atone for one lifetime blip as a drug money mule. Netflix is so confident in this new series, which debuts on July 11th, that they’ve already renewed it for a second season--and it hasn’t even premiered yet! Who can blame them? Fresh off the success of their first original programming coup House of Cards, Neflix trades crisp Washington, DC power suits for orange jumpsuits in the prison dark comedy Orange is the New Black, based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name.
Must-Watch TV: The Bridge
?Diane Kruger makes her small screen debut in a big way with FX’s murder mystery The Bridge. The show--which debuts on July 10th--follows Detective Sonya Cross (Kruger) and her partner Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir) as they track a serial killer who’s operating on both sides of the border between Mexico and Texas.
Must-Watch TV: Camp
?In the grand tradition of flicks like Meatballs and Wet Hot American Summer and Nickelodeon’s series Salute Your Shorts, TV networks are going to camp this summer with two very different takes on the sleepaway experience. NBC bunks with Six Feet Under’s Rachel Griffiths in kitschy comedy Camp, premiering on the 10th, which follows the capers of campers and counselors at the about-to-go-under Little Otter Family Camp. USA takes it a step further with Summer Camp, a Survivor-esque reality show debuting on the 11th in which teams compete for dining hall domination--and a $250,000 prize.
