The "Ugly" Knitwear Trend You'll See Everywhere in 3 Months' Time

There is something so deliciously "ugly" about sweater vests. It's the jumper trend that is sweeping the nation (well, if not the nation, then the fashion community at least). Reminiscent of stuffy professors, teen movie nerds and, of course, Chandler from Friends, it is one of those items of clothing that has become synonymous with stereotypically uncool individuals. However, this year has been nothing but a jubilant a celebration of all things frumpy, with editors and influencers alike embracing the quirky appeal of homely knitwear and practical shoes.

It's safe to say that I have well and truly fallen for the sweater vest this season. I recently bought a cream oversized iteration from H&M and have been wearing it constantly over white shirts and cream roll-necks. It's a true layering hero. In my opinion, the trend looks its best when worn in the Scandi style (i.e., with clashing prints and retro blouses), but if the idea of this terrifies you, then worry not, because there are plenty of people wearing theirs in a more minimalist, pared-back fashion. Just look at Vens Wife Style, who looks the picture of elegance with a cream cable-knit number, jeans and Bottega heels.

Love it or hate it, the sweater vest is only set to get bigger, and I predict it'll be everywhere in 2020. So get ahead of the crowd this season and scroll down to see four winning sweater-vest outfits that come courtesy of my favourite influencers.

Style Notes: Marianne is the queen of the Scandi print clash, and this cool outfit is the perfect example of her styling skills. Her Fair Isle knit looks the part when paired with wide-leg trousers and a ruffle-collar shirt.

Style Notes: If you're less into the "professor" look, then take your cues from Pernille who sticks to a muted colour palette with a black knit, grey skinnys and black knee-high boots.

Style Notes: This is not an outfit for the fashion faint-hearted, but the principle remains: A sweater vest can look super chic over a dress. Just stick to the same colour palettes if you want a more minimalist finish.

Style Notes: Vens Wife Style might be wearing her knit sans blouse, but I know that this piece will look just as good with a long-sleeved top underneath (the sweater vest is a winning layering device). The wide-leg jeans are also ideal for balancing out the jumper's roomy proportions.

Style Notes: Ada is all about the eclectic pairings, and this is no exception. We seriously rate the throwback appeal of her checked-trousers–and–diamond-print-jumper duo, particularly when it comes with a pop of colour via her tee and socks.
