Before We Were Screaming Luxury, the Olsens Whispered It: 6 Staples They Rely On
Usually, if you scroll even a few years back on celebrity images in the void of Getty Images, you can guess which era each photo is in based on the clothes they're wearing. With Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the basic rules of time and trends do not apply. It was only when I clicked on an image and saw the 2015 date that I realized I was not staring at a street style image from the past year. Why? Before we were screaming buzzwords like "quiet luxury," "minimalism," and "anti-trend," the Olsen sisters were whispering it within their wardrobes.
Despite the Olsens' brand, The Row, being synonymous with the minimal and pared-back look everyone's itching to live up to currently, everything about their own style feels extremely personal. While some may be facing fatigue with the stereotypical quiet-luxury look all over the internet, anyone can knowingly acknowledge that nothing about the Olsens' style is boring or something to get tired of. After all, they're not just pushing simple pieces together. They treat clothes like a much more complex puzzle. With each outfit, they curate the perfect juxtaposition between high-end pieces and low-key items, like a Birkin bag paired with casual Adidas sneakers or a worn-in scarf thrown over a polished off-the-runway coat. They manage to incorporate eccentric trends among classic staples with ease. They constantly refer back to those key pieces they've maintained in their wardrobes for years, which keeps their looks timeless. These are the reasons why I can reference an almost 10-year-old outfit for what I want to wear in 2023.
Since I'm always taking notes of their style, I've rounded up the staples both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen depend on in their wardrobes and included my favorite outfits along with them. Keep scrolling to get your dose of Olsen fashions.
1. Flat Loafers
Chunky loafers may have been trending at one point, but the Olsen sisters have always opted for the sleeker and flatter option. That doesn't mean they don't like to play with trendier elements, as proven by Mary-Kate being spotted in metallic flat loafers recently.
2. Long Skirts
Sorry to all my miniskirt lovers, but the Olsens have always opted for longer skirt styles, and I don't predict they will be making a drastic change to that preference anytime soon.
3. Wayfarers
Sunglasses trends come and go, but classic Wayfarers are forever. I remember being completely in awe of this photo when it first hit the internet, and I still have the same gut reaction in 2023.
4. Structured Handbags
Although The Row has a few slouchier bag options, it's the oversize and structured bags that are usually picked up by the Olsens. (And they're always stuffed to the brim, as they should be!)
5. Maxi Coats
Despite being leaders in luxury, comfort is key to the Olsens. They add a cozy element to their outfits in the colder months with beanies, oversize scarves, and, of course, massive maxi coats.
6. Oversize Clutches
Their red carpet style usually consists of long-sleeve gowns or coats but always with a large clutch in tow.
