Fashion Girl–Approved Kentucky Derby Outfits
Kentucky Derby outfits tend to go a little something like this: Dress. Statement hat. Voilà. It's a classic formula that needn't be updated, but in case you're hoping to put an unconventional twist on your race day look, we're here to help.
While the Derby is the perfect occasion to bust out your most outlandish hat, accessories of the sort aren't necessarily required (though they're certainly encouraged). The vibe tends to skew overtly springy (think bright colors and festive prints) and a little bit preppy, which can be interpreted in a handful of ways. Here are five fashion girl–approved looks worthy of an appearance at Churchill Downs.
A-line silhouettes feel right at home for the Derby. Instead of a dress, try a high-waisted skirt styled with a crop top and blazer. The effect is still polished, albeit a little edgier than a traditional take.
Derby-goers love their minis, but a shirtdress, in particular, feels a little less expected than a typical skater silhouette. Styled with strappy sandals, it's a little bit boho and completely cool.
Hats are a pillar of race-going attire. A wide-brimmed straw version teamed with a gauzy dress is a more free-spirited take on the classic pairing.
Sherbet hues are a popular choice. Dial up the brightness by pairing a matching off-the-shoulder top and trousers and accessorizing with a wide-brimmed hat.
Jumpsuits and co-ord sets rise to the occasion when dresses just aren't cutting it. A neckerchief lends a subtle preppy vibe to the look.
The Kentucky Derby is this weekend, May 5, so get moving.
