9 Useful and Chic Items to Pack for Your Memorial Day Getaway
Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and that means we've reached the unofficial kickoff of summer. If you're celebrating by traveling somewhere fun and/or relaxing for the weekend, the first thing you'll need to do is pack. I hate packing, and the only thing that makes me dread it a little less is planning ahead so that I don't have to panic shop at the last minute. (We've all been there.)
You still have a bit of time to do some pre–Memorial Day shopping, so I thought I'd help out and provide you with some reminders and suggestions. These are not utilitarian suggestions—these are fun shopping suggestions such as hats and swimsuits. Retailers are in full-on summer mode at the moment, so the options are endless. I narrowed it way down and found you a few stellar options to shop for each Memorial Day weekend essential.
1. Linen Pants and Shorts
If you're not packing linen, is it even a summer trip? If you buy just one new linen piece this season, make it a pair of loose pants or shorts.
2. Hats
Baseball caps, raffia hats, and bucket hats may have once been trends, but now, they're summer staples. Stock up and enjoy the sun protection while looking chic.
3. Swimsuits
This one goes without saying. This season, I'm shopping for a cool one-piece and a black balconette bikini.
Shop the matching '90s High-Leg Bikini Bottom ($23).
4. Raffia Bags
Raffia bags are a no-brainer for summer, and there's no lack of options at every price point.
5. Sandals
As far as sandals go, I always pack a minimalistic leather pair, Birkenstocks to wear to the poor or beach, and a pair for evening activities.
6. Sunglasses
A fresh pair of sunglasses is always a good idea. I have my eye on a pair from the new Reformation collaboration and splurge-worthy Miu Miu and Celine pairs.
7. Easy Dresses
Dresses that will take you from day to night are key here. I always pack a black or white one and a couple of pretty printed options.
8. Sneakers
In case your travels will involve walking or air travel, don't forget the sneakers. I don't know about you, but I hate wearing sandals on planes.
9. Tank Tops
Tank tops are perhaps the most important basic to pack for a trip. You'll wear them with shorts, swimsuits, skirts—you get it.
