The 2024 Cool-Girl Starter Kit: Everything You Need to Look Current
New year, new you—kind of. When it comes to your wardrobe, heading into 2024 shouldn’t mean that you’re starting from scratch. Whether you’re a frequent Who What Wear reader or simply passionate about what you put on every day, I know that there are at least a handful of items you’ll never part with in your closet. But the arrival of January 1 does offer a chance to reflect, reassess, and look for places where your lineup could use a little bit of a refresh. Bored of your blazer? I have a solution! Ready to rethink your athleisure? There's something new there too!
Since it’s my job to have an eye on the latest It handbag, fresh jewelry trend, or whatever may be currently percolating on the runways or Instagram, I’m here to offer some fresh additions to your wardrobe to consider getting a head start on now. These cool-girl approved trends aren’t meant to replace what you already have but to complement your current staples and add a trendy touch to your uniform. Think bow details, the color trend that will give cherry red a run for its money, and even the sweater that just might convince you to break (at least temporarily) from quiet luxury. To help you get a sense of how the trend will take off, I’ve rounded up some inspiration along with a bit of shopping. Once the New Year arrives, you’ll be ready to debut the pieces you pick.
Burgundy Bag
Cherry red has been the defining color of 2023, but next year things are steering in a slightly moodier direction. Burgundy is a subtle color pop you'll see dominating the handbag space.
This shoulder bag is perfect for everyday.
Fair Isle Sweater
Winter's subtle knits won't go anywhere, but don't be afraid to embrace a seasonal look with a Fair Isle sweater, either in neutral tones or as a pop of color.
A comfy cardigan is a middle layer to style under a trench or wool coat.
Sport Shorts
Sporty details aren't going anywhere, but instead of your usual fitted yoga sets, try mixing casual staples in with your everyday. A sporty pair of shorts are a must.
These casual-cool shorts are an It item for the year ahead.
Your usual running shorts can become an anchor for weekend outfits. Try styling with a tee and blazer.
Cuffed Up
You've ignored your wrists for too long. A bold bangle is just the way to step up your jewelry game in the new year.
The molten look of this slip-on bangle adds a soft touch to tailored looks.
Lady Jacket
Have you worn your blazer a million different ways? Try swapping in a lady jacket instead. Cropped, with bold buttons and small pockets, it's a throw-on piece that has major impact in making your look feel luxe.
About a Bow
In your hair or on a sweater, everything's coming up bows for spring. Look for subtle details to add a flirty touch to your style, or go for a bold bow as a statement.
Flashy Flats
Comfortable flats will remain a must-wear shoe for 2024, but there's a new twist. Look for shiny, shimmery details like a silver patent leather or rhinestone embellishment.
For a subtle sparkle, try flats that have been studded with sparkly rhinestones.
An elastic strap will stop these silver flats from slipping off of your feet.
