An Appreciation Post for the Incredibly Stylish Cast of the HBO Series Betty

The way I recommend HBO’s limited series Betty to friends is simple: Come for the incredible cast of female skateboarders, stay for the fashion. It’s true. A comedy about a collective of female skateboarders in New York City is giving me all kinds of summer style inspiration right now. Think prints on prints on prints in vibrant colors, kitschy button-downs paired with Dickies, and oversize tie-dye tees with baseball caps styled backward. It’s not surprising that the fashion on Betty, the work of costume designer Camille Garmendia, is as much a central character as the talented women leading the show; fashion has played an integral role in skate culture since the very beginning.

But it’s not just the fashion on Betty that is so good. Peep any of the cast members’ real-life Instagrams, and you’ll find a treasure trove of comfortable yet effortlessly cool looks to add to your repertoire—no skateboard required. Ahead of the season finale, we caught up with some of the show’s leads—Dede Lovelace, Ajani Russell, Moonbear, and Rachelle Vinberg—to talk about their style influences and holding their own in a male-dominated sport, all while they showed off some of their skills.
