7 Spring Trouser Trends Our Editors Can't Stop Thinking About

Is it just me, or do trousers seem to be dominating the trends more than ever before? In 2022, phrases like 'wide leg' and 'puddle pants' hovered constantly at the tip of our tongues, and this year, our vocabulary has grown to include even more specific trouser styles. Cargos, joggers and low-slung waistlines have all shimmied their way into the spotlight, occupying a record-breaking portion of our SS23 trend guide. While pulling it together, we found out that trouser searches on Lyst leapt up 55% post-Fashion Month, according to Morgane Le Caer, fashion expert and content editor at Lyst. It's not just me, then; trousers are evidently in their element this year.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the plethora of pants competing for your attention, don't fret—I've consulted with the Who What Wear team to identify exactly which trousers are worthy of your wish list this season. Drawing inspiration from our favourite influencers, plus keeping in mind the styles that reigned during this month's LFW, we've whittled it down to just seven trouser trends for you to consider for spring. Whether you're a minimalist at heart or a proud maximalist, you'll find a pair for you in the list below.

1. Wide-Leg Trousers

Style Notes: We collectively fell in love with wide-leg trousers in 2023, and this season, they're wider than ever. The styling options are boundless for this versatile shape.

2. Leather Trousers

Style Notes: Leather in all its forms is a key trend for 2023. A pair of faux or real leather trousers will add a distinct edge to your outfit, especially if you double up with a matching blazer.

3. Cargo Trousers

Style Notes: Hands up if you have a love/hate relationship with cargos. Same, but the stream of influencers trialling this trend (and making it look undeniably chic) have convinced me to give it a go.

4. Low-Rise Trousers

Style Notes: In another nod to the noughties, low-waist trousers are back with a bang. Fitted T-shirts seem to be the most popular styling choice, but we've also seen this silhouette bravely teamed with ultra-crop tops.

Style Notes: For your next night out, you won't find a more striking option than metallic trousers. Ease yourself into this statement trend by keeping the rest of the look simple—think neutral shades and streamlined silhouettes.

Style Notes: We're particularly excited about this one because it puts comfort first. Joggers have been given the dressy treatment this season, featuring subtle tailoring and crafted from luxury materials.

Style Notes: Good news if you're already a slim-leg devotee: this tried-and-tested style has been given a new lease of life for 2023. Not only is the cut super flattering, but it's also incredibly easy to build outfits around.

Freelance Fashion Editor

Bébhinn Campbell is an Edinburgh-based fashion and lifestyle writer. After receiving an Audrey Hepburn box set for her 10th birthday and subsequently swooning over the actor’s wardrobe, Bébhinn felt pretty confident she wanted a career that involved clothes. She started her first blog at age 14—the title was a pun, but we’ll leave it at that—and went on to intern at print and digital publications in Berlin and London, including Dazed & Confused and Indie magazine

A job at a fashion startup took Bébhinn from Ireland to Scotland in 2019, where she now works as a freelance journalist and copywriter covering everything from travel and interiors to styling advice. As a contributor for Who What Wear, Bébhinn always keeps her eyes peeled for emerging trends and looks worth writing about. She prides herself on her ability to cut through the noise and identify solid investment buys, exciting new brands and updated takes on classic designs.

While she still loves Audrey Hepburn films, these days, Bébhinn’s sartorial taste sits closer to Annie Hall’s and Alexa Chung’s. In her spare time, she’s likely cooing over cute dogs on rescue websites, playing folk songs on her guitar and browsing bookshops for new additions to her already-overpacked shelves.
