These 11 Mascaras Actually Make Short Lashes Look Longer
When it comes to making short lashes look longer, we've found the very best lengthening mascaras that make a real difference.

If I asked you what constitutes the best mascara, I can practically guarantee we won’t agree. While some of us want a mascara that delivers maximum volume, others prefer a finish that leans more towards the au naturel. For those with straight lashes, it’s a mascara that offers the perfect doll-eyed curl. And that’s before we even begin to talk about different mascara shades, from the richest of black mascaras to soft brown mascaras and even burgundy mascara. I’m sure you’re starting to see what I’m getting at—finding your perfect mascara is no mean feat. What we all seem to agree on, however, is that whatever mascara camp we find ourselves in, there’s one thing it undoubtedly must deliver on, and that’s length.
Even as someone who doesn’t have naturally short lashes, I constantly find myself on a quest to make them appear even longer. Whether through the religious application of lash serums, professional treatments, like lash lifts and lash extensions, or the best lengthening mascaras, I want my lashes to flutter at lengths nobody has ever seen before. An extreme response? Yes, but there’s something about the way long lashes completely transform your face that I can’t get enough of.
So, over the years, I’ve tested many lengthening mascaras to see which ones deliver and which ones quite literally come up short. After years of trial and error, I’ve narrowed it down to a few standout formulas that I return to again and again. Mascaras that still deliver on volume and lift but don’t compromise on length in the process.
But my quest for ultra-long lashes doesn’t stop there. I thought, why not get some expert advice to find out what really makes the best lengthening mascara? Thankfully, celebrity makeup artist Buster Knight, was on hand to help.
Volumising vs. Lengthening Mascaras
“Lengthening mascaras typically have a thinner texture and come with a comb-like brush that lifts and holds the lashes in place, making them appear longer,” says Knight. “Volumising mascaras add density, giving the lashes a thicker, fuller look.”
What Makes a Good Lengthening Mascara?
“For me, a great mascara doesn’t crumble, but it also shouldn't stay wet,” Knight tells me. “I like a smaller brush that combs the lashes from the root and really holds a curl. I personally love a tubing mascara because it tends to do a bit of both [volumising and lengthening]—it forms a fibre-like tube around each lash to lengthen while also encapsulating it for a fuller effect. My current favourite is Beauty Pie’s Wrap Star Tubing Mascara, £19.”
How to Apply Mascara to Make Lashes Look Longer
“When applying mascara, I always start by curling the lashes [as] it instantly opens the eye and makes them appear longer,” says Knight. “My favourite lash curlers are from Shu Uemera and Sweed.”
"Then, I like to comb the brush from root to tip, on the top and the bottom of the lash,” she adds. As someone who has spent years only applying mascara to the bottom, this tip was a game-changer for me when it came to making my lashes appear longer.
“I also tend not to wiggle the brush, as it can make the lashes too clumpy and thick—I prefer a more fluttery, natural lash,” Knight continues. “If you like a heavier lash look or want more precise product application, however, the MyKitCo lash brush is a must-try.” Apply your mascara to a palette and then use the brush to apply it to your lashes, building up the product without overloading them.
So, armed with Knight’s advice, I returned to my trusty stash of lengthening mascaras to see if they could work even harder. These 11 deliver on game-changing length, are clump-free and deliver some added lift, too.
The Best Lengthening Mascaras
- Best overall lengthening mascara: Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara (£32)
- Best tubing lengthening mascara: It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara (£25)
- Best volumising lengthening mascara: Charlotte Tilbury Exagger-eyes Volume Mascara (£28)
- Best affordable lengthening mascara: Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara (£12.99)
- Best natural-looking lengthening mascara: Nudestix Lash Lengthening Mascara (£21.50)
1. Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara
I always have an Hourglass Unlocked mascara in my collection, that’s how much I love it. Designed to give the appearance of lash extensions with the ease of a mascara, it works to lengthen and lift the lashes without weighing them down. It does this through a combination of a slightly curved silicone brush, my personal favourite style for lengthening, which distributes the product evenly. Then, the pigmented formula wraps the lash, delivering a pitch black look without any flaking or build-up.
Pros
- Tubing formula
- Glossy finish
- Buildable
Cons
- Wet formula can transfer easily during application
2. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara
If you’re looking for an affordable mascara, Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara should be your first port of call. A beauty-editor favourite, it contains lengthening fibres which, although practically undetectable to the eye, work to lengthen the lashes with each sweep of the brush. I like to build up a few coats for maximum impact, yet no matter how many times I pass it over my lashes, they never look clumpy, simply lifted and longer.
Pros
- Affordable
- Contains lengthening fibres
Cons
- Does require a few swipes to build up coverage
3. Makeup by Mario Master Mascara
I’m sure it comes as no surprise to hear that celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic has, of course, mastered the lengthening mascara. Created to be the only mascara he’d need in his kit, it offers lift, volume and curl all rolled into one. Even more, it’s also infused with pro-vitamin B5, to nourish lashes, while castor oil conditions for no unwanted crunch. If you’re looking for a foolproof formula, this is a great option.
Pros
- Nourishing formula
4. It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara
I have recommended this mascara to so many people and every one of them has ran out and bought it for themselves, so of course I have to include it in this edit. A triple-threat tubing mascara, it makes lashes look longer and fuller in just one sweep while also infusing them with a trio of skincare ingredients. Alongside the lengthening polymers, you’ll also find biotin for definition, collagen to plump and peptides to keep lashes soft and supple. This is a lengthening mascara and then some.
Pros
- Tubing formula
- Infused with skincare ingredients
Cons
- It's a stretch to think of anything negative, but it might be too volumising for some
5. Charlotte Tilbury Exagger-eyes Volume Mascara
Okay, I know Charlotte Tilbury’s Exagger-eyes Mascara is technically a volumising formula, but it provides too much length for it not to be included on this list. Infused with plumping polymers, the tubing formula wraps each lash in a glossy black pigment providing thickness, lift and most importantly of all, length. Since I got my hands on this mascara, I’ve reached for it almost every day and, as someone who's usually fickle with her beauty product allegiances, you know that’s the highest of commendations.
Pros
- Tubing formula
Cons
- Volume effect may not suit all tastes
6. Nudestix Lash Lengthening Mascara
For natural-looking length, Nudestix Lash Lengthening Mascara is one of my favourites. It features a slightly coned bristle brush that grabs the lashes easily and coats them from root to tip. In terms of formula, I would say this is one of the driest on this list, so you do need to work quickly before it sets. What this means, however, is that there’s minimal chance of transfer and less room for mishaps—a big plus if, like me, you’re prone to getting mascara on your upper lids without even meaning to.
What I love most about this mascara, however, is that it’s also infused with a peptide complex. Remember those lash serums I mentioned earlier? Well, with this mascara you can skip them as the peptides work to strengthen and lengthen your natural lashes as it colours, which means longer and stronger lashes on mascara-free days too.
Pros
- Contains nourishing peptides
Cons
- Naturual finish may not suit all tastes
7. Max Factor False Lash Effect Supreme Recharge Mascara
Another great affordable option, I’ve actually written a whole article on my love for Max Factor’s Supreme Recharge Mascara, so if you’re considering buying it and looking for a more in-depth review, I’d definitely check it out.
In a nutshell, however, Supreme Recharge is a keratin-infused formula that offers both length and volume while also strengthening the lashes. That means longer lashes over time, as well as when the mascara is applied. The trick with this one is not to overload it; two coats are all you need for a false lash-inspired look.
Pros
- Keratin-infused formula
- Refillable packaging
- Affordable
Cons
- Can become flaky is over-applied
8. Benefit They’re Real Mascara
While Benefit mascaras exist in various iterations, for me, the original They're Real is the best, especially when it comes to length. The clever brush features not only different length bristles on the body but also at the tip, to easily allow you to catch even the smallest of lashes, while the long-wear formula lengthens and lifts without going dry or flaky. There’s a reason Benefit is the number 1 prestige mascara brand in the UK and trust me, this mascara has a lot to do with it.
Pros
- Unique brush shape
Cons
- Can be difficult to remove
9. Chantecaille Longest Lash Faux Clis Mascara
I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to love this mascara as much as I do. Housed in an unassuming grey tube, Chantecaille’s Longest Lash Mascara looks much like any other mascara featuring a bristle wand that cones slightly at the top, packing not necessarily in keeping with its £66 price tag.
On use, however, it reveals its mastery. The brush is designed with two different sizes of bristles, which don’t just coat the lashes but also give them a fanned-out effect. My only word of warning, while I love this mascara, anyone with very straight lashes may want to skip it as the fanned effect does create a slightly angled look rather than a soft, curled finish.
Pros
- Gives a unique fanned out finish
Cons
- Expensive
- May not be suitable for straight lashes
10. Sculpted by Aimee LashLift Mascara
If you haven’t heard of Sculpted by Aimee before, the brand's LashLift mascara is a great place to start. Created by makeup artist Aimee Connolly, the beauty brand creates luxe formulations at affordable prices. The LashLift Mascara features an incredibly lightweight formula that slips easily over the lashes yet feels invisible once on. The look, however, it’s a winner for anyone who wants longer lashes with plenty of definition. My only wish is that the mascara handle was slightly longer to allow a little extra room to manoeuvre the wand, especially as a long-nail girlie.
Pros
- Lightweight formula
Cons
- Short wand handle
11. Beauty Pie Wrap Star Tubing Mascara
Price shown is the members' price.
Lastly, we have Knight’s favourite Beauty Pie mascara. While I can’t vouch for this one myself, if it has Buster’s seal of approval, you know it has to be good. Described as creating “locked and loaded lashes”, it promises both length and curl as well as glossy, high-impact colour. It also features a slightly smaller brush than some of the other mascaras on this list, something Knight commented he looked for in the best lengthening mascaras. On Knight’s recommendation, I know I’ll be ordering this one to try it out for myself ASAP.
Pros
- Tubing formula
- Affordable
Cons
- Higher price for non-beauty pie members
