I Spent Weeks Testing the Best Facial Sculpting Tools—These Are the Ones That Really Worked
I put all the best facial sculpting tools on the market through their paces to see which delivered on lifting, toning and defining.
Facial sculpting skin tools are quickly becoming one of the most talked-about categories in beauty. What started with simple jade rollers has evolved into a new wave of at-home devices designed to lift, tone and define with no clinic appointment required. Joining a growing category of beauty tech, including LED face masks and microcurrent tools, facial sculpting devices promise a more sculpted look with consistent use.
As a beauty editor edging further into the latter half of my thirties, I have to admit that I have found myself paying close attention to this category lately. While I’m not interested in injectables or anything invasive just yet (no judgment—I’m just an absolute wimp when it comes to being in an even slightly medicalised setting), I can’t lie and say that the subtle shifts in my face aren’t starting to bother me. I’m about to turn 37, and with growing older naturally comes skin that feels a little less firm, a touch more looseness around the jawline than I’d like, and a gradual slowing down in collagen production that means my face just looks a whole lot less plump than it used to. And while I’ve never been about chasing perfection (I’m low-maintenance at heart), I would like to preserve what I have, and perhaps tighten it up slightly, in a way that doesn’t feel too intensive.
And that’s exactly where facial sculpting tools come in. “The aim of using a facial sculpting tool is mainly to de-puff the face,” explains Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP, aesthetics doctor and owner of The Aesthetics Doctor. “They help to reduce water retention and support lymphatic drainage in the skin, which gives a temporary sculpting effect.” Providing a more DIY approach to firming and definition, these tools are great if you don’t want the upkeep of regular salon treatments, but the question is, which ones actually deliver?
Best Facial Sculpting Tools
- Best for de-puffing: Shark Beauty DePuffi Contrast Therapy Sculpting Tool (£180)
- Best for customisable treatments: Ziip Halo 2.0 (£380)
- Best for overall skin appearance: Foreo FAQ 402 Dual Microcurrent LED Toning Device (£559)
- Best for a relaxing facial: Medicube Mini Booster Pro Plus (£160)
- Best affordable sculpting tool: Geske Microcurrent Face Lifter (£40)
Choosing a Facial Sculpting Tool
With so many on the market, knowing what to look for in a facial sculpting tool can be overwhelming—especially as there are so many different technologies and techniques in the mix. Typically, though, when it comes to sculpting, it's microcurrent devices that reign supreme.
“Microcurrent devices can give a mild muscle-stimulating effect which may help with short-term toning,” explains Dr Ahmed. And although prices can soar into the high hundreds, he does point out that spending more doesn’t always give better results. “Honestly, I would keep it simple. A lot of the more basic devices, even a manual gua sha that costs a few pounds, are absolutely fine and can do the job.” If it’s more than sculpting that you’re after, then Dr Ahmed suggests looking for devices that also incorporate LED therapy. “This will support overall skin health too, like collagen stimulation and easing inflammation,” he says.

1. Shark Beauty DePuffi Contrast Therapy Sculpting Tool
Pros
- Instant and visible results
- Hot and cold settings
- Easy to use—no app required
Cons
- Results aren’t long-lasting
This nifty device first came into my possession as part of the Shark Facial ProGlow facial device (the brand’s take on a suction facial), and it quickly became obvious that the DePuffi attachment was my favourite part of the whole tool. I tend to reach for it on particularly tired mornings when my face feels puffy and a bit flat, as the treatment can be done in just four minutes if you’re in a rush. You can choose from InstaChill or InstaHeat, depending on whether you want to sculpt or boost glow, and it’s incredibly effective.
After finishing my morning skincare routine, and generously applying serum and moisturiser for slip, I just glide this over my cheekbones and jaw for a few minutes on the cool setting, and it instantly makes my face look fresher and more lifted. It’s very intuitive too (there’s no app required), and while the results aren’t permanent, there’s a definite short-term sculpting effect, especially around my jawline. It also doesn’t really matter that the benefits aren’t particularly long-lasting, as consistent use is so easy when it’s this simple and seamless to use.
2. Ziip Halo
Pros
- Customisable treatments through the app
- Targets multiple concerns
- Noticeably lifts over time
Cons
- You do need the app to get the most from it
Ziip was the facial sculpting tool that I had the highest hopes for, as I have heard so much positive praise for this device since it launched a few years back, with celebrities like Margot Robbie and Jennifer Aniston reportedly swearing by it. This year, the original device was succeeded by the Ziip Halo 2.0—an updated microcurrent device with app-led treatments for a whole range of skin concerns.
It definitely feels like an advanced tool, and the app is a big part of the experience, guiding you through treatments for lifting, sculpting and even support for managing breakouts. It took me a couple of tries to get used to it, but with consistent use (three to five times a week), I have noticed a definite improvement in cheekbone definition and the overall texture and clarity in my skin tone. It’s an investment, but one that pays off.
3. Foreo FAQ 402 Dual Microcurrent LED Toning Device
Pros
- Combines LED and microcurrent
- Improves tone and skin clarity
- Can use with our without app
Cons
- It’s expensive
The price tag of this device means that it’s clear from the off that you’re delivering in a really premium piece of kit here, but the combination of microcurrent technology, LED light, and T-Sonic massage means that you’re getting a real all-round skin treatment with this. You don’t need to use it with an app, which I appreciate (although you can access additional settings via one if you want to), and the interface is pleasingly straightforward. Just switch it on and then adjust the intensity as you go.
It feels slightly warming and a bit tingly as you move it across your skin, and whilst the sculpting results do take a few sessions to build, they are really noticeable around the jawline specifically. Plus, the overall clarity of my skin just feels firmer, smoother and more even in texture, especially around the sides of my face where I have quite a lot of acne scarring. This is definitely less about quick fixes and more about long-term improvement of your skin.
4. Medicube Mini Booster Pro Plus
Pros
- Very beginner-friendly
- Lightweight and portable
- Feels relaxing and soothing
Cons
- Subtle results
This is one of the simplest devices I’ve used, and that’s exactly why I like it. It comes in two parts—the Mini Plus itself and the Roller Head. Plus, there’s also a cleansing brush attachment, which you can buy separately. You select from red, blue or purple light (depending on whether you want help with firming, refining or massaging skin), then slot it into the roller head and get going.
There’s no app, and it’s very much a glide-and-go situation with the face roller attachment feeling amazing on the skin—just like a mini facial. The two-pronged head also doubles as a great tool for massaging the neck as well. I’d say that it’s more about maintaining your skin rather than any dramatic lift, but if you’re new to facial toning tools and want to really pamper yourself, then it’s a great place to start.
5. NuFace Mini+
Pros
- Reliable lifting results
- Easy to use
- Instant and long-term benefits
Cons
- You do need to use it regularly
The classic NuFace Toning Device, loved by Hailey Bieber, is a huge investment at nearly £600 with various attachments to lift, target specific areas and treat skin to LED therapy. However, if it is purely the facial sculpting that you’re after, then the NuFace Mini makes a great option. It’s small, portable and uses advanced microcurrent technology to massage the skin, smooth fine lines and tone and firm. Though consistency is key with this one if you want long-term results, there are immediate results with a slight lift straight after using and less puffiness in the face. But the real payoff comes with regular use.
6. Geske Microcurrent Face Lifter
Pros
- Affordable
- Multi-functional
- Good entry-level results
Cons
- Less powerful than premium devices
When I say that this is a basic sculpting device, I mean it in a good way. If you feel intimidated by skincare tools and technology, then the simplicity of this one will definitely appeal. It’s compact, easy to use, and the sessions last for around five minutes at a time. You can use the Geske app to select the treatment that you want for your skin type, then you switch it on and use it in conjunction with the brand’s microcurrent gel. It’s not the most transformative option, but it does deliver on slightly tightening and lifting the skin, so it’s a great place to start if you’re curious about sculpting tools without wanting to make a huge investment quite yet.
7. FaceGym Pro EMS Device
Pros
- Strong, noticeable results
- Mimics professional treatments
- Great for definition
Cons
- Sensation can feel intense
I am a huge fan of FaceGym for their in-salon treatments. They are one of the few facials I’ve experienced where I step outside afterwards and feel like my face looks dramatically different in terms of its shape. This device feels as close to an in-clinic treatment as you can get, so it might be one to invest in if you’re also a fan of their facials. It uses EMS (electrical muscle stimulation), and you can really feel it working. It’s much more intense than traditional microcurrent, and you’ll notice parts of your face twitching involuntarily as you move it across your skin. It can take a couple of uses to get comfortable with the sensation, but the payoff is worth it. For defined cheekbones, a tighter jawline and visible sculpting, it delivers.
How to Use a Facial Sculpting Tool
The most important thing to know before investing in a facial sculpting tool is that these devices do require regular use if you want to see results. “Facial sculpting tools give a temporary effect, so if you like a slightly more defined look, you need to use them consistently, often daily, says Dr Ahmed. “These tools are more about maintenance and short-term improvement rather than structural change, so if someone wants a more noticeable or long-lasting change to their facial shape, then that’s where treatments like filler come in.”
How we Tested Facial Sculpting Tools
Shopping for beauty tech is a big investment, with most of the best facial sculpting tools coming in at over £100, and soaring up to over £500 in some cases. So if you're considering buying one, you probably want to know if it's worth it. I personally tested a whole range of facial sculpting tools, ranking them on how easy they were to use, whether they delivered on instant results, and what the improvements were to my skin over time.
