Derm-Approved and Ultra-Hydratingy: 8 Face Washes for Dry Skin Under $30
Softer skin for a fraction of the cost.
As a beauty editor with combination skin I get to live the best of both worlds when it comes to my skincare. In the summer, I take on the routine of someone who has oily skin. But as fall and winter come through, I opt for heavier formulas that are all about hydrating my skin and keeping it as soft as possible. Don't get me wrong, I still have my go-to formulas specifically for combination skin, but living it in New York means that we get to experience the full scope of all four seasons including everything from blizzards to heat waves, so I need a skincare routine that has variety.
With autumn on the horizon, I'm already looking into a lot of those dry skin-friendly products, but face washes are definitely highest on the list. The wrong face wash can leave my skin feeling super dry and tight after cleansing (if you have dry skin, you know the feeling). So to help me narrow down which formulas actually work, I decided to chat with a few leading dermatologists to find out which brands offer options that will leave skin feeling clean without stripping it.
Curious for their thoughts? Read on to see the eight best face washes for keeping dry skin soft and moisturized. (Spoiler: they're all $30 or less.)

The Best Face Washes for Dry Skin in 2026
Best Overall: CeraVe Hydrating Face Wash With Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin
Our best overall pick is none other than the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. It's ideal for people who shift from normal to dry skin, making it a great option for year-round use. "This is a great everyday option because it combines ceramides and hyaluronic acid in a gentle formula," says board-certified dermatologist Kristina Collins, MD. "It cleanses without leaving behind that tight, stripped feeling that dry skin often experiences."
Pros: Gentle, hydrating, barrier-supporting formula
Cons: Non-foaming texture may not suit everyone
Key Ingredients: Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin
Size: 12 oz
Customer Review: "My all time favorite gentle cleanser! I have very sensitive and dry skin and this face wash doesn’t irritate my skin or leave it feeling stripped. It’s super gentle, but my face still feels clean after. One bottle of this lasts me forever and the price point is great."
Best for Sensitive Skin: Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin requires extra caution when it comes to ingredients and fragrance, which is why Vanicream fits the bill perfectly. "This is a simple, soap-free option that is particularly useful for dry or reactive skin," says Collins. "It contains glycerin. Plus, it's free of harsh cleansing agents and fragrance and removes everyday buildup without unnecessarily stripping the skin."
Pros: Gentle, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free formula, soap-free
Cons: May feel less hydrating for very dry skin
Key Ingredients: Glycerin, squalane
Size: 8 oz
Customer Review: "This is a great, basic cleanser that is fail-proof. Great for sensitive skin like mine. Foams well, no fragrance, and great for on a budget."
Best Fragrance-Free: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser
Similar to the Vanicream option above is this fragrance-free cleanser from La Roche-Posay. Since some people are strictly sensitive to fragrance, using formulas without any reduces the risk of skin reactions. "I like this for dry and sensitive skin because it contains glycerin, ceramide-3, and niacinamide to cleanse while supporting the moisture barrier," says Collins. "The creamy, fragrance-free formula is especially helpful for people who find traditional foaming cleansers too drying."
Pros: Gentle, hydrating, fragrance-free formula
Cons: May not remove heavy makeup
Key Ingredients: Ceramides, glycerin, niacinamide
Size: 13.52 oz
Customer Review: "This is one of my favorite gentle cleansers. The formula is very soft and perfect for sensitive or dry skin. It cleans the skin without stripping or leaving it tight. My skin feels comfortable and hydrated after using it. Great every-day cleanser and dermatologist recommended"
Best Soothing: Aveeno Calm + Restore Nourishing Oat Facial Cleanser
Irritated skin needs soothing ingredients like the ones found in this Aveeno Calm + Restore Nourishing Oat Face Cleanser. "This milky cleanser is a nice choice for dry skin that is also sensitive or easily irritated," says Collins. "It contains nourishing oat and feverfew to cleanse while preserving the skin’s moisture barrier."
Pros: Gentle, soothing, barrier-supporting formula
Cons: May not remove heavy makeup
Key Ingredients: Oat extract, feverfew extract, glycerin
Size: 7.8 oz
Customer Review: "This cleanser is so soothing! No stripping, no tightness, just clean skin that feels calm right after washing. The oat formula is gentle but still removes makeup and daily grime well. My redness has even calmed down. Perfect for sensitive skin days!"
Best Foaming: Cetaphil Gentle Foaming Cleanser Face Wash for Sensitive Skin
If you have sensitive skin and prefer foaming formulas, you'll appreciate this affordable option from Cetaphil. "[This] is the perennial dermatologist favorite for its commitment to gentle skin care," says board-certified dermatologist Alicia Zalka, MD. "This cleanser does not contain sulfates or detergents but does contain glycerin, which is very hydrating."
Pros: Gentle, foaming, fragrance-free formula
Cons: Pump can get stuck
Key Ingredients: Glycerin, panthenol, niacinamide
Size: 8 oz
Customer Review: "It is a great everyday cleanser specially if you have sensitive or easily irritated skin. It produce light soft foam that effectively removes dirt, oil, or light makeup without stripping your skin or leaving it feeling tight."
Best Splurge: Skinfix Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser With Hyaluronic Acid
If you're willing to splurge a little without going into luxury price points, try a foaming oil cleanser like this one from Skinfix. "This is a nice middle ground for patients who want a richer, more nourishing cleanser but still prefer something that foams," says board-certified dermatologist Nicole Lee, MD. "I especially like it for when dryness and barrier dysfunction are driving sensitivity."
Pros: Hydrating, barrier-supporting, non-stripping formula
Cons: May not suit very oily skin
Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, squalane, ceramides
Size: 5 oz
Customer Review: "As a dry and sensitive skin girly, I approve this cleanser! My cheeks get so red and irritated but this didn’t irritate me at all. My skin felt clean and soft! Absolutely will be repurchasing when I run out."
Best Gel: Asterwood Gel Cleanser for Face
If cream or foam-based cleansers aren't your thing, there are always gel options like this one from Asterwood. "This is a fabulous option for anyone seeking a gentle cleanser with barrier-supportive ingredients," says board-certified dermatologist Jessica Farahi, MD. "It contains three ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe, and sunflower seed oil, which help support hydration while gentle surfactants remove oil and impurities."
Pros: Hydrating, barrier-supporting formula, fragrance-free
Cons: May not remove heavy makeup
Key Ingredients: Ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera
Size: 5.29 oz
Customer Review: "The Asterwood products are amazing! After using an expensive department store brand for 30 years, I found something better for a reasonable price. I can’t stop touching my face. Thank you!"
Best for Redness: Kiehl's Ultra Facial Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser
If you struggle with redness and you've never tried Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Barrier Hydrating Cleanser, this is your sign. "This is great for anyone whose skin is in need of barrier repair, meaning skin looks red and feels raw or sensitive to the touch," says board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Journelle Skin Sapna Pale. "I like pairing this cleanser with richer barrier balms for an ultra restorative cleansing and moisturizer duo."

How often should people with dry skin wash their face?
When you think of a traditional "by the book" skincare routine, you may assume that you have to wash you face day and night. For dry skin though, Lee suggests only once in the evening to remove makeup, sunscreen, oil, and buildup. Then in the morning, stick to just rinsing your face with warm or room temperature water.
Palep adds that washing your face can look like a single cleanser or a double cleanse using one oil-based and one water-based cleanser in that order. "Limiting a full wash to once a day at night ensures you get the day’s “gunk” off your face, and eliminates stripping off the skin’s natural oils," she says.
