I Find Foundation Too Heavy—9 Natural-Looking Tinted Moisturisers I Use Instead
If it's lightweight, radiant coverage you're after, these are the tinted moisturisers to know.
As we head into the warmer months, it's only natural for foundation to fall off your beauty radar. As someone who tends to opt for tinted moisturiser over foundation, I’m here to tell you that the latest formulas really deliver on all fronts. Super hydrating and packed with skin-nourishing ingredients, they’re akin to cleverly formulated foundations but feel lighter and airier, and deliver more coverage than a skin tint.
Not sure whether to try one? I spoke to NARS national senior ertist, Becky Moore and Jess Kohn, education manager for Laura Mercier, who reveal why tinted moisturisers deserve a spot in your makeup bag. Plus, I’ve tried and tested over 20 formulas to reveal nine of the best tinted moisturisers for a natural, skin-like finish, only better. (By the way, a tinted moisturiser is also a great alternative to foundation for mature skin.)
What's the Difference Between Foundation and Tinted Moisturiser?
The main difference between a foundation and a tinted moisturiser is often down to the overall coverage and finish of the formula on the skin.
"Foundations vary in coverage (from full-coverage to medium-coverage) and typically focus on camouflaging imperfections with pigments, while tinted moisturisers offer lighter coverage and even out skintone via formulas that are lightweight and hydrating. They also tend to contain skin-loving ingredients that help to strengthen the skin barrier," reveals Kohn.
Are Tinted Moisturisers Suitable for All Skin Types?
Yes, the good news is that tinted moisturisers are suitable for a wide range of skin types. Kohn says choosing the correct formula for your skin and any skin concerns you may be experiencing is key. "For dry skin, opt for a dewy or hydrating formula containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin. For oily skin, mattifying formulas will help control unwanted shine, so look for formulas containing oil-absorbing ingredients such as clay to help mattify and soothe the skin."
How I Tested the Best Tinted Moisturisers
To find the best tinted moisturisers, I tested each formula over several weeks, focusing on how they perform in everyday life, rather than just first impressions. I looked at lightweight, breathable formulas that even out skin tone without masking, as well as all-day comfort. I prioritised formulas that hydrate without feeling greasy, blend easily and wear well without settling into fine lines. Extra credit was awarded to those with added skincare benefits, such as SPF or hyaluronic acid. Shade range and overall ease of use were also key in determining the final picks.

1. Armani Skin Tint
Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, sea lily.
Number of shades: 20
Pros
- Silky formula
- Dewy finish
- Contains niacinamide
- Improve skin over time
Cons
- Truly no cons, but if I had to pick holes, it's a slightly pricier option
I'm already a big fan of Armani makeup, so I wasn't surprised that this lived up to my expectations. It blends effortlessly, has a lovely, lightweight texture and the finish is mega dewy, giving skin that coveted “your skin, but better” glow without ever feeling heavy or overdone. I barely had to bother with concealer afterwards, and also rated how lasted the day without going patchy.
2. Lumene CC Colour Correcting Cream
Key ingredients: Nordic lingonberry, arctic spring water
Number of shades: 20
Pros
- Great for dry skin
- Has SPF20
- Packed with antioxidants
- Very natural finish
Cons
- Stock is often limited
This has quickly become a go-to for several reasons. First, the coverage feels almost magical—it looks like you’re wearing nothing, yet it blurs imperfections beautifully. It’s also a dream for dry skin, delivering a serious hit of hydration thanks to arctic spring water, prized for its low mineral content and ability to help lock in moisture. I’ve even worn it without moisturiser and still found my skin looked fresh throughout the day. Its hero ingredient, Nordic lingonberry, is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, helping to visibly smooth and revive the complexion.
3. Vieve Skin Nova Complexion Balm
Key ingredients: Polyglutamic acid, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, amino acids
Number of shades: 20
Pros
- Great for oily skin
- Minimises look of pores
- Extensive shade range
Cons
- A thicker consistency, but it really packs a punch
I love how skincare-forward this stuff feels. With ingredients like polyglutamic acid, a water-soluble humectant that delivers intense hydration without clogging pores or leaving any greasy residue, you needn't worry about your complexion looking too shiny by midday. I would say the coverage leans towards the heavier side, but happily, it never feels mask-like. I'm a big fan of the scent of it, too.
4. Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint
Key ingredients: Diamond powder, glycerin
Number of shades: 12
Pros
- A little goes a long way
- Brightening
- Barely-there coverage
Cons
- Not suitable for those looking to conceal
- Limited shade range
I always come back to Glossier Skin Tint when I want the bare minimum coverage, but in the best way. It’s incredibly sheer, just enough to gently even out my complexion while still letting my skin show through, and it's surprisingly brightening, which is thanks to diamond powder. It's a great shout for those who don't want their skin to look “done".
5. Eborian CC Red Correct
Key ingredients: Centella asiatica,
Number of shades: "Universal"
Pros
- Good choice for those with rosacea
- Good for sensitive skin
- Adapts to skin tone
- Skin-soothing ingredients
Cons
- Although dubbed universal, dark skin tones will need to beware
I know plenty of dermatologists who rate this for dealing with rosacea. It starts out green, but you blend it in, it adapts to your skin tone, instantly neutralising redness without looking heavy or obvious. Skin just looks calmer, more even and far less reactive. And because it's a Korean brand, you know that it's also going to be packed with ingredients that fortify your skin barrier. The hero one being centella asiatica, which helps take down that flushed look.
6. Clarins Skin Illusion Tinted Moisturiser
Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, kiwi extract, strawberry tree, chicory
Number of shades: 11
Pros
- Added SPF
- Doesn't crease in fine lines
- Hydrating
- Skin brightening
- Good shade range
Cons
- Quite a wet formula
- Shade range is small
If you prefer your tinted moisturiser to be more skincare than makeup, then get acquainted with this little gem from Clarins. It claims to boost the skin’s radiance by 95% and hydrate for 24 hours—and after testing it solidly for two weeks, I’m inclined to agree. It’s plumping too, so if you’re looking to dial down fine lines over time, it’s definitely worth seeking out.
7. Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser
Key ingredients: French Polynesian kopara, vitamin C
Number of shades: 20
Pros
- Contains vitamin C
- High SPF protection
- Glowy finish
- Buildable
Cons
- Another pricer option
If you're after a formula that really amps up your glow, this one from Nars hides a multitude of sins. Whether you’re hungover, running on very little sleep or burning the candle at both ends, you’d never know it with this skin-reviving moisturiser. It’s very buildable, so you can cover imperfections and ingredients like vitamin C and SPF 30 mean you can rely on it to protect your skin throughout the day.
8. Laura Mercier Tinted Blur Balm
Key ingredients: Peptides, squalane
Number of shades: 10
Pros
- Great for oily skin
- Matte finish
- Even coverage
Cons
- Needs blending quickly before it dries
Okay, so at first glance, this isn’t your typical tinted moisturiser—but hear me out. I wasn’t prepared for just how moisturising this balm would be. It works like a tinted moisturiser but blends seamlessly into the skin, applying evenly with every brush stroke. The coverage is perfection, depositing just the right amount for a natural, matte finish. I was seriously impressed.
9. Lisa Eldridge Seamless Skin Enhancing Tint
Key ingredients: 20
Number of shades: Prickly pear oil, sunflower seed oil, glycerin
Pros
- Good for dry and dehydrated skin
- Packed with skin-loving ingredients
- Good for evening wear
Cons
- Slightly runny so you have to blend quickly
Makeup legend Lisa Eldridge has really nailed this formula as it feels and looks like second skin, while also giving me long-lasting coverage and imparting that sought-after post-holiday glow. It’s packed with hydrating squalene and glycerin, basically the same moisture-locking stuff you find in face creams, so dryness isn’t an issue. There are skin-loving oils too, and even though I worried they might make my skin greasy, by the end of the day my skin still looked dewy, with zero excess shine.
How To Apply a Tinted Moisturiser
This really depends on your desired finish and your tool of choice. Kohn reveals that using a soft foundation brush with dense bristles melts the product into the skin and achieves a streak-free finish.
Whereas Moore says, "Using your fingers, not only warms up the product before you apply it, but the warmth from your fingers will allow the product to saturate the skin beautifully, creating a base that is even and natural looking. Once applied, follow with a translucent loose setting powder to ensure longevity and absorb any unwanted oil throughout the day to control shine," explains Kohn.
"Despite their abilities to offer a more natural, sheerer finish in comparison to foundation formulas, tinted moisturisers create the perfect flawless base for a whole makeup look, and can be followed with contour, bronzer, blush and highlight to further enhance the skin," she adds.
Are Tinted Moisturisers Good for Older Skin?
"Tinted moisturisers are good for mature skin as they provide hydration which is often lacking due to the naturally occurring decline in collagen and oil production," reveals Kohn. "And because they're lightweight and sheer, tinted moisturisers are less likely to emphasise any unwanted texture or settle into fine lines."
