Since Adding This Product to My Routine, My Hair Has Never Been Stronger or Smoother
The best bond repair masks aim to strengthen hair, repair damage and reduce breakage—these are the ones that actually deliver.
As someone who has never coloured my hair, I skipped out on using bond repair masks for the longest time, considering them to be something that only people with bleached or coloured hair need to concern themselves with. For my own hair, which is naturally textured and prone to breakage (even with the gentlest of brushing), I relied on conditioners, hair oils and detanglers to try and combat some of its natural dryness and fragility. Yet lately, I noticed that whatever I seemed to be doing, my hair seemed to be splitting even more than usual. So I reached out for help like any good millennial, on Instagram, to see what everyone else was using to keep their hair smooth, shiny and strong. The resounding answer was bond repair treatments.
You see, the best bond repair masks aren’t just for damage control but for prevention too. These treatments work deeper than even the best conditioner to target the very structure of the strand itself, helping to reconnect broken bonds and prevent future breakage. Whether it's weakness caused by chemical processing, environmental stress or heat styling from hair tools, these masks get to work strengthening strands, boosting elasticity and bolstering shine. The result is that elusive healthy hair look and feel that doesn’t disappear after your next hair wash, it actually improves the condition of your hair long-term.
What is a Bond Repair Mask?
"Your hair is basically held together by loads of tiny bonds, and every single time you colour it, bleach it, straighten it, curl it, even just rough towel-dry it after a shower, you’re breaking some of those bonds," explains Samantha Cusick, celebrity hair stylist and Olaplex global ambassador. "A bond repair treatment goes in and physically relinks the broken bits back together."
Who Should Use a Bond Repair Mask?
"Every single hair type should be using a bond repair mask. Fine hair, thick hair, curls, coils, waves, poker straight, colour-treated, virgin hair, all of it," explains Cusick. "Curly and coily hair especially benefits because those textures are naturally drier and more fragile at the bends in the curl pattern, so keeping the bonds strong is what lets your curls actually hold their shape and bounce properly, but nobody needs to avoid it."
However, there is one thing to note—a bond repair treatment is not a replacement for a hydrating or moisturising hair mask. "If your hair is feeling dry and straw-like rather than damaged and snappy, you want a hydrating mask as well. They’re doing two different jobs," says Cusick.
How Often Should You Use A Bond Repair Mask?
According to Cusick, this one is simple: weekly. Regardless of your hair type. "I know some people think of it as a once-in-a-while treat, but, honestly, it works best when it’s just a permanent part of your weekly routine," she explains.
Since testing the best bond repair masks, my hair feels more resilient, less brittle, and all-around easier to manage since I’ve started using these. Ahead, I break down how they performed on my breakage-prone hair and which ones are worth adding to your own routine.

How We Tested
Keen to see how my own curls could be transformed, I put the most recommended bond repair masks to the test to see how they performed. Below you can see how my hair looks on a typical day—prone to breakage at the ends and crown of my hair, dry and very frizzy.
I tested them over the course of a few weeks and I rated them on how easy they were to use, how good my hair looked immediately afterwards, and now strengthened my hair felt in the days that followed.

1. TypeBea R.1 Pre-Wash Bond Repair Mask
Pros
- Deeply strengthening
- Great for dry, fragile hair
- Smooths and softens
Cons
- Needs to be left on for at least 20 minutes before washing your hair
Not everyone will love the idea of a pre-wash hair treatment, but as someone who often skips using hair masks because I want to get in and out of the shower ASAP, I actually love that you need to apply it before you get in. Typically, I'll get up, dampen my hair and generously apply this, and then get on with enjoying a cup of tea and my breakfast (it needs to be left on for 20 minutes) before jumping into the shower to shampoo it out.
The texture is rich and slightly buttery, and while I do apply it all over, I really focus on the ends of my hair and the fragile postpartum regrowth that I have around my hairline. After rinsing and washing out, then leaving to air dry as usual, I always find that my hair looks immediately healthier in terms of shine, less frizziness in my crown, and smoother looking ends. However, the best thing about this is that the RDS bond complex actually works to strengthen the inside of your strands of hair, so long-term it feels noticeably stronger and more elasticised over time too. This is a real treatment and not just a quick fix.
2. Olaplex No.3 Plus Complete Repair Treatment
Olaplex's iconic No.3 Bond Perfector is probably one of the most well-known bond repair treatments in the industry, and for good reason—it actually repairs the broken bonds in damaged hair to improve its condition long-term. Despite its rave reviews, however, the fact that it needed 15 minutes on damp hair to work always put me off. This new version, however? It works in just three minutes. Hurrah! The best thing about this is that my hair felt instantly smoother, less knotty, and more manageable before I even stepped out of the shower and got to drying it. (My hairbrush literally glided through my freshly-washed hair, which is no mean feat.) And with a few weeks of consistent use, I noticed that my hair felt so much stronger, especially at the ends where I can usually see the most damage.
Pros
- Patented bond repair technology
- Strengthens hair structure
- Only takes 3 minutes
Cons
- Nothing—this new version is brilliant
3. JVN Revive Rapid Repair Bond Gloss
As someone whose hair looks perpetually dull and dry, even when it feels pretty healthy, I am always seeking out products that can up my shine levels even slightly. Thankfully, this innovative treatment from JVN dialled up the glossiness exponentially. Using something called Pro-Plex+, which is a blend of pro-bond rice protein and algae-derived sugars, to minimise split ends, and hemisqualane to bolster shine and strength, it feels like something between a hair serum and a conditioning mask. After shampooing and conditioning your hair, you apply it through the hair, leave it to do its thing for 60 seconds and then rinse out. My hair feels immediately softer and silkier after using it, but it's the reflective shine that keeps me coming back to it.
Pros
- Works in 60 seconds
- Creates a glassy shine
- Feels lightweight
Cons
- Better for a quick fix than long-term repair
4. K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask
This is one of the most low-effort treatments on the list and undeniably appeals to my inner lazy girl. After washing and towel-drying your hair, you apply a pump or two of this (up to three depending on how thick and damaged your hair is), then leave it to sit for a couple of minutes before you get on with your usual styling routine. It uses patented K18Peptide™ technology to reverse damage at a molecular level, and it really does aim to restore hair health.
I was a bit sceptical about whether I'd like this as, typically, I don't really enjoy the feeling of having product in my hair. However, the texture is so lightweight and creamy and really does sink seamlessly into your hair. Whether that's a testament to how dry and frazzled my hair is, I don't know, but after drying my hair just feels smoother, softer and more nourished rather than coated in product. It is expensive, but a little goes a long way, and if you don't like the faff of traditional hair masks, then it's brilliant.
Pros
- No rinsing required
- Deeply hydrating
- Improves hair's appearance from first use
Cons
- It's very expensive
5. L'Oréal Paris Elvive Bond Repair Pre-Shampoo Treatment
Due to the amount of technology and innovation required to make a decent bond repair mask, typically, the best ones tend to be found in the premium beauty space. This one, however, proves that the high street can deliver on hardworking haircare too, using a 12% bond repair citric acid complex to target weakened bonds and strengthen hair from root to tip. You do need to apply it before shampooing, but this can be done on dry hair and left for just a few minutes, so it isn't too time-consuming. And the lightweight texture means that it doesn't feel greasy either before or after shampooing. A really great option if you want to try bond repair treatments without the splurge.
Pros
- Affordable
- Improves appearance of split ends
- Citric acid strengthens hair
Cons
- Need to leave on for 5 minutes before shampooing
6. Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate 5-Minute Liquid Mask
If you have the kind of hair damage that means your hair is constantly in a state of tangles and knots, then this liquid bond repair treatment will ease out those points of friction to leave hair smooth and polished. The liquid texture is quite different from traditional masks—it’s thinner, which helps it spread quickly, but means it can be difficult to apply evenly. You put it on after shampooing, leave it for five minutes, then rinse out, and the effect will be immediate. Hair is smoother with less tangling, and the blend of 16% citric acid helps to seal the cuticles to protect against split ends and future breakage. Perfect if you love your hair to have that sleek, salon-treated kind of feel.
Pros
- It works quickly
- Improves smoothness
- Eases out knots
Cons
- The texture is quite runny so can be tricky to apply evenly
7. Philip Kingsley Bond Builder Restructuring Treatment
Philip Kingsley is a brand with hair health at their core, so it's no surprise that this intensive treatment really takes an inside-out approach to bond repair. It uses Advanced Body Rebuilding Technology to penetrate the surface of your strands and restore existing and broken bonds, aiming to undo the damage caused by bleaching, heat styling, and even brushing your hair. The texture is thick and creamy, and really coats the hair so it's easy to apply evenly. They do suggest you section hair off to really make sure your whole head of hair is coated, though, which for me feels like a bit of a faff, but after use, hair is left feeling genuinely repaired rather than just softer. For me, that means my hair has that natural elasticity and buoyancy that it often lacks, and it feels less fluffy and flyaway. It's incredibly effective and worth taking the time to use properly.
Pros
- Great for all kinds of hair damage
- Improves elasticity
- Deeply strengthens
Cons
- It's more intensive time-wise to use
8. NAK Structure Complex No3 Bond Enhancer
Anyone who suffers from an irritable scalp will know that, despite how damaged your hair might be, it isn't appealing to overload your hair with heavy or potent treatments for fear of disrupting the skin on your head. This bond repair mask, however, takes sensitivity into account with a blend of peptides and ectoin to protect the skin barrier on your head while watermelon and hazel seed get to work strengthening your hair's bonds from the inside out. It's a really nurturing option which, while not as instantly transformative as some of the other treatments on the list, does work to strengthen and protect over time, from the ends of your hair to the top of your head.
Pros
- Gentle to scalp
- Repairs and softens hair
- Only takes 3 to 5 minutes
Cons
- Results aren't as instantly dramatic as others
