I’ve been a stylist and brand consultant for over 20 years now, and I'm a strong believer in buying less and wearing your pieces more. I've learnt from reworking clients' wardrobes that after editing them down to a smaller capsule, it becomes a lot easier to pull outfits together, because you can actually see what's in there.
After twenty years of dressing in London, I am well acquainted with what a British May feels like. That first proper stretch of warmth, packing away heavier layers in favour of light spring buys. These days, I'm based in Sydney, and we're heading into our own seasonal shift, but I always find myself shopping with a UK wardrobe in mind at this time of year. May is my favourite season to dress for, wherever I happen to be.
This month, my approach is all about soft, tonal layering. Spring-ready fabrics like fluid linens, crushed satin and breezy cotton are doing the heavy lifting this month. Recently, I've been working with a quietly elegant colour palette of ecru, sun-bleached honey, washed indigo and the softest blush pink, with black in as the anchor. A pair of Sézane's New 70's Trousers in honey leather has already become the piece I reach for most; I've been pairing them with an easy ecru cotton blouse and a raffia shoulder bag for something that feels thrown-together but considered. A Reformation knit co-ord in custard and an Arket crushed-satin slip dress are the two pieces I'm relying on for dressier moments.
Below, I've handpicked fourteen pieces this month that feel both directional and genuinely easy to wear. All of the styles can slot straight into your existing rotation and still feel relevant for many years to come.

We’re at that point in the year where the weather shifts vastly from day to day. One minute, we’re battling rain showers and throwing on an extra scarf; the next, the skies clear and the warm sunshine breaks through. Whilst it feels like a supremely British experience, we’re also facing the same unpredictable weather here in Sydney, so I too have been spending my time figuring out how to dress right now.
After a few weeks of this up-and-down weather, I think I’ve figured it out. Right now, I’m leaning into clever layering to see me through the transitional period into spring, calling upon classic wardrobe heroes to do the heavy lifting. Whether facing grey skies or bright sunshine, it’s easy shirts, slip-on skirts, light jackets and of course, relaxed denim that are working hardest in my wardrobe right now. I'm using a fresh colour palette to renew my outfits for the new season; contrasting tones of icy blue and rich burgundy, along with fresh white denim and soft peach, are seamlessly blending with my go-to neutrals.
I’ve handpicked a selection of pieces that have caught my eye this month, all of which are practical and designed to be worn on repeat long after the weather settles into a new sunny rhythm.
