Retro Rewind: The Only Vintage Trends That Matter in 2020

Vintage trends 2020

Every single time I visit my sweet, chic grandmother, she unfailingly reminds me that whatever trend I'm sporting at that moment was so fashionable during (insert whichever decade here) and how the fashion of today is really just a repeat of yesterday. While it's definitely endearing coming from my grandma, it's also a well-known fact: Fashion is cyclical. What was once in will surely be back again in the future. That's just the way the sartorial world works.

Any true fashion person loves a good vintage find, particularly when they happen to align exactly with the trends of the season (those fashion cycles come in handy!). Whether it's by raiding your grandmother's closet (as I am wont to do) or scouring The RealReal (where I just found a $900 Dolce & Gabbana vest for $40—score!), shopping vintage is not only good for your closet but also good for the earth too.

Fortunately, vintage (and vintage-inspired clothing) seems to be the phrases of the year, with both sartorial and sustainable trends moving in the same direction. That's why we've rounded up the top vintage trends of 2020, so you can get to hunting or grab a modern, updated version if you prefer.

1. Printed Silk Scarves

If your Instagram isn't already flooded with fashion people tying printed silk scarves around their hair, neck, and torsos, it soon will be. Draw inspiration from the '70s (the decade in which the silk scarf ruled) and wear a headband like Goldie Hawn, or in a loose hair wrap like Bianca Jagger.

2. Slip Dresses

The slip dresses of the '90s have basically become a wardrobe staple at this point, but let's not forget that we have the decade's minimalist aesthetic to thank for these easy slips. We recommend styling one over a turtleneck and sheer tights for a spring transitional look.

3. Flared Jeans

Yes, you read that right. From skinny jeans to mom jeans, we've moved into the next jeans trend: flares. Think of the bell-bottoms from the '70s minus the peace signs and braids.

4. Vests

A personal favorite, vests (or waistcoats if you want to be fancy) are back and taking over the suiting trend. Layer under a blazer or over a turtleneck for the ultimate vintage look.

5. Corsets

Little Women has got us thinking about many things—not least of which is the corset. Simultaneously alluring and cool, corsets are no longer worn under your dress, but rather over T-shirts or worn alone with a pair of flared jeans.

6. Oversize Collars

From button-downs to sweaters and beyond, oversize collars are coming for your tops. The ultimate styling tip is to pair a big collar under a sweater for a chic layered look.

7. Loafers

Loafers have carried on into 2020 from 2019 (or the '50s, if you want to be exact). A popular styling trick in the '50s? Styling the preppy shoes with bright white socks. Actually, that's a modern favorite, too.

8. Granny Glasses

Granny glasses are becoming decidedly less The Golden Girls and more cool girl with the likes of oversize, square-ish frames in '70s-inspired warm tints. The name "granny glasses" is all you really need to know that this trend is straight vintage.
