I'm Hooked on Toteme's Perfect Trench Coat—Here's Every Way I'd Style it
I think September to November might be my favourite time of year. Re-energised after the long summer months, I'm looking forward to crisper weather, candlelit evenings and wrapping up in cashmere. Of course, as the fashion set will know, these autumn pleasures come second to the joy we feel when able to showcase a little more of our wardrobes. With autumn’s advent comes the layering potential of dreams, and the hero item that facilitates it all is a classic trench coat.
We're constantly on the lookout for the trench that does it best, noting contenders that offer dropped shoulders, a chic collar and roomy pockets, all in that perfect shade of beige. Topping the chart this year (and for a few years in a row now, to be honest) is Toteme's Double-Breasted Cotton-Blend Gabardine Trench Coat (£640), which is finally back in stock after being unavailable for months. Keen for an excuse to take the plunge, I've come up with five ways to style this autumn essential to get the inspiration flowing as trench-coat season approaches.
See how we'll styling our favourite trench of the season below.
1. WITH JEANS AND A TANK
Style Notes: An early-autumn staple outfit, there may be no chicer ensemble than a trench, jeans and a simple tank. This easy-to-replicate outfit is perfect for a casual weekend look, but can also be smartened up for the office.
The perfect trench coat. We're collectively relieved that this is back in stock.
Dragon Diffusion bags remain at the top of my wish list.
… and a minimal bangle gives just the right amount of gleam.
2. WITH A LBD
Style Notes: A good trench will be called upon just as often to complete an evening look, as it will a casual, daytime outfit. To dress it up, style with a strapless dress, mesh heels and big earrings.
First there were mesh flats, now we're seeing mesh heels everywhere. This Reformation pair has caught my eye.
A pair of statement earrings you'll call upon time and again.
3. WITH SPORTY TOUCHES
Style Notes: A roomy trench lends itself to all sorts of styling potential. Style with a cool baseball cap and chunky trainers for a sporty look with a polished edge.
Wear dutifully buttoned for a chic finish, or style it open for a relaxed take.
A baseball cap adds a touch of cool to any outfit.
These black trousers can be dresses down with trainers or elevated with ballet flats.
4. WITH A COSY KNIT
Style Notes: When purchasing your trench, you'll want to make sure that it comfortably fits a chunky jumper underneath, as this pairing will quickly become a pillar of your autumn wardrobe. There are great cosy jumpers available from so many brands, but I love this cashmere knit from COS.
These trousers look great styled with a loose knit or tucked into a white shirt.
5. WITH LIGHT LAYERS
Style Notes: This autumn, I'm taking my cue from the most stylish celebrities and relying on a crisp button-down to see me through back-to-school season. A classic poplin shirt looks great buttoned up and equally as chic undone with a white tee underneath.
