I'm a Shopping Editor—6 Spring Basics I'm Over and 6 I'm Going to Wear All the Time
As a shopping editor, I spend a lot of time analyzing trends—what's coming, what's going, and which pieces are worth buying. While some basics stand the test of time, others shift with the seasons. Technically, basics never go out of style, but certain ones feel more relevant than others this year.
In general, I'm not much of one for fleeting trends. I prefer a wardrobe of elevated essentials—finding unique silhouettes, textures, and details rather than chasing what's new. I'm refining my basics this spring—from the U-neck tank tops that dominated the spring/summer 2025 runways to embracing more fitted bottoms. These are the spring staples I'm into and the ones I'm over.
I'm Into: U-Neck Tank Tops
I'm Over: Oversize T-Shirts
U-neck tank tops were everywhere on the spring/summer 2025 runways—Willy Chavarria, ACNE Studios, Gucci, Stella McCartney, and more. They're just as casual as an oversize T-shirt but feel more put-together, thanks to their fitted silhouette. I want my basics to feel intentional rather than thrown on.
I'm Into: East-West Bags
I'm Over: Tiny Bags
Micro bags like the Jacquemus Chiquitos had their moment, but East-West bags have taken over. Not only do they look sleek, but they actually fit your essentials—phone, keys, wallet, lip products, and then some.
I'm Into: Kitten Heels
I'm Over: Chunky Loafers
Chunky loafers have been a big trend, but I'm all about kitten heels now. As someone who hates the pain of high heels, the slight lift without the discomfort is ideal. They're the perfect balance between polish and ease and instantly elevate any outfit. Plus, there are so many variations—sandals, slingbacks, pointed, peep toes, etc.
I'm Into: Polo Shirts
I'm Over: Sweater-Vests
Last month, I was "shopping" in my boyfriend's closet and discovered a random Eddie Bauer long-sleeve polo shirt. Since then, I've been wearing it on repeat. Sweater-vests were huge that past few years, but I've just always gravitated more toward this preppy style.
I'm Into: Midi Skirts
I'm Over: Micro Miniskirts
Don't get me wrong—a micro miniskirt is a staple in my wardrobe, but I prefer to wear mine with tights when it's colder. I do love skorts as well, but after months of New York's long, cold, sun-deprived winter, the thought of wearing anything micro right now sounds unappealing. Instead, I'm opting for midi skirts. I love how their in-between length feels effortless yet sophisticated.
