From Size 0 to 4X, These 5 Elevated Trends Are Popping Off
Although the fashion industry has made strides towards body diversity, it's no secret that there's still a long way to go. While most of our work as editors involves identifying and discussing trends, it's often that women who fall outside of the thin, sample-size mold aren't apart of these conversations. It's important to note that as we talk about what's trending in the fashion world, we recognize more than the stereotypical sample-sized fashions displayed on the runways. After all, you can't put a size on great style.
Well, we're here to hopefully change that, and prove that no matter your body type, you can still get in on this season's booming trends. We've scanned the goods of our favorite brands and turned to fashion tastemakers to see which styles are appearing in a major way. If you're a lover of all things cozy, you'll be pleased to find many knits cropping up on this list. For the minimalists, there's also something for you too. Just keep scrolling to see our full trend report on the body-inclusive styles popping off right now.
1. Shoulder-Baring Sweaters
Spring feels like a world away, but it's only a matter of time until you'll be reaching for lighter fabrics and jackets. Here, you can flash a little skin but feel cozy at the same time–really the best of both worlds if you ask us. Grab some showstopping earrings and create a lewk to be proud of.
2. Sultry Cardigans
This phrase really does sound like an anomaly but hear us out: the key to making a cardigan feel sexy is to go for tight, body-clinging fits and to style it as a top. We've seen fashion girls pull off this trend in a number of ways, from pairing it with cargo pants to slinky slip skirts, so its versatility is proven. If you're feeling extra nostalgic for the 90s, leave it unbuttoned and wear it over a crop top.
3. Sweetheart Necklines
Thanks to New York fashion favorite, Khaite, we're living in a sweetheart neckline Rennaissance, and I really can't say I'm mad. This flirty detail has popped up in knit dresses, bodysuits, and sweaters alike, specifically in toasty neutral hues.
4. Cut-Out Bodysuits
Stay tuned for The Prettiest Pairs of Underwear on The Internet.
It seems like everything is sliced and diced these days, including the humble bodysuit. They're a step up from your typical utilitarian basic, but not too crazy that you'll struggle to style them. The cut-outs add an unexpected touch that feels modern.
5. All In The Sleeves
We can't seem to escape big sleeves. Poufy, voluminous sleeves are having a major moment right now, and we're seeing brands adopt them in several styles ranging from dresses to button-down blouses. This is a fun piece to spice up your closet if you're wanting to venture out of your comfort zone.
Indya Brown is a fashion editor, stylist, and writer living in Los Angeles. While going to school at Columbia University in New York City, she got her feet wet in the fashion industry interning at Elle magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and New York magazine's The Cut. After graduating in 2016, she joined The Cut as a fashion assistant, eventually working her way up to fashion editor. There, she worked on a multitude of projects, including styling inbook feature stories for New York magazine's print issue, writing and pitching market stories for The Cut, and serving as fashion lead for The Cut's branded content. While New York has been her home for over 10 years, she moved to Los Angeles in the midst of the pandemic in 2020 for a new chapter. Now she is a fashion market editor for Who What Wear, focusing on emerging designers, rising trends on and off the internet, interior design, and BIPOC creatives and brands. Aside from her duties as a fashion market editor, Brown is also a freelance stylist and writer, working on national print and video commercial campaigns for Sephora, The Independent, and Cadillac. Her bylines also include Harper's Bazaar, Vox, and The New York Times. But once the computer goes down and the emails turn off, she's likely eating her way through Koreatown, hunting down vintage furniture, scoping out new outrageous nail designs to try, or taking a hot cycling class.
