Mary-Kate and Ashley Made Flip-Flops Look Chic for a Rare New Shoot

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen are notoriously private when it comes to granting interviews and photo shoots, so we revel in any news we can get from the stylish siblings. They just sat down with WSJ Magazine to talk about their brand The Row’s first expansion into menswear. During the interview, they revealed what their dynamic is like with each other: “It’s been 32 years of learning how to communicate,” Ashley told the magazine, explaining that their relationship is like “a marriage and a partnership. We have had ups and downs.” Mary-Kate also added, “We do everything together. We came out of the womb doing that.”

In addition to the rare interview, the designers posed for an even rarer photo shoot—in signature pared-back Olsen style, naturally. Mary-Kate and Ashley coordinated in loose, long-sleeve black tops, trousers, and the pièce de résistance: matching flip-flops. Leave it to them to make the controversial shoe trend look like a million bucks. Scroll down to see the new shoot and get flip-flop styling ideas from the street style scene.

Associate Director, Fashion News

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
