6 Winter Trends That French Women Have Loved Forever
While we know it’s not ideal to play into clichés, there is just something about the way Parisian women dress that has us constantly looking to them for inspiration. There’s a certain je ne sais quoi that can’t exactly be explained but often results in looks that are chic and put-together yet somehow manage to come across as completely effortless. Yes, it may be a stereotype, but it’s a stereotype for a reason.
As to be expected, this winter we’re looking to our favourite French women to figure out exactly how they tackle the colder months. In an effort to emulate their looks, we’re studying the elements of their outfit formulas to see exactly which pieces they throw together and why.
Thus far, throughout my research (which involves the highly scientific method of scrolling through Instagram), I’ve noticed French women are currently loving cosy cardigans, structured blazers and belted coats. They’re also accenting their outfits with perfectly cut button-front jeans and finishing the looks with vintage-style suede boots.
One hallmark of French women’s wardrobes is that they often choose to invest in timeless pieces and classic shapes. They prefer clothes that not only look good today but will remain relevant for seasons to come. Now that is a styling choice we can get on board with. Scroll through below for the winter items we’ll be investing in, thanks to our favourite fashionable French women.
1. Belted Coats
Style Notes: Outerwear is such an important element of your wardrobe come wintertime. A belted coat can be a great way to accentuate your waist, even if you’re wearing multiple layers.
2. Chunky Knitwear
Style Notes: Chunky sweaters are always on high-rotation over winter. Add a pop of colour to your look with a bright jumper, just like Ellie of Slip Into Style has done.
3. Cardigans
Style Notes: While an oversized cardigan can often look like you’ve borrowed it from your grandmother’s closet, French women seem to have cracked the code on how to style the item. For the best results, pair alongside fitted pants and opt for a cropped version where possible.
4. Blazers
Style Notes: Styling a blazer throughout the winter months is all about adding layers. The French women we follow have been pairing the jacket with roll-neck jumpers and cashmere sweaters for a sophisticated street style look.
5. Brown Suede Boots
Style Notes: Update your regular winter boots the French-girl way by opting for a brown suede iteration instead of classic black.
6. Button-Front Jeans
Style Notes: Perfectly cut jeans seem to be a staple in every French woman’s wardrobe. Add a classic touch to your next pair by opting for a button-front pair.
