The Spring Priority List: 7 Basic Essentials for a Trendy Wardrobe

Let’s just call a spade a spade. There are a lot of appealing spring trends out there—from modern shoe silhouettes to current denim cuts. As a result, it can seem a bit daunting deciphering just where to start when it comes to curating that ideal spring wardrobe. An introductory edit is truly key. On that note, I believe there are a few key pieces worth considering first to build a trendy wardrobe. And believe it or not, the must-haves in question just so happen to skew on the basic side as well (rather, those next-level basics). After all, building a wardrobe with fresh basics will ultimately give you the necessary framework to create fashion-forward looks.

With all that in mind, I created a little checklist below to keep in the back of your mind (or to save to your phone to reference when you’re shopping) that focuses on the clothing essentials that are a priority this season—at least in my eyes. And to showcase said basics in action, I also included a bit of styling and shopping inspiration to give you a jump start on crafting that A+ spring wardrobe.

1. Mini Skirt

We recently declared a mini skirt as one of the key silhouettes of the season, especially since they were seen all over the runways. Its versatility is particularly noteworthy with the ability to be dressed up with a blouse and heels or down with a tank and boots or sneakers.

2. Wide Leg Jeans

While there is a range of jean styles to test out right now, wide-leg jeans are the denim cut du jour with their '90s but very-right-now feel worn with just about any staple in your arsenal.

3. Knitted Polo

While a polo shirt could be considered standard, the spring collections proved that collared knits are actually one of the most sought-after basics out there. Whether in a heavier sweater material or ribbed, it’s a certified must-have for sure.

4. Trench Coat

You’d be hard-pressed not to find a style setter with a reimagined trench coat in their arsenal this season. Rightfully so, the updated classic piece could basically be worn daily as the topper of choice, adding a modern flair to even the simplest of ensembles.

5. Joggers

There’s been quite the resurgence of joggers as everyday wear this season with fashion people sometimes trading in leggings for sweatpants. We’re seeing basic joggers teamed with sophisticated separates like blazers and other strong tailoring pieces.

6. Cardigan Set

Sweater sets have quickly been ramping up to be a top staple among the fashion crowd as a cool way to bring polish to an ensemble. Whether worn with jeans, trousers, or, hey, even that denim skirt, this coordinating staple is worth a go.
