Every Celeb Is Ditching Heels for These 9 Flat-Shoe Styles
We're in the midst of a comfort epidemic, and I'm here for it. Fed up with the usual faff of high heels, A-listers have decided to switch things up and go low. Many of the women we follow for style advice have been having a rather casual few weeks or so, stepping into sensible, bouncy, lovely flat shoes. Natalie Portman has been seen in Nikes (also carrying a very nice new Dior bag), Gigi Hadid in Birkenstocks, Cate Blanchett in thick-soled white sneakers (they matched with her shocking pink trouser suit) and Emma Roberts in a range of cute summer dresses with different ballet pumps.
There are more names and outfits on this growing list of flat shoe lovers, and we don't expect the trend to stop any time soon. (Why would it when brogues, ballet pumps and kicks can look just as chic as anything stacked and are immeasurably easier to wear on a day-to-day basis?) We're glad celebs have caught up with the rest of us. Whether in Paris or L.A., New York or London, there's a general consensus that heels are fine and dandy for a special occasion, but if you want to get your to-do list done, you'll probably need a decent pair of flats. Victoria Beckham once said she "can't concentrate in flats," but we can't concentrate on anything else right now besides these chic, foot-friendly options.
Keep scrolling to see who is wearing them and shop the styles for yourself.
Style Notes: Stacey Dooley is our minimalist queen, often finishing her simple denim looks off with chic slides like these Gucci ones.
Style Notes: These Miu Miu slingbacks tap into Emma Roberts's retro style perfectly. They look good with a sundress, but will work just as easily with jeans and a jumper come autumn. They're now sold out due to the fact they came out last winter, but we have some other options for you below.
Style Notes: Natalie Portman's colourful Nikes match her colourful Dior bag strap. We also like that the rest of her outfit is perfectly plain.
Style Notes: Trust OG cool girl Chloë Sevigny to be the one wearing white socks with black loafers. This look is very East London.
Style Notes: We're used to seeing Gigi in either sneakers or skyscraper heels, but this has got to be a first. Birkenstocks with socks? Not just for ahead-of-the-curve hiking dads, you know.
Style Notes: Emily Ratajkowski has a wardrobe full of classic sneakers, and switches between Adidas Originals Gazelles and Nike Air Max 97s.
Style Notes: Olivia Palermo has quite a few pairs of flat shoes in her repertoire. She often uses daintier versions (like these Dior slingbacks) with dresses and skirts, and then employs brogues or Derby flats for more tailored looks.
Style Notes: Cate Blanchett has been looking incredible all week, and this pink suit ticks a lot of boxes even before you get to her well-chosen accessories.
Style Notes: Fluffy slides are a boomerang trend. As soon as you think they're out, they're back again and looking cute. Here, Lucy Hale styles her with ripped jeans and a band tee to balance out the frivolity.
Next up, the major shoe trends of autumn 2019.
