Blanket-Coats: The Outerwear Trend Going Viral on TikTok

What started as a micro-trend in the world of outerwear, blanket-coats are now going viral on TikTok, where we're seeing many fashion conversations unfold. Toteme's signature scarf-jacket—finished with a fringed scarf, chain-stitch embroidered pockets and edges, and a blanket-like wool material—is specifically the cult buy that is landing everywhere on my feed. Perhaps that is why the piece is sold out practically everywhere and carving itself out as one of the key buys for fall. What's interesting is that it isn't a new style this season but one that has been brought back from earlier years, but it is officially in its moment.

While Toteme's iconic piece is the most talked-about style on TikTok, the blanket-coat trend itself is heating up. Designers such as Balenciaga, Tove, and Helsa have their own takes on the trend, with styles including everything from built-in scarves to fringe and whipstitched trim. Ahead, see more about the blanket-coat trend that's winning out this season.

I credit Toteme with putting the blanket-coat trend on the map. Though the piece isn't new this season, it has now solidified itself as a timeless investment buy to add to your closet if you can get your hands on one in your size.

Built-in scarves are one of the signature details found on many blanket-coats. Go for a sleek, minimal piece, as spotted in Tove's collection. Or head to H&M for a cozy puffer version.

Fringed

This season, I'm seeing more blanket-coats land on the market with fringed details. Consider this the directional way we're seeing shackets evolve this fall.

Stitched

One of my favorite details? Stitching. Typically found on the jacket edges and pockets, exposed contrast stitches lend a cool, artisanal quality to the outerwear pieces.
