According to Editors and Derms, These $20-and-Under Face Masks Might Rival a $200 Facial
Glowing skin ahead.

Face masks are sneaky skincare products that practically coerce us to pull out our credit cards and swipe with abandon. Not only does the packaging get prettier as more seep into the beauty scene, but the benefits, technology, and general allure of these potent products are increasing with each launch. Ingredients are becoming more advanced, and suddenly, the idea of add-ons like crushed diamonds, 24-karat gold, exfoliating acids, and superfoods makes forking over $50 to $100-plus seem like the norm. But of course, it doesn't have to be.
Sure, there are plenty of luxury face masks that we salivate over, but the quality of drugstore beauty offerings has made us take a smarter (ahem, more fiscally responsible) approach to skincare. For $25 and under, you can still satisfy your craving for high-end ingredients and results, just at a fraction of the cost.
“A face mask doesn’t need to be expensive to be effective,” agrees board-certified dermatologist Dara Spearman, MD. “In my opinion, any face mask [that’s] formulated with quality ingredients and doesn’t irritate the skin is a great option.” According to the derm, it all comes down to what you’re looking for in a face mask (hydration, brightening, etc) that makes the difference, and any product worth its salt will do that regardless of price.
We're fans of cost-effective products that deliver real results, so we’ve gathered the best drugstore face masks based on dermatologist recommendations (and our ample experience testing them) to write up your official shopping list. Below, the eight best drugstore face masks money can buy.
The Best Drugstore Face Masks, at a Glance
- Best Overall: Neutrogena Moisturizing Hydro Boost Hydrating Face Mask
- Best for Acne-Prone Skin: The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque
- Best for Dull Skin: ESW Beauty Pineapple Bliss Revitalizing Raw Juice Mask
- Best for Blackheads: Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mask
- Best Detoxifying: Burt's Bees Detoxifying Biocellulose Single-Use Gel Face Mask
Best Overall: Neutrogena Moisturizing Hydro Boost Hydrating Face Mask
Pros: Boosts hydration, amenable price point, gentle formula
Cons: Honestly, none
Type: Gel sheet mask | Wear time: 15-30 min. | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid
When WWW editors and derms head to the drugstore, the first face mask they’re looking for is this sheet mask from Neutrogena. The smooth, hydrogel formula is enriched with hyaluronic acid, gives dry skin an extra potent dose of hydration when worn for up to 30 minutes. “Hydrogel masks like this conform well to the contours of the skin,” explains double board-certified dermatologist, Brendan Camp, MD, FAAD. “It contains purified hyaluronic acid to leave skin hydrated, smooth, and supple.” Plus, this material keeps the mask from slipping and sliding while you wear it—one of the very few drawbacks of sheet masks.
Customer review: “I love to use these over a thick moisturizer to really lock the product in. I leave on for at least 30 minutes while I watch a show and my skin GLOWS afterwards! Major plus for me is that these come in two sheets, for top and bottom half of your face, so you can ensure the fit is just right. I also love to use these before makeup application if I want my skin to be extra hydrated!”
Best for Acne-Prone Skin: The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque
Pros: Gently exfoliates, unclogs pores, enhances glow
Cons: May be too astringent for dry or very sensitive skin
Type: Charcoal mask | Wear time: 10 min. | Key ingredients: 2% salicylic acid, kaolin clay, charcoal powder
Derms race to recommend this pore-cleaning face mask from The Ordinary, which stands at a reasonable price and delivers the results of a high-tech, spendy facial. “I highly recommend products from The Ordinary as they are both affordable and effective,” explains Spearman. She hand-picks this formula for its junk-free formula (no fragrance, alcohol, aluminum, oil, silicones, or sulfates here) and gentle exfoliation properties. “It is formulated with salicylic acid, charcoal, and clay to remove dead skin cells and impurities, and reduce build up,” she adds. Camp also adds this budget-friendly pick to his list for its ability to “target skin dullness and textural irregularities.”
Customer review: “I have oily, acne-prone skin and this leaves my skin incredibly soft, smoothes out texture very nicely. Doesn't feel irritating in any way, doesn't burn or tingle like some other masks. I wish it had more quantity for the price but I've been using it once a week and it's not running out badly. I honestly have noticed less breakouts since I started using it, will 100% buy again when it runs out.”
Best for Dull Skin: ESW Beauty Pineapple Bliss Revitalizing Raw Juice Mask
Pros: Super hydrating, calms inflamed skin, low price
Cons: Extremely wet-feeling
Type: Sheet mask | Wear time: 15-20 min. | Key ingredients: Kiwi, ginger, and pear extracts
Our team tests beauty products ad nauseum, so when something stays in our skincare-obsessed editors’ routines, we scream about it from the rooftops. Beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock as a refined taste in skincare (she’s tried hundreds of serums, lotions, and more), but the addition of this $5 face mask was what took her skin from good to glowing. “My skin looked calm, smooth, bright, and hydrated,” she previously wrote after first testing this plant-based mask, enriched with kiwi, pear, and ginger extracts that soothed and reinvigorated her irritated, dry skin. “I knew I had found my new skincare secret weapon. Since then, I've been slowly but surely stocking up on them,” she added.
Customer review: “It’s wetter than water itself it really goes into the skin and calms it down. I’d literally gained over 20 new pimples in one day after wearing a mask and put this on, they all sank down a lot. My face looked much better.”

Best for Blackheads: Innisfree Super Volcanic Clay Mask
Pros: Effectively cleans pores, gently exfoliates, great for spot treatments
Cons: Can be a bit drying for dry and sensitive skin types
Type: Face scrub | Wear time: None, wash-off | Key ingredients: 1% salicylic acid, green tea extract, milled bamboo
If you’ve ever leaned in close and looked at your nose in the mirror, you’ve likely discovered row after row of small, pesky blackheads. But before you pull out the painful pore strips, Kulfi Beauty founder Priyanka Ganjoo recommends trying this clay mask from K-beauty brand Innisfree. Packed with oil-absorbing volcanic ash and AHAs for skin-smoothing, pore-minimizing results, this stone-colored clay is ideal for acne-prone and oily skin. You can even use it to spot-treat nose blackheads, or anywhere else that needs it. “I know the mask is supposed to be for the face, but I lather it all over my body because it leaves the skin so soft and supple while helping with body acne,” Ganjoo previously told WWW. “It's less expensive than a spa day—so, girl math!"
Customer review: “This has been a lifesaver for my giant blackhead prone pores and hormonal cystic acne. I use it twice a week at night as part of my routine, it dries down so nice and SOFT, not like the bentonite clay masks which feel brittle and itchy when they’re dry. My skin is smooth, soft, bright and redness is reduced so much when I wash it off. There’s also so much in the jar vs how much you need per mask so it will last a long time, I’ve used it 5 times already and barely made a dent.”
Best Detoxifying: Burt's Bees Detoxifying Biocellulose Single-Use Gel Face Mask
Pros: Lowest-priced pick, revitalizes and soothes skin
Cons: Customers had difficulty finding the mask inside its mesh packaging
Type: Sheet mask | Wear time: 10 min. | Key ingredients: Charcoal, green tea, vitamin E
If you’re experiencing irritated, inflamed skin, or simply want to boost your natural radiance, experts say this is the pick of the litter. “Burt’s Bees is a trusted brand that formulates their products without harsh ingredients,” Spearman explains. “This mask is particularly [great] for detoxing the skin and is made with charcoal and green tea to remove debris and impurities from the skin,” the dermatologist adds. Though described as a gel mask, this packet houses a sheet mask that contours snugly to the shape of your face for easy, no-fuss wear. Just be sure to remove the covers to find the mask inside.
Customer review: “My daughter got me several different brands Christmas stocking stuffers and I fell in love with this brand. If I may point out, I am a 53 year-old Black American woman that can pass for 43 and my skin care regimen is extremely important me, so this is something additional I do 3 times a week. I also like the Vitamin C Mask, that glow it provides is phenomenal. Ladies don't miss out on these home care products, it's on [my] must-have list.”
Best Clay: Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
Pros: Great size for value, fast-working, multi-purpose
Cons: Requires prep time and self-mixing
Type: Clay mask | Wear time: 15-20 minutes | Key ingredients: Pure bentonite clay
Clay is one of the most powerful natural ingredients in skincare history, with the ability to tighten, firm, and purify clogged skin. Former WWW editor Katie Behron discovered this clay mask after being introduced to it by her roommate who struggled with hormonal acne, and this jaw of pore-cleansing clay was just the ticket. All you need is water (or raw apple cider vinegar) to turn this powder into a pore-purifying, skin-firming slather. “I honestly wasn't expecting any immediate results, but I was shocked by how fast the mask worked on my skin,” Behron previously wrote. “Thirty minutes after taking the mask off, I noticed that the pimple on my cheek had already shrunk slightly and was less inflamed than before, and the texture and redness on my forehead were gone.”
Customer review: “I just would like to start by saying I never leave reviews lol but I'm suffering from post-pill acne (coming off of birth control) and I had three hard, stubborn, deep cysts and daily breakouts. I've been hearing and seeing so many people use this clay mask with the same problem as me so I decided to give it a try. Last night was my 5th time using and my face has never been smoother and clear since before birth control. I plan on using for the rest of my life lol I love this product and I'm so excited I found something that works!!!! If you're reading this, it's your sign.”

Best Overnight: La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5 Soothing Therapeutic Multi Purpose Cream
Pros: Deeply hydrating, boosts glow, versatile usage
Cons: Spendy for the drugstore
Type: Cream | Wear time: 8 hr. | Key ingredients: Thermal spring water, vitamin B5, shea butter
If you experience dry skin, it can be uniquely hard to deliver the necessary amount of hydration to your skin with simple creams and serums. Enter, the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5: a powerful sleeping mask that delivers overnight hydration and leaves your skin dewy, plump, and refreshed by morning. The thick balm is infused with a cocktail of vitamin B5, shea butter, and thermal spring water (to name a few), offering results like calmer skin and restorative hydration when you slather it on before bed. “Any redness or irritation that was present the night before has vanished, and my skin feels petal-soft,” McLintock previously recounted after a night of use. “Success.”
Customer review: “This stuff is incredible. It’s definitely on the pricey side but absolutely worth it. It melts into the skin beautifully, leaving it soft, calm, and nourished without feeling greasy or heavy. It’s deeply moisturising and soothing, perfect for those days when my skin feels drier than the Sahara or when retinol has left it a little stressed out. Honestly, it’s one of those products that makes my skin feel instantly relieved and back to life again.”

Best Glowy: Loops Double Take Glow Mask
Pros: Boost luminosity, minimizes appearance of fine lines, sticks well to skin
Cons: Nothing to mention
Type: Gel sheet mask | Wear time: 10 min. | Key ingredients: Sunflower seed oil, vitamin E, aloe vera
In the era of glass skin, beauty lovers, experts, and editors alike seem to stop at nothing to achieve dewy, glowy skin. Using a face mask can be one of the best (and most relaxing) ways to achieve a lit-from-within glow, and Camp recommends this hydrogel face mask for candlelit skin. “Made with hydrogel technology, this biodegradable mask is made with sunflower seed oil, vitamin E, aloe vera and Hyalurosmooth, a plant-derived form of hyaluronic acid, to plump the look of fine lines and leave skin feeling smoother,” he explains. Plus, its grippy hydrogel material conforms to the contours of your skin, meaning you can get up and move without the stuff slipping onto the floor.
Customer review: “I see why this face mask is priced a lot higher than others. It's unlike any other mask I've tried. I love the material, it's so simple and easy to put on, fits on my face perfectly and does a great job at making my face soft and glowy. I'll definitely get this one again next time I'm in Target.”

What to Look For in a Drugstore Face Mask
- Skin type: The first thing to consider is the condition of your skin before selecting your perfect mask at the drugstore, whether it be dry, oily, sensitive, or a combination of the above. Not all masks are made equal, so be sure to check the ingredients and assess our list before making your selections (i.e. Neutrogena’s Moisturizing Hydro Boost Face Mask for dry skin, The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Masque for acne-prone, etc.).
- Ingredients: “Depending on what benefits you’re looking for, like hydration or brightening, the ingredients are important,” says Spearman. The derm recommends looking for “trusted ingredients like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid,” and more in the ingredients list to ensure that your skin receiving an effective treatment that leads to noticeable results.
- Type: Face masks come in many shapes and forms, from overnight formulas to wash-off clay slathers and pre-soaked sheets. The more important things to keep in mind are your skin concerns and the right cocktail of ingredients, while the type of mask you favor boils down to personal preferece. If you’d rather wear a mask for ten minutes and wash it off, try a sheet mask like Burt's Bees’ Detoxifying Biocellulose Face Mask. But if you don’t mind going the extra mile and wearing a deep-conditioning mask overnight, you’ll fall for the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5.
Are cheap face masks more worth it than expensive ones?
Short answer? Yes and no. Both Spearman and Camp agree that face masks aren’t wholly necessary to a good skincare routine—they are simply great additions, should you want to use them. “Masks offer a way to improve skin hydration and effectively deliver active ingredients to the skin,” Camp explains, the potency and close contact of these products remaining the same for most products regardless of price. However, both agree that spendier masks may include higher-quality ingredients and materials that can produce faster, more noticeable results. But that’s not to say that a drugstore mask won’t give you a perfectly good glow. “Affordable face masks can be effective and if they produce results for you, then there is no need to purchase an expensive one,” says Spearman.
What should you do after using a drugstore face mask?
“If it’s a sheet mask, pat the excess into your skin and use moisturizer,” Spearman instructs. “If it’s a clay mask or rinse-off mask, wash with lukewarm water, dry gently, and moisturize.” It’s important to remember to lock in the benefits of your face mask with a great moisturizer, which acts as a sealant.
“Masks are a nice addition to a basic skin care routine, but not a replacement,” Camp reminds us. “When using a mask, it is important to still wash your face, use a moisturizer, and protect skin from ultraviolet radiation with the use of a daily SPF moisturizer.”
