When is the best time to use a scalp exfoliator?
According to Small, the best time to use a scalp exfoliator is before shampooing, on dry or slightly damp hair one to two times per week. "This allows the exfoliant to directly target buildup without being diluted by water or competing with other products," he says. Unless stated otherwise (or if you're using it as a formula that doubles as a shampoo), using it as a pre-wash allows you scalp to absorb the shampoo or any other treatments.
How do you know if you’re over-exfoliating your scalp?
Every exfoliating product comes with very specific instructions on how and how often to use it. Still, everyone has a slightly different response to ingredients, so keeping tabs to make sure you're not over-exfoliating is a must.
