Anyone who knows me will know that Italy is my favourite place in the entire world. What’s not to love about it? It’s a country I—and my taste buds—could never grow tired of. From the serene beauty of the northern lakes and Dolomites to the ancient charm of Rome, every visit has deepened my appreciation for Italian culture. My next trip is to Florence, and there is one place that's top of my list to visit, and no, it's not a restaurant or a gelato spot. It's Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, one of the world's oldest beauty brands and perfume houses.
When it comes to heritage beauty brands, few rival the legacy of Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Widely considered the world's oldest pharmacy, it opened in Florence in 1221, when a group of Dominican friars established the convent of Santa Maria Novella and cultivated a botanical garden where the natural ingredients were then used for medicines, ointments and balms. More than 800 years on, the botanical craftsmanship remains today. Its collection has expanded over the centuries to include fragrances, skincare and body care, and both the draw-dropping interiors of the store and every product in the wooden apothecary cabinets are steeped in Florentine history. Its fragrances are amongst some of the oldest in the world, and the brand has even created scents for royalty.

1. Acqua
Key notes: Pear, freesia, lotus, musk
This one was love at first spritz. It's like diving into the cool, sparkling waters of an Italian lake, or sitting nearby a trickling fountain in the dappled shade of pear trees whilst enjoying an aperitivo. It's a fresh floral perfume, and the type of aquatic scent that I want to liberally splash all over my skin in the summer—it's so easy to wear. It draws its inspiration from the Grotta degli Animali, a 16th-century water fountain set in Villa Medicea di Castello.
2. L'Iris
Key notes: Galbanum, timur pepper, neroli, geranium, magnolia champaca, jasmine sambac, iris, musk, ambergris
If you want to try a fragrance that is quintessentially Florentine, then this is the one to try. Iris is not only Florence's official symbol, but the 16th-century French queen Catherine de' Medici (who commissioned the brand to create a fragrance—Acqua della Regina) introduced the Tuscan tradition of iris-scented leather gloves to France. It's also one of the most expensive ingredients in perfumery, so naturally carries an air of luxury. This floral, powdery, soapy scent leaves you feeling elegant and clean-smelling. If you want to smell like a graceful Renaissance queen, then I implore you to try it.
3. Nectarium

Santa Maria Novella's newest scent is exclusive to Harrods, so no trip to Italy is required for this one. It does, however, transport you straight to an Italian botanical garden. Specifically, into nectar-filled flowers. It's aromatic, a little smoky and bitter at first, but as it wears on the skin, the honeyed accent blooms further into a golden, nectar-like haze that lingers on the skin and becomes sweeter with every passing hour. Combined with the scent of lavender, it feels almost nostalgic and dream-like. It makes me feel like I've stepped into a secret flower garden that's abuzz with bumblebees.
4. Tabacco Toscano
Key notes: Bergamot, Tuscan tobacco leaves, leather, amber, birchwood, cedarwood, guaiacum, sandalwood, musk, vanilla
I'm not usually one for a smoky perfume, but this one changed everything for me, and it's now one of my favourites of the bunch. Rather than being overpowering like some tobacco scents can be, this sensual, smoky scent lingers close to the skin, becoming at one with the natural warmth it. Think unfurling plumes of smoke, charred, glowing embers of vanilla and old leather-bound books illuminated by a crackling fireplace.
5. Rose Gardenia
Key notes: Bergamot, almond blossom, orange blossom, gardenia, centifolia rose, fig leaf, jasmine, sandalwood, vanilla, musk
Floral perfume lovers, step forward. Imagine wandering through an Italian rose garden after a downpour, with pink and white flowers dewy with raindrops on their petals. Gardenia gives it a creamy quality that feels like you're sinking into a bed of fluffy white petals, and the dry-down is equally enchanting, with smooth sandalwood, vanilla and skin-like musk.

Melograno (the Italian word for the pomegranate tree) is one of the brand's most iconic fragrances. When you imagine a classic perfume, this is exactly how that smells. It's soapy and aldehydic, yet earthy and mossy, and spicy and fruity all at once.
