Not Fruity, Not Floral—This Perfume Is My Secret to Smelling Expensive This Summer
These matcha fragrances are fresh, green, earthy delights.
When it comes to the best perfumes, it's often the same old notes knocking around. Whether it's a vanilla fragrance, a rose scent or a citrusy perfume, most of my favourite fragrances belong in one of these camps. There's nothing wrong with this, of course. In fact, these are some of my most-complimented scents. However, this summer I've been craving something a little... different. Enter, matcha perfumes.
Whether you're a matcha fan or not, there's no denying how expensive matcha perfumes can smell, especially during the warmer weather. In fact, the light, fresh, tea-like aroma is incredibly popular within the fragrance industry, with more and more brands creating matcha-inspired fragrances.
There are now so many options on the market that I've created my ultimate edit of the best matcha perfumes to spritz into the season ahead. From luxury fragrance brands such as Le Labo to affordable favourites from Zara, keep on scrolling for a beauty editor's top picks...

1. Le Labo Thé Matcha 26
Key notes: Matcha tea accord, fig, vetiver, cedar woods, bitter orange
You know I'm a sucker for Le Labo fragrances, but this one really is a work of art. With the aroma of Japanese matcha tea, this fresh, grounding fragrance sits closely to the skin for an intimate wearing experience. It's a green, earthy fragrance at heart, but notes of creamy fig and crisp bitter orange instantly elevate it, making it stand out as one of the best matcha perfumes on the market.
2. Bvlgari Eau Parfumée Thé Vert
Key notes: Neroli petals accord, green tea, bergamot
Whilst this isn't a true matcha perfume, it does contain notes of green tea, giving it the fresh, earthy aroma many matcha scents have. In my opinion, it's one of the most luxurious options out there. Not only is the bottle to die for, but the citrusy, floral aroma is so uplifting, it's bound to put a smile on your face. If you want to smell like you've just spent the day sunbathing in a beautiful Italian garden, this is the perfume for you.
3. Zara Sweet Matcha Day
Key notes: Matcha latte, sandalwood, musk
Zara does some of the best affordable fragrances of all time, and Sweet Matcha Day is no exception. As the name suggests, this is a gourmand take on a matcha fragrance, and to me, it smells like a yummy, creamy matcha concoction from Blank Street. Its warm, sweet, enveloping aroma always earns me compliments.
4. Phlur Matcha Milk
Key notes: Bergamot, black tea, matcha, macadamia milk, vanilla, musk, amber, patchouli
If you like your body sprays, you'll love this newish launch from Phlur. Whilst notes of bergamot, black tea and matcha create that signature earthy, uplifting aroma, it's the addition of macadamia milk, vanilla and musk that adds this warm, creamy, expensive-smelling undertone that makes you want to spritz it again and again.
5. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Media Cologne Forte
Key notes: Verbena accord, Italian bergamot, sweet fennel, hedione, woody musk
Again, not a typical "matcha" fragrance at heart, but definitely a fresh, citrusy, expensive-smelling aroma with subtle undertones that smell similar to matcha tea throughout. Whenever I spritz this, I'm immediately transported to sparkling, blue Italian waters. It's a vibrant summer scent that is bound to turn heads.
6. Molton Brown Tea Ceremony
Key notes: Green tea, matcha, white musk, wood accords
Last but by no means least, we have to talk about Molton Brown's Tea Ceremony. A truly rich, grounding scent experience, this perfume combines notes of matcha with white musk and wood accords for a fresh yet earthy aroma that lingers beautifully on the skin. I've been wearing this throughout the London heatwave we've been having, and it's the ultimate calming fragrance that makes me (almost) forget I'm standing on the sweaty Central Line.
