One thing to know about us American fashion girls is that we aren’t afraid to experiment with trends. Those clear plastic trench coats? We’re wearing them. Vinyl? We’ve tried everything from ruffled skirts to flared pants to cropped jackets. But here’s the thing with trends—when worn in the right way, they can come off as cool and stylish, but they can easily verge on “fashion victim” territory. So how do American girls pull off on-trend looks?
To find out, I asked my fellow Who What Wear editors to weigh in. We all agreed that it’s really a kind of balancing act—wearing too many trends at once is something we tend to avoid. We also keep proportions in mind. While anything oversize needs to be paired with something more tailored, more casual pieces also need to be balanced out with something more dressy.

“I’m cautious about wearing too many trends at once at the risk of looking like a fashion victim. Instead, I focus on one trend per outfit. For example, since the below pants are very trend-driven, I’d balance out the look by styling them with a simple top.”
“American girls never underestimate a great pair of denim. Whether it be with a crop top for a night out, a blazer for the office, or a vintage T-shirt on the weekends, you can bet your bottom dollar that when American girls wear denim, they wear it extremely well.”
“When wearing something oversize on top, I avoid pairing it with other oversize pieces so that the overall look comes across as polished rather than sloppy. For example, if I’m wearing an oversize sweater, I’ll pair it with slim trousers or skinny jeans.”
“I tend to steer clear of overly casual outfits. For example, if I wear a hoodie, I’ll skip the matching sweatpants and wear it with jeans instead. Other people can definitely pull off a full tracksuit and look chic, but I’m just not one of them! I love this graphic hoodie from I Am Gia, a brand Kaia Gerber and Bella Hadid are also fans of.”
