Sally's Wardrobe in When Harry Met Sally Is So Winter 2024 Coded
When Harry Met Sally is one of my all time favourite films and as any committed Nora Ephron fan will know, as soon as the leaves turn, a re-watch is a non-negotiable.
Though TikTok may tell you "Nora Ephron Fall" has been and gone, my recent viewing of this cult classic left me more excited for winter dressing than I expected. In fact, the late ‘80s and early ‘90s trends reflected in Sally Albright’s city-girl wardrobe feel just as relevant today as they did back then.
From structured blazers to Sally’s love of chunky cable-knit jumpers, I found myself looking into my own wardrobe and piecing together a whole host of Sally-Albright-coded looks that echo the trends we’ve seen fashion people flocking to emulate this winter.
For the the film's 35th anniversary, I've dissected Sally Albright's wardrobe and pulled out the most winter 2024 feeling trends you're definitely going to want to copy this season.
5 Pieces from Sally Albright's Wardrobe That Feel So 2024
1. Cardigans
Style Notes: Rumour has it cardigans have overtaken jumpers this year on the knitwear leaderboard. Their simplicity makes them a perfect layering piece which might be why we've seen fashion people styling them so many different ways this season, often using them to add a pop of colour to a neutral outfit. Make like Sally and pair yours with a white shirt underneath or button up and tuck into a high-waisted pair of jeans for her take on a classic preppy outfit.

2. Structured Blazers
Style Notes: While you can't see this look so clearly here, in the film (we know just the clip), Sally is wearing a classic '80s-style jacket. It's all about shoulder pads and cinched waists, just look at the buzz around the wardrobes in Disney+'s new show Rivals if you're not convinced this silhouette will be making a strong comeback in 2025.

3. Corduroy
Style Notes: With designers like Mark Jacobs and Chloé successfully reintroducing touches of '70s style to the runways this year, it only feels right that corduroy gets it's flowers too. The sometimes-considered-dated texture has found a new wave of popularity this winter, with many fashion people and celebrities switching out jeans for cords. Sally's jacket here feels every bit current today and would probably fit right in on the Vinted wish lists of "Frazzled British Woman" loving Gen Zs.

4. Tailored Shorts
Style Notes: Over the summer we saw loads of stylish people opt into the Bermuda shorts trend and I can't wait to see this manifest into a Sally-esque trend for winter. In the film we see her character styling tailored shorts again and again paired with pop socks or tights and a pair of loafers. This outfit combo feels like a fresh way to update our skirts and tights outfits and exudes European chic. I can't wait to try it out for myself with an roomy tailored coat and chunky knit.

5. Refined Basics
Style Notes: As the chilly days roll in we rely on our basics more and more. And whether it's a new take on a classic roll neck or layering knits, Sally Albright's style in this film is perfect inspiration for elevating these winter wardrobe staples.
