When I planned a trip to Miami in July, I honestly was expecting the worst. Reading that the forecast would hit 90+ degrees during most of my visit, a sweat fest was predicted. Somehow, I breezed through the sweltering hot weather and I have one thing to thank for, my carefully curated wardrobe. The packing list I ended up bringing may have landed me with an overweight suitcase, but it also managed to keep me cool despite the heat.

After spending multiple summers in Florida, if there's one thing I know it's how to dress for humid and hot weather. The truth is that buying into pieces that are light and breezy, have cutouts, or modestly show skin is the way to go. You're going to thank me after I show you the 9 outfits below that I think you need to copy if your temperatures are as high as mine were.

1. Maxi Skirts

I usually wear pants on a flight, but after traveling in this maxi skirt, I may never go back. Dressing up on the plane gave me the confidence to make friends along the way and it felt great landing in style. I managed to stay comfortable and chic in this look.

For the first dinner of our trip, I wanted to wear something classic and this mini slip dress was exactly that. To make it feel like more of a fashion girl moment, I decided to style it up with neon accessories. This ended up being a recurring theme throughout the weekend as I realized a yellow bag and pink shoes made for the ultimate combination.

3. Crochet

I work with a very eclectic group of people so it's not every day where we're all fawning over just one trend. But my coworkers and I can all agree that crochet is it right now. It's the perfect look for luxury vacation wear, and I adore it.

4. Orange

Orange might just be the color of the year, and that title is well-deserved. While many people tend to shy away from bright colors, everyone I've seen wearing this one is simply glowing after putting it on. It looks amazing against the blue color of the ocean or pool.

5. Sporty Sunglasses

I have so many pairs of sunglasses that people often gasp when I come over and show them my collection. Despite having over 30 pairs, lately, the only thing I want to wear is this one. It's such a cool-girl look that I can't get enough of.

6. Chain-Detailing

Chain-detailing isn't going away any time soon. What started as a very minimalist addition to any look has multiplied over time and now chains are bigger and better than ever. I chose to wear them on a boat ride through the city in both my swimsuit and sunglasses.

7. Dramatic Hats

We took wide brim hats out of the Wild West and brought them to the beach. I love when a trend is both functional and flattering and this hat kept my skin safe from the sun. Will be wearing it on every vacation from now on.

8. Low-Rise Everything

I was nervous to wear low-rises on vacation, but as soon as I put on this matching set, all of my worries disappeared. When the weather is hot, try pressing pause on your high-waisted skirts and try on a low-rise one. You won't regret it.

9. Glitter Swimsuits

I can't open the Instagram app these days without seeing glittery swimsuits. Can you believe this is my first time trying the trend for myself? The results are in, it's amazing. A walking disco ball I became.

Sierra Mayhew was always destined to work in fashion, but she didn't know it at first. Growing up with no choice but to wear a rotation of school uniforms and activewear, her love for fashion really blossomed when she moved away for college and was able to finally define her very own personal style. Shortly thereafter, she interned at Elle magazine and instantly knew that editorial was for her. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, she worked for ShopBazaar, contributing regularly to Bazaar.com, and finally made her way to Who What Wear, where she is an associate editor. When she’s not working, you can catch her always trying to catch a flight, rollerblading through New York City traffic, or exploring the latest luxury vintage boutique.
