Disney Fans Will Obsess Over This New Coach Collaboration
“I am genuinely a huge Disney fan,” Stuart Vevers, executive creative director Coach, told us as soon as we sat down with him last week to get a peek at the latest collaboration. While Coach had originally created a Disney collection in 2016 (with sellout success, no less), now it’s taking inspiration from a specific point of polka dot–wearing inspiration: Minnie Mouse.
Just this afternoon, Coach and Minnie Mouse released their collaborative line, a “coming together of Minnie’s style and Coach’s style,” as Vevers puts it. The collection consists of the brand’s accessories as well as an exclusive ensemble seen on Minnie today while she attended a celebratory luncheon for her Hollywood Walk of Fame star. “We played with the idea of a nostalgic prairie dress, which is something we’ve done a lot of at Coach, with this patchwork of fabrics and nostalgic crystal trims,” Vevers said of designing for the mouse herself. “And then a little biker jacket. It’s very quintessential Coach and a lot of references from the spring runway like the crystal on the shoes.”
While the partnership seems like a no-brainer, considering Coach's past success in sparking nostalgia for Disney characters, it feels especially appropriate to Vever’s interpretation of the changing landscape for luxury fashion. “I’ve always had an obsession with youth culture—whether it’s the youth culture of today or a kind of nostalgia for the ‘60s and ’70s. I think today the rules of what luxury means are completely changing. Luxury or fashion used to be about a certain formality or investment, and those rules are just disappearing. For a younger person today, a sweatshirt, a T-shirt, a playful backpack, or a pair of sneakers can be a luxury item.”
With this in mind, some entry-level luxury shoppers with a love of all things Minnie might be more drawn to the collection’s playful wallets with cartoon illustrations or ear-detailed handbags.
All the pieces are available as of today on Coach’s site but are already selling quickly—further proving how successful this partnership of two iconic brands can be. “It’s about sticking to the things that make you unique,” Vevers responds when we ask about what keeps his own brand timeless. “The reason I joined Coach was, to me, it’s America’s house of leather. That’s what really excited me because you can explore ideas for the future but you’ve got this authenticity to reference: American style and American culture.” It also doesn’t hurt to count an American cultural icon like Minnie among your fans, either.
