If you feel like you're seeing chessboard motifs much more than usual at the moment, you wouldn't be the only one. From the Netflix series The Queen's Gambit—which centred entirely on the board game and just so happened to be one of the year's most-watched television shows—to the pattern which seems to be popping up all over social media, it seems both chess and checked prints are having a moment.
When it comes to the latter, there is one ubiquitous fashion buy that is at the heart of the trend: Stand Studio's check coat. Practically omnipresent across Instagram, we've seen Stand Studio's Nino faux fur coat on more influencers than we can count. The black and white iteration has been worn by Camille Charriere, while the beige and brown version has been spotted on Yoyo Cao, Kristen Lam and Janka Polliani. Stand has also created a teddy material option with a larger check, which we've seen on Ven's Wife Style's Renia Jaz and The Blab's Laberiane Ponton.
Right now the coat is in such high demand, it's virtually impossible to find online, having sold out on Stand's website, as well as Harvey Nichols and MatchesFashion. Though don't worry, we've done some digging and tracked down an e-commerce website with a full-size range still available.
Of course, chess patterns have expanded far beyond just Stand Studio's Insta-worthy coat. Checkerboard prints are also appearing across several other influencer-approved brands right now, including Paloma Wool, Lisa Says Gah and more.
