5 Trends Selena Perfected in the '90s
On this day 48 years ago, a true icon was born. Selena Quintanilla, also known as "La Reina,” was a major influence in both the Latinx community and mainstream music industry for her ethereal voice, effervescent personality, and, of course, her style. In the 24 years since the singer’s untimely passing, her legacy has inspired not only the lives of millions but also the closets of those who admired her most. (After all, the singer did own two successful fashion boutiques in Texas, way before musicians started becoming fashion designers.) Today, we’ll be dreaming of her in all the ways—from her chart-topping hits to her hoop earrings. Keep scrolling to see the five iconic trends Selena perfected in the ’90s.
Crop Tops
The "Como La Flor” singer was arguably the first celeb to sport crop tops for everyday wear. She often wore them with jeans, making sure her top was bright white for a chic contrast between the two pieces. A perfect look for summertime and beyond.
Denim
If anyone knew how to do flattering, curve-hugging denim, it was Selena. Her choice in jeans was strategic in that her pairs always featured a high waist to show off her hourglass silhouette. Now these are the "mom” jeans we’re here for.
Hoop Earrings
A staple in Selena’s wardrobe, hoop earrings have become synonymous with Latina culture, as traditionally they’re gifted for birthdays and special occasions. Long before hoops were in the jewelry arsenals of every fashion girl, La Reina made them a part of her everyday look. What can we say? The girl had great taste in accessories.
Matching Sets
Never one to blend in with the crowd, Quintanilla loved wearing coordinating sets for her concerts that were often custom-made. Whether it was a denim-on-denim or an all-leather look, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn’t want to wear her cool, edgy outfits.
Bold Lipstick
No roundup of Selena’s style would be complete without the mention of her iconic (and I mean iconic) red lipstick. The "Amor Prohibido” singer was known for her bold lips that sparked an entire beauty movement that continues today. In fact, in 2015, MAC released an entire Selena-inspired makeup collection to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her passing. When will your fave ever?
