I'm Terminating My Relationship With These 6 Trends—Here's Why
There comes a time every so often when you have to look at your closet with a discerning eye and decide which trends are worth holding onto and which are destined to be ditched. To be completely candid, it’s not always easy. If you’re like me and tend to hold onto fashion pieces for 10 years too long, then it can be a particularly grueling task. Good news: I’ve been an editor for almost a decade, and it has become my job to deem which trends are in and which simply are ready to go. Thus, I am here to help.
You may be wondering how often you should get rid of certain trends, and I’ve found the most success through doing this twice a season—meaning twice in the summer, fall, winter, and spring. Now that we’re in the midst of summer, it’s about time to assess your closet and say goodbye to pieces that have overstayed their welcome. As they say, when one door closes, another one opens. The fact that you are giving the boot to a few trends only means you have more room in your closet for something new. Ahead, I’m revealing the six trends I am officially terminating along with the six new trends I am embracing with open arms.
Terminating: Maxi Skirts
Keeping: Miniskirts
Hello, miniskirts. While the ease of a tiered maxi skirt has its place, it’s time to bare some legs. From bright-colored knit minis to minimal, pleated numbers, miniskirts are officially back.
Terminating: Scrunchies
Keeping: Silk Scarves
This past year, multipurpose fashion items have come to the forefront. The silk scarf has become an effortless everyday staple that can be worn over your hair like Cass Dimicco or tied as a sarong or top.
Terminating: Sweatpants
Keeping: Knit Co-Ords
Sweatpants had a really great run this year, but I have to admit that I’m over them. However, I can’t fully say goodbye to the ease of loungewear. Therefore, I am investing in knit coordinating sets for the rest of the summer.
Terminating: Black Sandal Slides
Keeping: Bright-Colored Sandals
This past year, I moved to Miami and quickly began to embrace the fashion. I began to say goodbye to boring black basics and introduce bold, bright colors, and I haven’t stopped. Up next are my sandals. I’m officially over sleek black slides (they had a good run), and I’m solely focused on fun, bright-colored sandals for now.
Terminating: Racerback Tanks
Keeping: Asymmetrical Tops
While I am embracing Miami’s more vibrant fashion, I am still a minimalist at heart, so I live for a simple tank top. This season, it’s all about the asymmetrical, one-shoulder straps—sorry, racerbacks.
Terminating: Mini Bags
Keeping: Voluminous Bags
I think we all remember when Jacquemus debuted micro mini bags—they made a major statement. But like most trends, they lived their life. This season, I am all about soft, voluminous handbags that make a quieter statement.
