When she’s not working as a journalist and social influencer, It girl Sabina Socol also shares her fashion expertise in our French Girl column. Come back each month for her perspective on Parisian style.
Taking a road trip around L.A. has been a dream of mine for ages. I always believed that experiencing this cinematic environment with my own senses had to be a true novelty, and I was right. It’s probably the same feeling Americans have when they first visit Paris. It’s one thing to have seen images of it, and it’s a whole other thing to live it. It might sound silly, but it’s something I’ve always been drawn to when it comes to travel. Soaking up every moment of any trip is a must for me, as I want to take advantage of every chance I have to understand the world I live in. Needless to say, I take packing for these sort of trips very seriously (just like I do the road trip playlist). So let’s dig into my six packing essentials for a California road trip!
Pack your favorite slip dresses.
You should always pack several slip dresses for a sunny destination. As indicated by their name, they’re just so easy to slip on and wear from day to night. Just wear them with your favorite pair of mules or sandals, and throw a cardigan on when it gets chilly. It’s just a super-easy look that's still effortlessly chic (and French).
Vintage attire is a must.
If you want to play it like a Cali girl, I feel like a vintage pair of Levi’s cut-off shorts paired with a vintage blouse or T-shirt is a must. This combo works on everyone, by the way, not just L.A. girls.
Mules, and nothing else but mules.
For a while now, I’ve been feeling like a good pair of mules was the perfect basic pair of shoes for warm weather. Just like a slip dress, they transition perfectly from day to night, and you can just as easily pair them with a casual outfit (like a vintage pair of shorts) or a party look. Also, they’re super comfortable, so what’s not to like about them? No wonder they’ve been seen on every It girl…
Don’t forget about social encounters.
Just like in Paris (or any other big city), when in L.A., it’s fun to let yourself be guided by your friends (like I had the chance to be when I was there) to the cool places to go out. In any case, pack a chic outfit or two because you never know who you might run into.
Whether it’s by the beach in Malibu or at your hotel’s pool, you might get the chance to sunbathe a little. The cruise collections of some of my favorite swimwear brand just came out at the time I was there, so it allowed me to be playful and have fun with my suits. But if it’s wintertime when you’re there, I’d recommend a one-piece bathing suit rather than a two-piece, just to play it safe.
