I'm Retiring Heels for the Foreseeable Future—Here Are the Flats I'm Buying RN
I think I can speak for most people when I say putting on a pair of heels instantly elevates my confidence and general excitement for any occasion ahead. But wearing heels isn't a casual endeavor. They take more energy to walk in, and they give you a commanding presence, which is totally fine—great, even—during normal life, but we're not living a normal life right now, are we?
Seeing as the need to shelter in place is only getting stronger, especially where I live in California, I have nowhere to go other than errand runs, socially distant walks and picnics, and the occasional appointment. It simply does not make sense to wear heels on any of those outings, so I'm retiring the ones I own and only shopping shoes with a flat sole. And honestly? I'm not bummed about it because there are so many cute flats on the market right now. It's summer, so there are endless sandal options and don't even get me started on the mules—my favorite shoe style. I also shopped out some classic sneakers, because some of the cutest outfits out there are dresses with sneakers. I closed everything out with some classic ballerinas, loafers, and all the flats in-between for when you need a bit more structure.
SANDALS
The coverage of a pair of mules with the airflow of sandals.
I know that buckle is going to require a little more effort, but these sandals are so cute I'd wear them every day regardless.
I love how chunky these straps are. These don't feel like your ordinary pair of three-band sandals.
I love layering two classic slide motifs (like a thick band and crisscross straps) over each other. And this mint-green color? I'm genuinely obsessed.
Don't dismiss crisscross straps. Raffa weaves aren't just for beach totes, after all.
Easy flip flops in multiple color hues are must-haves in the summertime.
Okay, I know the appeal of Birkenstocks is that they're affordable, but I love the leather edition of its single-strap sandal.
I love applying the tortoiseshell scheme to a shoe strap. Plus, these are on mega sale.
Something about these sandals feels really masculine—maybe it's the deep brown, maybe it's the chunky straps. Whatever it is, I love it. Definitely pair these with a romantic, flowy midi dress.
Mules and Slides
I love how this khaki suede almost looks mustard. It's perfect for summer styling.
Everything about these mules exudes business casual. The sturdy loafer style keeps things classic, the open back makes for easy sliding on, and the woven raffia keeps things laidback.
This woven texture almost makes these flats feel like sandals, and since it is summer, I'm not complaining about that.
Sneakers
My go-to summer outfit is a floral minidress with a pair of white Supergas. These simple sneakers will never do you wrong.
My socially distant walks keep getting longer and longer, which I'm sure will only continue to be true since I live in California. Thank god for these super-comfortable shoes that will keep me going through this pandemic.
I took up skateboarding in my late twenties, so my new go-to brand for sneakers is Vans, which is so easy because its always coming up with amazing new colors and styles.
This checkered print would look really cute with a basic white tee and denim shorts.
Flats and Loafers
Honestly, these are the only flats I need this summer (and probably for fall, too).
All of summer's footwear styles in one: woven leather, gladiator straps, and ankle jewelry.
A ribbed knit tank, vintage denim, and loads of silver jewelry would look perfect with these loafers.
Pretty square toes and slingback straps to liven up your ballerina flats.
If you're lucky enough to wear one of the two remaining sizes left for these shoes, go snag them!

Years of poring over intricate recipes with a fine-tooth comb and working with high-profile chefs has prepared her well for working with fashion's top brands while honoring Who What Wear's voice. Her background as a research editor makes her a finicky editor who will probably care too much about making sure all copy is as factually accurate and aligned with the house style guide as can be. Maybe it's because she's a Gemini, but her personal style is impossible to pin down: One day you'll see her in a turtleneck sweater tucked into a midi skirt with heeled boots, and the next, she'll be wearing mom jeans, a white Hanes tee, and classic Vans. At the end of the day, her style reflects her various moods. Sometimes it will be feminine and elegant, and others it will be grungy or androgynous. Certain things will always remain constant, though. She'll forever be on the hunt for the perfect pair of high-waisted jeans.
