Self-tanning is, more or less, an art form. To achieve a flawlessly bronzed complexion, there needs to be the perfect storm: the right formula for your skin type, non-streaky application, even tone, and long-lasting wear. Not to mention the techniques necessary for a perfect glow, whether by "tantouring," adding a few drops of bronzing serum to a dollop of your favorite moisturizer, or blending a gradual tanning lotion into the skin. It's hard to find the kinds that don't make your skin look like an orange peel, and, let's face it, a bad tan on your face is a lot more noticeable than one on the rest of you. So how do you find the right kind?
"A great facial self-tanner should be lightweight, buildable, acne-safe, and easy to control," says celebrity spray tan artist and founder of MSK Labs, Mishel Chernyavskiy. While the tanning expert stresses the importance of even application and fade, she distinguishes that the formula carries the most weight. "Your face is constantly being washed, treated, and exposed to skincare, so the formula needs to work with your skin, not against it," she explains.
Armed with this information, we researched and tested a handful of facial self-tanners before landing on the nine below, which impressed both experts and editors with the products' application, tones, formulas, staying power, and fade. Keep scrolling for the top contenders.
The Best Facial Self-Tanners of 2026, at a Glance
- Best Overall: Tan-Luxe The Face Illuminating Self Tan Drops
- Best Drugstore: L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Facial Drops
- Best Water: Saltyface Tanning Water
- Best Mist: St.Tropez Self Tan Purity Face Mist
- Best Express: Tan-Luxe The Express Water
Best Overall: Tan-Luxe The Face Illuminating Self Tan Drops
Pros: Supremely lightweight texture, skincare-spiked, color develops quickly
Cons: Honestly, none
Shades: 2 | Development: 2–4 hours | Key ingredients: Raspberry seed oil, aloe vera, vitamin E
Tan-Luxe is one of our favorite self-tanning brands thanks to its range of products that give our skin an even, natural-looking glow. This product is one of them. Add a few drops of the editor-loved self-tanning drops to your moisturizer, serum, or face oil to create a customized self-tan. Start with one drop at a time for a healthy glow and build up to four drops at a time for deeper color.
Customer review: "Amazing. This product proved every fear I had about self-tanners wrong. It wasn't streaky or shocking or uneven or a weird color. The application was so easy- just added it to my daily moisturizer as directed- and boom, I looked perfectly sun-kissed the next day. It took the edge off the wintertime paleness of my skin. I can also see that it could be used and layered to build a great color. I just ordered the body version and can't wait to try it on my winter pale legs."
Best Drugstore: L'Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Facial Drops
Pros: Budget-friendly, fragrance-free, absorbs quickly
Cons: Wish there were deeper shade options
Shades: 1 | Development: 4–6 hours | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, coconut water
A little goes a long way with these drugstore tanning drops. Although the brand recommends adding eight to 10 drops into your moisturizer, we recommend starting off smaller by just adding a few and then building up as you see fit. We like that they're dye- and fragrance-free, so they won't stain clothing or irritate our noses.
Customer review: "I love these face bronzing drops! They give the perfect amount of color and are so easy to use. I've gone through multiple bottles over the years and will continue to repurchase."
Best Water: Saltyface Tanning Water
Pros: Acne-safe, fragrance-free, very lightweight texture, extremely natural results
Cons: None I can think of
Shades: 2 | Development: 4–6 hours | Key ingredients: Organic sugar beets, aloe leaf extract, linden leaf extract
According to the pros, lightweight formulas are key when it comes to good facial self-tanners. Enter your new best friend: tanning water, specifically this one from Saltyface. The vegan self-tanner has a featherlight formula that your skin drinks right up, offering a sun-kissed, non-streaky, and fast-developing tan, available in both light-to-medium and medium-to-dark shades. Its DHA tanning agents are derived from organic sugar beets, meaning it's all-natural, and it's packed with skincare ingredients that make this water a total treat for your skin.
Customer review: "I’ve been using Saltyface Tanning Water for a few weeks now and honestly love it. It gives such a natural, healthy glow without looking orange or heavy on the skin. I usually avoid tanning products because they tend to make me break out, but this one hasn’t caused any irritation at all. The simple, clean ingredients were a huge selling point for me."
Best Mist: St.Tropez Self Tan Purity Face Mist
Pros: Versatile application, extremely lightweight, skincare-boosted
Cons: Some shoppers note uneven nozzle sprays
Shades: 1 | Development: 4–8 hours | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin
And the award for most convenient self-tanner goes to… this face mist. Simply spritz it over clean skin and wait for a tan to develop four to eight hours later. You can use it daily or whenever you feel like you want to boost your glow. We like that the formula includes hibiscus and mandarin orange extract for a little antioxidant action.
Customer review: "This mist is an OG for me! I have huge pores, and it’s the only self-tanner that doesn’t settle in them. So easy to use- just mist on over makeup or skin care. Sometimes I dampen a Beauty Blender with the product and dab it."
Best Express: Tan-Luxe The Express Water
Pros: Develops quickly, packed with nourishing ingredients
Cons: Some shoppers say it needs to be blended with a tanning mitt for a non-streaky finish
Shades: 1 | Development: 30 minutes | Key ingredients: Double hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, vitamin B5
If you're looking for a self-tanner that not only imparts a natural-looking sun-kissed glow but also does it swiftly, you'll want to add Tan-Luxe's Express water to your list. This tanning mist can be used on both the face and the body—simply mist it all over dry skin before blending with circular motions. The formula, which contains vitamins B5, and C, allantoin, and beta glucan, will make the skin soft and glowy.
Customer review: "Great product. Tan applies evenly and a very natural color. (I use it with a tan mitt). It doesn’t dry out my skin either and no strong smell (which is hard to find in self tanners!). Highly recommend!"
Best Mask: MSK Labs The Night Affair Overnight Tanning Mask
Pros: Puts skincare on the forefront, offers "glass skin," develops and fades naturally—never splotchy
Cons: Slightly expensive for the quantity
Shades: 1 | Development: 6–8 hours | Key ingredients: Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, squalane
As a celebrity tanning artist, Chernyavskiy's goal was to create a self-tanner that behaved more like skincare and less like your typical DHA-spiked tanner. Enter MSK Labs' The Night Affair: an overnight mask that imparts deep hydration, a stunningly natural-looking bronze, and the coveted "glass skin" appearance by morning. "It’s acne safe, dermatologist approved, buildable, gradual, and loaded with skincare ingredients that actually support both your tan and your skin," she explains. "To me, the best facial self-tanners stand apart because they don’t just tan the skin, they make the skin look better while the tan is developing."
Customer review: "Loved this brand! The night affair gave me glass skin and is a staple in my nighttime routine now, and the quickie made me perfectly glowy and sun-kissed! Fade is so even you don’t notice it."
Best Towelettes: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad Self Tanner for Face
Pros: Develops and fades evenly, lasts for several days, exfoliates simultaneously
Cons: On the expensive side
Shades: 1 | Development: 1 hour | Key ingredients: Glycolic acid, vitamin E, encapsulated CHA
Tanning is normally a multistep process. You have to exfoliate, then you have to tan, and then you have to moisturize once the tan has developed. Dr. Dennis Gross has eliminated one step by formulating these presoaked towelettes with AHAs and BHAs to exfoliate while you tan.
Customer review: "I'm super fair and have used many, many self tanners, ranging from drugstore to super high end. I also have dry, acne prone skin, and using self tanner on my face has always resulted in more breakouts and heightened congestion around my chin and t-zone. THAT SAID. This self tanner is truly the best I've ever used. […]. Another huge positive of the exfoliating aspect is that the application is perfectly even. EVERY. TIME."
Best Spray: Sugared and Bronzed Sunless Tanning Water
Pros: Won't clog pores, suitable for all skin types, dermatologist-approved
Cons: Some shoppers note that it can be dehydrating to dry skin types
Shades: 1 | Development: 8 hours | Key ingredients: Macadamia seed oil, jojoba seed oil, argan oil
Another sprayable tanning water worth considering is the lightweight option from Sugared and Bronzed. The famous airbrush tanning brand transfers the high quality of its in-salon treatments into a product with this refreshing mist, which can be spritzed on before or after makeup for an even glow. Sugared and Bronzed founder Courtney Claghorn designed this formula to "deliver customizable color while fitting seamlessly into a daily skincare regimen," making it easy for the on-the-go sunless tanner who can't devote hours to sitting in self-tanning mousse.
Customer review: "I use this frequently on my face when I want a refresher since you can also mist it over makeup. It is buildable, not an instant dark result like other face tanners which is great because I use midday, I don't feel stressed to wash it off before my evening cleanse. Super easy application. Never had an issue with streaking."
Best Hydrating: Clarins Self-Tanning Face Booster Drops
Pros: Made of 99% natural ingredients, gentle formula, boosts hydration
Cons: Doesn't offer the most noticeable tan; better for those seeking subtle results
Shades: 1 | Development: 4–8 hours | Key ingredients: Glycerin, aloe vera
If you're looking for a super-subtle, dry skin–friendly self-tanning product, this is it. Adding just a couple of drops to your moisturizer will give your face a healthy, natural-looking glow. Continue to use it daily, or every other day, and it will slowly build in intensity.
Customer review: "SO happy I gave this a try. Just mixed 2 drops in the palm of my hand with my usual facial moisturizer and it develops into a subtle tan. Can use a few days in a row if you want to build more colour. Will use while on vacation so I won't bother with foundation."
What to Look For in a Facial Self-Tanner
- Texture: According to both Claghorn and Chernyavskiy, lightweight textures are of paramount importance when it comes to a facial self-tanner. "I look for formulas that are lightweight, buildable, and leave skin looking healthy and radiant," says Claghorn. These not only improve absorption rates but are also easier to blend, which encourages smoother application and fewer streaks.
- Formula: Your self-tanner should do more for you than temporarily bronze your skin tone, and both experts agree that basic tanning properties are the bare minimum. "A great facial self-tanner should feel like an extension of your skincare routine," says Claghorn. Chernyavskiy agrees, sharing that she runs every facial self-tanner through an "acne-safe checker" site. "If my self-tan is going to break me out, I don’t want it on my face," she states.
Which types of facial self-tanners are best for different skin types?
"For every skin type, the main focus for a great tan is hydration," says Chernyavskiy. "Hydrated skin always tans more evenly and fades better, while dry skin is more likely to grab color and become patchy." The tan artist broke down which formula types are best for different complexions, from dry types to oily and mature:
- Dry skin: Serums or treatment-style formulas are great because they help keep the skin hydrated.
- Oily skin: Lightweight gels or mists can work well, as long as they’re not too drying.
- Mature skin: I’d usually stay away from mists because they can settle unevenly or be harder to control. I’d focus more on gels, serums, or hydrating treatment formulas.
- Acne-prone skin: Look for lightweight, noncomedogenic, acne-safe formulas, and always check the ingredient list first.
Can you use a facial self-tanner if you have rosacea?
Beauty lovers with sensitive skin or rosacea can use self-tanner on their face, but must be a bit more discerning about the types of formulas they're purchasing. "Rosacea-prone skin can react differently depending on the person, their triggers, and whether they’re actively flaring," Chernyavskiy explains. "With rosacea, the goal is not the strongest tan, the goal is something subtle and gradual that won’t irritate the skin barrier." Both experts recommend looking for gently, hydrating formulas—ideally fragrance-free and with minimal ingredients. "It's also a good idea to patch test any new self-tanner before applying it to your entire face," says Claghorn.
What ingredients should you look for in a facial self-tanner?
"I’d look for tanners made with high-quality, naturally derived DHA, as they lean more brown versus warm/orange," says Chernyavskiy. "I also love erythrulose because it can help create a softer, more natural-looking fade." The expert recommends running every potential new self-tanner through an acne-checker or consulting with your dermatologists before trying it on your skin, and she suggests keeping an eye out for extra skincare benefits. "I love seeing ingredients like squalane, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glycerin, and other hydrating or barrier-supporting ingredients," she states. "A facial self-tanner should not just give you color; it should help your skin look healthy while the tan develops."
Which ingredients should you avoid?
"I’d avoid facial tanners with a lot of alcohol because they can dry out the skin and cause an uneven fade," says Chernyavskiy.
