As a beauty editor, I've never had more questions about collagen supplements than over the past year. Previously, there was limited evidence on the effectiveness of collagen supplementation as part of enhancing our skincare routine, and early supplements were generally met with a lot of scepticism from experts. However, in recent years, the evidence around collagen supplementation for your skin is now far more compelling, and formulas are increasingly becoming more innovative and effective in bringing the skin-boosting benefits to our complexion.

Of course, collagen supplements can't replace a good skincare routine, a healthy diet or daily SPF application, but they can be a great way to support your skin from the inside out. Skincare such as serums or LED masks can only do so much superficially, and a collagen supplement can help to boost your results from the inside out. Especially if you're also undergoing collagen-inducing treatments such as laser or microneedling.

To help find the best collagen supplements around, I've rallied the Who What Wear UK editors to try and test different collagen supplements over the past three months. But first, I've enlisted the expertise of Dale Pinnock, 'The Medicinal Chef' and nutritionist, to take us through what we should know about collagen supplements and what to look for.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is the body's most abundant structural protein. It provides strength and support to tissues, including the skin, joints, bones and blood vessels," says Pinnock. "In the skin, collagen helps maintain firmness, elasticity and hydration. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, contributing to wrinkles, thinning skin and a loss of elasticity. Those concerned with skin ageing, reduced elasticity, dryness or menopausal skin changes are likely to benefit the most," he says.

What Does Research Say About Collagen Supplements?

In the early days of collagen supplements, there was a lot of scepticism around their efficacy. However, growing research is now showing that they can indeed bring benefits to our skin. "In the early days of collagen supplements, I would say it was deserving of that scepticism, but we have moved on light years from those first crude products," says Pinnock. "The evidence has strengthened considerably over the past decade. Multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses have shown that collagen supplementation can improve skin hydration, elasticity and the appearance of fine lines. What's becoming increasingly clear is that the benefits depend not only on the amount of collagen consumed, but also on the type of collagen peptides being delivered and how effectively they are absorbed," he says.

However, a collagen supplement cannot be a replacement for a balanced and varied diet. "Collagen should be viewed as part of a broader healthy ageing strategy that includes a nutrient-rich diet, adequate protein intake, sleep and sun protection," says Pinnock.

"The most exciting developments in this area are not necessarily about taking more collagen, but about delivering the most biologically active collagen peptides in forms the body can efficiently absorb and utilise. It is also worth noting that benefits tend to be enhanced when individuals take other steps to signal collagen synthesis through skin care, etc." In other words, collagen supplements work best when used in conjunction with a good skincare routine, a healthy diet and collagen-inducing treatments.

What to Look For

There are also different forms of collagen to suit different dietary requirements. "Marine collagen is rich in Type I collagen, the main collagen found in skin, making it particularly popular in beauty-focused products," says Pinnock. "Bovine collagen typically contains both Types I and III collagen, which also support connective tissues. Vegan products don't contain collagen itself, but instead provide nutrients that support the body's own collagen production," he says.

However, not all collagen is created equal. "I would look beyond simply 'hydrolysed collagen' and consider the form of collagen being used," says Pinnock. "Smaller bioactive peptides, particularly collagen tripeptides, are attracting significant scientific interest because they appear to be absorbed more efficiently and may stimulate collagen production within the skin more effectively. There is simply more getting where it needs to go to do the job," he says.

"Traditionally, powders have been the most popular format, but the industry is increasingly moving towards more targeted approaches. Increasingly, the focus is shifting away from taking the highest possible dose and towards ensuring the body can absorb and utilise those peptides effectively," says Pinnock. "Liquid collagen tripeptide formulations combined with advanced delivery systems such as liposomal technology are particularly interesting because they address both peptide size and bioavailability."

Editor Review: "As a beauty editor, I’d already heard lots of good things about Wild Nutrition, and so I was very excited to put its Collagen 500 Plus to the test. I had spoken to a handful of nutritionists at the start of testing, all of whom reassured me that this was a very good collagen supplement. So, I had a great first impression from the get-go," says beauty editor Eleanor Vousden.

"This supplement contains hydrolysed marine collagen and comes in powder form, and is housed in a sleek jar that looks good on your kitchen counter, too. Truthfully, I’ve tried a few marine collagen supplements prior and was immediately worried it would taste fishy. But to my surprise, I couldn’t detect it in my morning cappuccino at all. It’s unflavoured, and whilst it does have a subtle aftertaste mixed into water, in stronger flavoured drinks, it’s basically undetectable. I took a teaspoon of the supplement each day, and it easily mixed into my coffee (but it did reduce the froth in my coffee, FYI).

"Ingredients-wise, this marine collagen powder has 500 Dalton-weight peptides, which is the optimal low-molecular weight for effective bioabsorption into the body. Alongside this, you’ll find mesoporosil, which helps to aid absorption, along with biotin and vitamins E and C, which work in tandem to increase collagen production. I was grateful that I didn’t experience any digestive issues with this supplement, and the powder was easy to mix into hot and cold drinks.

"After the first month, I started noticing some changes in my skin. It felt much softer and smoother to the touch, and in the following second and third months, I could see the results compounding. My skin looks plumper and glowier, and the fine lines have definitely softened since I've been taking this supplement. I haven’t yet seen a difference in my hair and nails, but I’m really happy with the changes I’ve seen in my skin. I’m particularly excited to continue this supplement after collagen-inducing treatments such as microneedling, as I feel this would really enhance the results from the inside out.

"It’s definitely on the more expensive side, however, having seen visible results and having had the seal of approval from nutritionists, too, I wholeheartedly think it’s worth the investment, given it's not the most expensive on our list of supplements we tested. Buying a three-month supply or subscribing monthly gives the best value for money and allows enough time to see if this supplement is for you. But all in all, I’d definitely continue buying this."

3. Elle Sera Liposomal Tripeptide Collagen

Editor Review: "As I get deeper into my 30s, I’m convinced that collagen is essential for good skin maintenance. I already use a collagen oil on my face whenever I shower. But, after reading somewhere that the only way to get the full benefits is to ingest the abundant protein, I’ve been on the lookout for a supplement that lives up to the skin-hydrating, nail-boosting hype," says senior fashion & beauty editor for branded content, Felicia Pennant.

"The chocolate collagen powder I previously tried didn’t taste good, so I was excited to try the Elle Sera Liposomal Tripeptide Collagen, which promised: 'firmer, glowing skin in 30 days'. It’s supposed to trigger the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in my skin, and the weighty white box wasn’t dissimilar to a perfume discovery set. When I opened the first box, I was intrigued to discover what looked like 28 gold crayons inside. One of these liquid collagen ampoules was recommended per day, and I took great delight in snapping the caps and knocking them back like neat shots to add some play to my day.

"Fortified with vitamin A, C, E, biotin, zinc and lycopene, the collagen itself is the world’s first liposomal tripeptide. Engineered by scientists to survive digestion and break down in the bloodstream for better absorption, I would describe the taste, colour and smell as adult Calpol—fine, somehow nostalgic and less sweet than the children's version. I don’t recall an aftertaste or any digestive issues when taking these supplements, and I appreciate that the process wasn’t messy. In fact, it was a relief not to have another pill to remember to take. Because the ampoules were sealed, they were easy to throw in my handbag and take on the go.

"Three months later, I definitely feel like my nails are stronger and my skin bounces back faster when pressed. I didn’t wear much foundation before, and I’ve stopped altogether, in favour of quick swipes of concealer, because my skin seems brighter too. The overall experience felt elevated and more premium than sucking a pouch or stirring powder into water. The only con is that I wasn’t able to pinpoint the supplement as the specific catalyst for these positive changes. At £69.95 per box, Elle Sera Liposomal Tripeptide Collagen is not the most affordable option, but if you believe that health is wealth and prefer an advanced scientific formula, it’s an investment worth making. I’d rate it as 8.5 out of ten, and I have no plans to stop taking it."

4. Beauty Pie Chollagen Collagen Powder Hydrolysed Marine Collagen Peptides

Editor Review: "I tested the Beauty Pie Chollagen Collagen Powder, and it’s safe to say that this supplement has become a key part of my daily routine. The collagen comes in the form of a chocolatey-tasting powder that you can mix in with your coffee, smoothie, milk or so on. I’ve been adding one scoop to my morning coffee to create an at-home mocha with all the added collagen benefits," says deputy beauty editor, Grace Lindsay.

"The product itself contains hydrolysed marine collagen peptides, alongside cacao, biotin and a vitamin C food supplement. Unlike other collagen I’ve tried, it doesn’t have a super strong smell, and honestly, it tastes just like hot chocolate powder, meaning I actually look forward to taking it every single day. I’ve tested collagen sachets in the past, and whilst they are a lot easier to take on the go, they just don’t taste good, which means I’d often forget to take them consistently. Although this product is a little bit more of a faff, as you do have to mix it in with a drink in the morning, the taste is so good that it’s totally worth it.

"I love the fact that the powder contains biotin and vitamin C alongside collagen, as it feels like you are getting so many benefits in one. Since taking it consistently, I’ve noticed the biggest difference in both my hair and nails. In fact, my hairdresser actually said she’d never seen my hair in such good condition, and considering I haven’t changed much else in my routine, I’m putting it down to this. My nails are also growing longer and breaking less, which is a huge bonus. The only downside is that I’ve not noticed a huge difference in my skin, but my friends have commented that I look glowier, so perhaps it’s more of a subtle change that I’m yet to notice in myself.

"The only thing I could fault is the bulky packaging. Whilst it's not an issue when I’m at home, the tub is super bulky, which makes it basically impossible to travel with. I’d love the brand to bring out an on-the-go version, but until then, I will definitely continue to buy the bigger size."

5. Agent Nateur Holi (Mane) Marine Collagen

Editor Review: "Here’s a confronting fact for you—our body’s natural collagen production begins to decline 1% to 1.5% every year once you reach your mid-twenties. Mercifully, I was alerted to this fact just in the nick of time. I had just turned 25, so I was at the perfect juncture to intervene and try to rectify any losses I might’ve suffered through this natural ageing process. "Now, I began testing this product as an existing fan of the brand. I use the Holi (Mag) Magtein Advanced Daily Magnesium Complex, as the name suggests, every night as a key part of my evening wind-down routine, so I knew a good thing was promised when it came to testing its collagen powder. And that’s not even mentioning the fact that the beauty supplement has won countless awards and is one of the brand’s best-selling products. Suffice to say, after testing this product for several weeks, Agent Nateur has become a ritualistic part of my life, with the collagen powder helping me start my day and the magnesium liquid helping me end it.

"As for the collagen itself, one of the things that piqued my interest the most was the formula itself. Made in collaboration with leading functional medicine practitioner Dr. Will Cole, the powder contains four types of marine collagen—types I, II, III and IV wild-caught North Atlantic cod, pollock and haddock collagen peptides—alongside pearl powder and more than 30 naturally occurring trace minerals and amino acids that “work synergistically to support healthy hair, glowing skin, and strong nails”, as the brand lists on their website.

"Despite the aquatic origins, the taste more resembled bone broth than anything too fishy, which was much more palatable when I was mixing it into my morning coffee. The taste wasn’t too pleasant, but it was worth the small sacrifice in knowing that with every sip, I was reaping the benefits of supporting skin elasticity, hydration, barrier strength and long-term wellness.

"What’s more, I can often have somewhat of a sensitive stomach, so whilst I’ll spare you the gory details of previous mishaps, I’m relieved to say that this didn’t upset my digestive tract one iota throughout the entire duration I was trying it. To provide the most comprehensive review, I was quite rigorous throughout the testing process to ensure the most accurate outcome. (It’s here I should note that I was on holiday in Bali for two weeks, which also certainly did contribute to my overall glow and lit-from-within effect.)

"All in all, I did find my skin was brighter and even-toned, my scalp felt healthier, and my nails felt less prone to breaking, so I have no hesitation in recommending this product. It is more expensive than other options on the market, and knowing that you really do have to use collagen every day to see real effects, it is quite the investment to make. However, given the quality of the ingredients themselves and the overall change I saw, I do feel like it’s worthwhile. Plus, with the brand advising that it’s suitable in any raw food or beverage dish from smoothies to salad dressings, I feel like I’m going to challenge myself to find new ways to incorporate it into my daily routine that’s outside of my wake-up latte. Collagen and caviar blinis, anyone?"

6. Dose & Co Collagen Protein Powder Chocolate

Editor Review: "I was tasked with testing Dose & Co’s Chocolate Collagen Protein and, I’ll admit, I went in with fairly low expectations. I’ve tried collagen powders before, and while I’ve always liked the idea of the potential benefits, the taste has often stopped me from making them part of my daily routine. This one completely surprised me," says managing editor Poppy Nash.

"Rather than having that unmistakable collagen flavour and smell (often described as slightly fishy), it tasted and smelt more like a lighter, less indulgent chocolate milkshake. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I started having it as a pudding after dinner every night! This supplement comes in powder form, with a recommended serving of 35g (around two heaped tablespoons), delivering 10g of collagen peptides alongside 20g of protein per serving. One of the biggest selling points for me is the added protein content. It feels like you’re getting more than just a beauty supplement, which is especially appealing for someone like me who generally struggles to get enough protein in their diet.

"I mixed mine with milk every day and found it blended really easily, with no chalky texture or annoying residue left at the bottom of the glass. I usually used my coffee machine milk frother—which I’m not entirely convinced the machine appreciated!—but it did the job perfectly. If you’re using just a spoon, expect to put in a little more effort.

"After using it consistently, I started noticing small but welcome changes: my skin looked clearer and bouncier, and my nails felt noticeably less brittle. I’m definitely planning to keep taking it, especially as I’m getting married later this year and want my skin to continue improving. The packaging also deserves a mention. I loved that there wasn’t a plastic measuring scoop hidden inside the tub—it’s been removed to reduce unnecessary waste, which feels like a nice touch. Based on my usage, I’d say one tub per month seems accurate, and since a simple tablespoon works for measuring, skipping the extra plastic scoop makes complete sense.

It has a genuinely lovely taste, it's easy to incorporate into a routine, has added protein benefits and is good value for money with thoughtful packaging. However, I’d love a little more guidance around alternative ways to serve it. Can it be added to coffee, or is it best enjoyed as a shake? If you’re not someone who wants to have a ‘milkshake’ every day, you might be better off with a creamer or gel form. Would I buy it again? Absolutely."

7. Absolute Collagen Skin Pro

Editor Review: "I’m always up for trialling a skin supplement. After all, if it’s science-led, research-backed and rigorously tested, what’s the harm in trying? I’m equally happy to try anything that might give me brighter, plumper and generally healthier-looking skin, so I started gulping down Absolute Collagen’s Skin Pro liquid collagen formula to see if it delivered on its promise of a visible transformation," says copy editor, Georgia Seago.

"Each dose comes in a single sachet, and you simply rip off the top and squeeze it into a drink or food to consume. You can also squeeze it straight into your mouth, which is what I do for ease. It has a tropical flavour but also kind of tastes a bit fishy (that’ll be the 8000mg of hydrolysed marine collagen in easy dose), and is a thick orange gel. It’s hardly delicious, but it’s totally fine once you chase it down with water. It also contains 120mg of vitamin C, 120mg of hyaluronic acid, 50ug (micrograms) of biotin and 16mg of niacin: all good stuff that contributes to the increased moisture, strength and overall health of skin, hair and nails. And the added vitamin C turned out to be really handy for me, because I’m taking iron and absorption is known to be boosted if swallowed with vitamin C, so taking my sachet would in turn remind me to pop an iron tablet.

"I didn’t experience any tummy issues with this, even if I took it on an empty stomach, and it was overall really easy to fit into my routine. I haven’t noticed any huge differences, but I’d say my skin does seem more hydrated in general, and there’s a slight improvement in my psoriasis patches, which have appeared less dry and irritated. I also had a few red patches around my nose, which have cleared up. I would keep taking Skin Pro to give it a real chance at improving skin dryness, but for me, the packaging is a barrier. Unfortunately, single-use plastic sachets are pretty wasteful, so I’d love to see the brand figure out a more environmentally friendly option."

When to Take Collagen

Timing is far less important than consistency," says Pinnock. "Whether it's taken in the morning, evening or alongside a meal, the key is daily use. Most of the studies showing benefits have involved continuous supplementation for at least two to three months. I personally take it in the morning or throw it in my post-workout shake," he says.

Who Should Avoid Collagen Supplements?

"People with fish allergies should avoid marine collagen products, and anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication should consult a healthcare professional before starting supplementation," says Pinnock.

How We Tested

Our editors tested a range of different collagen supplements over the course of three months to evaluate the benefits for our skin, hair and nails.
