Mary Jane Flats
Last fall, we were bowled over by the resurgence of mary jane heels. Everywhere we looked we spotted skinny stilettos and chunky wedges bearing the notorious ankle strap. Maybe it happened because patent leather became popular again, maybe it was seeing Lindsay all over town in her Miu Miu version, but whatever the reason, it was clear the shoe style was back.
While the first wave of the mary jane invasion was limited to heels, now a year later fashion frontrunners are turning to flat versions. They're the perfect update of last season's ballet flat and look equally sweet with a dress (as most of the ladies above wore them) or with narrow jeans (as Mandy Moore wore them). While Keira, Nicole, and Kate are all wearing summery outfits, mary jane flats also looks adorable when worn with tights-just throw a pair on under your lightweight dress, grab a sweater, and you're good to go when the weather cools down.
Nicole and Mandy are both wearing Lanvin's MaryJane Ballet shoes, available in red or black patent leather at Barneys ($525, barneys.com). BCBG's Celena black patent version is a great substitute for the Lanvin flats ($201.95, zappos.com
) or you could try an even less expensive pair like Aerosole's Quebec mary janes, available in black patent or silver leather ($80, piperlime.com).
