Vacation Trends Come and Go, But These 6 Have Officially Been Left in the Dust

If there is a category in your wardrobe that will be introduced to more trends than any other, it’s the vacation department. For me, a vacation is quite literally a fashion show. I save my best outfits for my travels overseas and throughout the States. Planning for these exhilarating getaways is the best part. I put together PowerPoint presentations for the people traveling with me to scope out the vibes and make sure we wear coordinating outfits.

With all of the feathers, embellishments, and jaw-dropping pieces that dance around my suitcase when I travel, there’s occasionally a moment when an item from a previous trip no longer resonates with me. I do my best to buy only timeless vacation pieces, but flash-in-the-pan trends can happen to the best of us. I am planning my next vacation, which will take me to Turks and Caicos, and that means it’s time to audit my vacation wardrobe. Below, find the six things I’m not into anymore.

Skipping: Tie-Dye T-Shirts

Shopping: Roberto Cavalli Inspired Animal Prints

There was a time when I just had to get my hands on a tie-dye T-shirt. That youthful camp-inspired look used to be a vibe. When it comes to prints, I’m currently into more elevated options, and the best style right now just so happens to be animal prints inspired by Roberto Cavalli’s iconic prints. Think elegant snakeskin and leopard-printed maxis. Yup, animal prints are officially back in business.

Skipping: Daisy Dukes

Shopping: Linen Pants

Super short shorts had a moment for me during my college days, but I’m honestly so over them now. Less is more, and somehow low-rise linen pants feel way sexier to me. They show off the fact that you’re a frequent flyer who knows how to style your swimwear in an effortlessly appealing way, and I’m here for it.

Skipping: Logomania Totes

Shopping: Raffia Accessories

I’m sorry, but logomania has no place in my home. I may be a maximalist, but I still tap into quiet luxury, and I think a good bag shouldn’t have to have a name on it. The trend to watch, however, is raffia accessories. Trust me when I say this trend isn’t going anywhere. The best part is you can wear it even when you’re not on vacation. I see people in West Village carrying their Dragon Diffusions and Bembien totes everywhere.

Shop the trend:

Skipping: Neon Swimsuits

Shopping: Asymmetrical One-Pieces

Sometimes family or business is involved with my vacations, which requires me to pack my more modest pieces. While halter-neck swimsuits were a trend not too long ago, I’m not really feeling them anymore. Instead, I’ve stocked up on interesting one-pieces that still feel alluring without showing too much skin for occasions where I want to be more conservative with my beachwear.

Shop the trend:

Skipping: Puffy Sandals

Shopping: Elevated Flip-Flops

From a bag to a pair of sandals, studded statement accessories once had my attention, but I’ve moved on. Elevated leather flip-flops scream luxury in all the right ways. Plus, they’re extremely comfortable.

Shop the trend:

Skipping: Poncho Style Cover-ups

Shopping: Classic Button-Downs

There are a lot of cover-ups currently living in my burn book, and unfortunately, poncho-style cover-ups are one of them. Sometimes wearing an oversize button-down is just way more fun.

Associate Editor

Sierra Mayhew was always destined to work in fashion, but she didn't know it at first. Growing up with no choice but to wear a rotation of school uniforms and activewear, her love for fashion really blossomed when she moved away for college and was able to finally define her very own personal style. Shortly thereafter, she interned at Elle magazine and instantly knew that editorial was for her. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, she worked for ShopBazaar, contributing regularly to Bazaar.com, and finally made her way to Who What Wear, where she is an associate editor. When she’s not working, you can catch her always trying to catch a flight, rollerblading through New York City traffic, or exploring the latest luxury vintage boutique.
