My Mom and I Live in L.A.—We Think These Elevated Basics Are In
As someone born and raised in L.A., I live in basics. Truthfully, I got it from my mom. When I was growing up, her uniform included jeans and T-shirts, oversize sweaters, and menwear-inspired trousers. It was the '90s, after all. Of course, there was that blip when we both fell for Juicy tracksuits in the early aughts, but I digress.
My mother keeps everything too. If you were to take a look inside her closet, pieces that she wore 20 years ago are still in her daily rotation. That's because she's always relied on choosing basics intentionally, another trait I've inherited. When I shop, I look for pieces that feel slightly more special than your run-of-the-mill everyday wear. This means I'll gravitate toward a sweeping maxi skirt as opposed to a mid-length pencil skirt or an oversize tote in supple suede or leather because I know the material will wear in a way that'll only make it better with age.
If you want to elevate your basics game, look no further. I've narrowed down five must-have pieces that mom would surely approve of below.
Maxi Skirts
Bring on the drama with a floor-skimming maxi skirt. While mid-length styles are great, my mom and I like the statement quality of a longer choice.
Pointy Kitten Heels
Kitten heels will continue to take center stage in 2024. I'm partial to a classic pointed toe.
Wide-Leg Jeans
My mom and I have both sworn off skinny jeans in favor of wider styles. In my mind, the wider the flare, the better.
Oversize Tote Bags in Luxurious Materials
Extra-large totes are set to be one of this year's biggest trends. Make your bag stand the test of time by buying it in luxurious leather or suede.
Chocolate-Brown Knits and Trousers
Sweaters and trousers in shades of chocolate brown are all I want to buy right now. They're even better when worn together.
