I'm 25, and My Mom Is 57—We Collect Designer But Love These Accessible Buys

We love a stylish mother-daughter duo, and there's a new pair on my radar. Susie Cohen is the owner of a vintage consignment store with amazing picks, so it's no surprise that her daughter Sophie (known on social media as Soco) is just as well-dressed. I've been enjoying seeing them hanging out and exchanging style tips on TikTok, so I had to learn more.

How have you influenced each other's personal style?

Sophie Cohen: I think we both are always taking inspiration from each other when it comes to personal style. Sometimes, I will put on an outfit and think that I look like a spitting image of my mom. We both gravitate toward the same closet staples: a great baggy jean, an oversize blazer, and, of course, a pop of color. My mom says that I have inspired her to step outside of her comfort zone and dress outside the lines. Susie always looks the most chic, and I always try to emulate her energy when I get dressed in the morning. We are always discussing what brands we love and what pieces we want to add to our wardrobe. There is also nobody that knows my style better than my mom; she always knows what to pick out for me and understands the way I dress to a T.

Are there any items that you love to borrow from her closet and vice versa?

Sophie: Our closets are constantly interchanging! Every time I go home, I come back with a couple of my mom's goodies. My favorite item at the moment that I stole from Susie are her classic nude-and-black Chanel ballet flats that she found at her store. I am very lucky that my mom has been so kind to pass down so many vintage designer purses to me as well. When I go to visit her, I pack light, knowing I will most likely steal her pieces and, of course, need to leave room in my suitcase for all the purchases from her store! Susie loves my costume jewelry, and occasionally, she'll steal her shoes right back from me!

How did your vintage boutique come to be, and does Sophie ever help out with it?

Susie Cohen: Just like Sophie, I started my career in the fashion industry as a buyer at Bloomingdale's. Such a full-circle moment! It has been such an incredible journey to grow Refind as it has become one of the top luxury resale shops across the country. Soph is constantly helping out, even all the way from NYC. Even before I owned the shop, Soph would go in there and style looks for social media content. She is always posting us on her social media platforms, where we have gained so many customers from. She is also our best customer, almost always dressed in a Refind piece. She has connected us with many NYC fashion-industry consignors and customers and is always sharing our story to her network. And of course, whenever she is home, she is put right to work at the store! She works right alongside me, selling to customers, taking over our Instagram Stories, and, of course, modeling in our famous live shows. As a true fashionista, she is always in heaven being in the store surrounded by so many fabulous goodies!

Where do you source designer items from, and what do you look for in a good piece?

Susie: We source items from some of the best closets all over the country. We have incredible consigners that send us truly incredible gems. We look for pieces that are current, in great condition, and we know our customers will drool over. We work with a lot of stylists and high-profile clients that are key to sourcing the best possible goods. We are also constantly gaining insight into exactly what our customers are looking for from feedback on our Instagram live shows and stories. We like to have something for everyone, as we curate a wide variety of contemporary, luxury, and up-and-coming brands at all different price points.

Now before we begin, describe your style in just a few sentences.

Sophie: My style is extremely girly, colorful, and funky. I gravitate toward special, unique pieces. I always love to stand out in a crowd. I shop pretty much entirely secondhand to curate eclectic looks that speak to my vibrant personality. I love using my style as a way to express myself and the things I love with the world. And of course, we can't forget about the color pink that makes up over half of my closet.

Susie: My style is very joyful and fun yet chic and classic. I love to mix pieces that normally wouldn't go together and incorporate pops of color. A great sneaker, white button-down, and pair of jeans are essentials to my everyday wardrobe. I love mixing high and low items.

Sierra Mayhew was always destined to work in fashion, but she didn't know it at first. Growing up with no choice but to wear a rotation of school uniforms and activewear, her love for fashion really blossomed when she moved away for college and was able to finally define her very own personal style. Shortly thereafter, she interned at Elle magazine and instantly knew that editorial was for her. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, she worked for ShopBazaar, contributing regularly to Bazaar.com, and finally made her way to Who What Wear, where she is an associate editor. When she’s not working, you can catch her always trying to catch a flight, rollerblading through New York City traffic, or exploring the latest luxury vintage boutique.
