Trust Me: Every Chic Londoner Is Wearing One of These 6 Elegant Staples This Summer
Who What Wear UK editors are picky when it comes to adding to our wardrobes, but NET-A-PORTER always has us covered. These are the summer pieces one editor has her eye on for her new-season summer-in-the-city capsule.
I've lived in London my entire life, so it's safe to say I take the title of "Londoner" pretty seriously. Over the years, I've developed a very particular set of city skills: I know how to get from East to West with the fewest Tube changes possible (thank you, Lizzie line!), I know exactly where to head in Soho for a drink that feels a world away from tourist central and, perhaps most importantly, I've mastered the art of dressing for London's famously unpredictable summers. In fact, as I approach my 30th year, I think it's safe to say that I've finally perfected it.
When it comes to summer dressing in London, there's one key lesson: always be prepared for extremes. The ideal summer city capsule is filled with versatile pieces that can handle not only the ever-changing weather (something we've experienced firsthand over the past few weeks), but also ever-changing plans. Because aren't the best summer days the ones that start with an early coffee with a friend and somehow end at sunset, sitting outside a bar with people you've only just met? I think so.
The beauty of a London summer capsule? It will work for any other European city, too. Now just to book that holiday...
The ability to be spontaneous is what I love most about a London summer. Whilst the weather is never guaranteed, the joy of it somehow always is. That's exactly why a reliable capsule wardrobe becomes essential, and within it, there are six key pieces I always rely on to do the heavy lifting.
Luckily for me—and for you—NET-A-PORTER has curated the ultimate edit of summer-in-the-city buys. Think easy dresses, elegant co-ords, sandals that are comfortable enough for long walks yet polished enough for dinner plans and, of course, great denim. In short, everything you need for navigating a London summer and looking incredibly chic doing so. Keep scrolling to shop my edit of the best pieces for the season, courtesy of NET-A-PORTER.

1. Simple Midi Dresses
Style Notes: In my opinion, nothing beats a great midi dress. The best are ones you are happy to wear with flip-flops to the farmers' market, with a kitten heel for dinner and with a ballet flat in the office. These four tick this box.
2. Shorts Co-Ords
Style Notes: If you haven't yet invested in a shorts-and-top co-ord, I urge you to consider it for your next payday buy! I never used to be into shorts until a few years ago, when I realised that a matching set was just what my wardrobe was missing. Either go for something classic, like a neutral linen style, or be a little more playful with a fun print or bold colour.
3. Broderie Blouses
Style Notes: This one is sort of cheating as I think a broderie blouse is a year-round staple, but there's no denying they come into their own in summer. Wear your prettiest blouse with jeans, shorts or a skirt. The options are endless!
4. Great Denim
Style Notes: We all know that a London summer isn't just heatwave after heatwave, and so it pays to be prepared with some great denim in your arsenal to wear with blouses, shirts or tanks.
5. Comfy Sandals
Style Notes: Summer in the city undoubtedly means a lot of walking, but that doesn't mean you need to scrimp on style. The four pairs of sandals below are comfy (tried-and-tested), but also incredibly chic. What's not to love?
6. A Fabulous Tote
Style Notes: Finally, you need a gorgeous tote bag that you can throw everything in and take around with you, no matter what your day has in store. Basket bags, of course, are a summer classic, but a canvas style is also lovely.
