Everyone knows the iconic phrase, "spring cleaning," so it's shocking to me that fall doesn't have a similar saying. The start of any new season calls for new beginnings, and for me, that means a rigorous closet clean-out. This resulted in a weekend spent at home picking through the items that I was desperate to hold onto, insistent that even though I hadn't worn them in over a year, I would wear them soon. Needless to say, a little tough love was required.

Three large trash bags later, I am so ready to start filling in the empty spaces with my favorite fall buys—chunky sweaters, boots, and denim being the star players. My closet clean-out made me think about my fellow fashion editors and what they may be getting rid of for this upcoming season.

After getting their answers, I'm feeling inspired for round two of the closet clean-out that started it all. Below, find seven items fashion editors are ditching for fall, plus their chic replacements.

Skip: Military-Inspired Jackets

Wear: Oversize Leather Jackets

I still have a lot of love for a good utilitarian military jacket, but with new trends coming in, I am going to have to make room in my closet and toss mine into the donation pile. Since leather jackets have skyrocketed in the trend department lately, I have absolutely fallen in love with them and a few have joined my closet as of late. I prefer an oversize style and will do whatever it takes to squeeze maybe one or two more in.

Skip: Knit Vests

Wear: Tailored Waistcoats

"Waistcoats have been trending all year long, and this season, I'm ready to prioritize them over any other top style. In seasons prior, I would have opted for a coordinated ensemble with a matching blazer and pants, but now, I'm finding even more ways to incorporate tailored vests into my day-to-day looks for maximum versatility. I love their effortless, ready-for-business feel. At this point, they've completely eclipsed the sweater vests I wore a lot last fall."

Skip: Puff-Sleeve Sweaters

Wear: Oversize Sweaters

"I'm realizing that I acquired many puff-sleeve sweaters over the past few years and they feel a bit too precious for my wardrobe now, and not as fresh as they once were. This fall, I'm trading them for more classic, oversize styles that transcend seasons. Think Totême."

Shop:

Skip: Fitted Knits

Wear: Even More Oversize Sweaters

"I basically just want to live in oversize sweaters this season—especially with baggy jeans. While I love a more fitted turtleneck (especially for layering purposes), I'll probably be storing a lot of my fitted knits this season."

Shop:

Skip: Skinny Jeans

Wear: Straight-Leg and Looser Silhouettes

"I finally donated a mountain of skinny jeans I’ve accumulated over the years but never seem to wear anymore. I much prefer straight-leg and looser silhouettes that feel fresh and suit my body type."

Shop:

Skip: Chelsea Boots

Wear: Heeled Boots

"While there was a time when my Chelsea boots were my favorite thing in my shoe closet, currently, wearing a flat boot just feels weird to me. Even if it's a kitten heel or a slight platform, it's enough for me. A heeled boot adds the perfect finishing touch to the entire ensemble even when I'm wearing something simple like an oversize sweater and leggings."

Shop:

Skip: Cropped Pants (For Now)

Wear: Longer, Looser, Puddle Pants

"While I don’t think cropped pants will ever be completely out, I’ve been gravitating towards the longer, looser puddle pant styles that have been picking up steam this year."
