20 Buys That Prove Black Tailored Trousers Are the Ultimate Staple
Black tailored trousers are the perfect example of how a classic item of clothing can be interpreted in countless ways yet remain versatile and timeless. One day, I might be in the mood for a more close-fitting silhouette to balance out a slouchy knit, while another will see me reaching for a dramatic wide-leg pair. This season, I have been on the hunt for the perfect pair of low-rise black trousers. Granted, I already own a classic cigarette pair from Cefinn and a very fun '70s-inspired flared pair from L'Agence, but I've been specifically looking for something in a slouchier, hip-skimming fit. Every style brings something different to the table.
It appears as though fashion designers have clocked on to the power of black tailored trousers this season, with countless iterations making their way down the runways of the industry's heavy hitters. Saint Laurent remained loyal to its polished cause, sending models out in crisp, high-waisted flares, styled with cropped blazers and oversized sunnies. For Stella McCartney, it was all about the slouch, with trousers hanging from the hips and puddling on the floor. Meanwhile, at COS, the super-wide leg was the silhouette of choice—perfect with strong, square-toed flats.
I know some will associate black trousers with work, but in my experience, they actually lend themselves surprisingly well to more casual looks. I mean, is there anything cooler than black trousers styled with a white tee, sneakers and fringed suede jacket? I think not. If you're still not convinced, then maybe keep an eye out for trousers with an elasticated waist (Arket has some great options) and keep your accessories casual. Both will help remove any corporate associations.
So whatever your trouser silhouette of choice, scroll down to see and shop the best black tailored trousers to love this season.
Wide-Leg Trousers
Bringing both drama and polish to any outfit, wide-leg trousers have a definite French-girl nonchalance to them. I prefer to keep my top half more fitted to balance out the silhouette (a ribbed roll-neck does the job nicely), but it can also look very cool to embrace the slouch with an oversized blazer.

Tapered Trousers
A true wardrobe classic, tapered (or cigarette) trousers will pretty much go with everything in your wardrobe. Typically, they come with a close, tailored fit that narrows at the ankle, but many brands have been offering up a looser spin this season, such as this fab & Other Stories pair.

Flared Trousers
Having made a comeback in recent seasons thanks to the '70s renaissance, flared trousers are a great option for more formal events. Take your cues from the Saint Laurent runway, and style yours with platforms and a cropped blazer. I would recommend trying on one size up, as often, flares can look better when cut looser on the body.

Low-Slung Trousers
This Stella McCartney look is essentially my inspo for my 2022 trouser search. I love how low-rise trousers have an easier, more androgynous edge, which reflects the way that more brands are bringing out gender-neutral collections right now. Wear with a chunky knit now, and then swap in an untucked stripe shirt and chunky sandals come spring.
