Not All Body Scrubs Are Made Equal—These Are the Ones Beauty Editors Rate
A body scrub is considered a beauty-editor essential in any body care routine— these are the best.

Laura Pearson
I’ll be completely honest—I used to be pretty lax when it came to my body-care regimen. While I was slathering my face with cleanser, toner, moisturiser and SPF, my body would watch on from the sidelines, feeling well and truly ghosted. I mean, can you blame me? In the colder months the last thing I want to do is stand nakey-nakey-naked (one for my Rhi Rhi fans) while I cover every inch of my body in cream.
However, as I’ve entered my late twenties, I recently had a word with myself and said: enough is enough. I really have no excuse, especially as I often get sent such beautiful body-care products to try. I vowed to make a change and never leave my body on unread again, and boy, have I seen a difference. The one body-care product I have entered into a pretty serious relationship with is the humble body scrub. Before body creams, serums, oils and body creams come into the equation, it’s important to have a good base to work with, and that’s why I now consider a body scrub to be a non-negotiable in my beauty regime.
Below, I've rounded up my favourite body scrubs out there, as well as tapped the experts for all the info on why a body scrub is well worth investing in.
What Are the Benefits of a Body Scrub?
"The skin’s natural desquamation process (shedding of dead cells) happens daily,” explains Elizabeth King, holistic facialist and skincare expert for Weleda. "But as we age or even the changing season from winter into spring, this process may be sluggish and in need of a little help.
"A weekly body scrub can do wonders for instant revitalisation of the skin, stimulating circulation and thereby encouraging cellular activity. Your skin feels instantly softer and smoother and you’ll find you use less body lotion while also having a better moisturising result.”
According to Dr Alexis Granite, consultant dermatologist and founder of Joonbyrd, "Body scrubs have a multitude of benefits including: exfoliating dead skin cells, revealing smoother, more radiant skin; stimulating circulation and skin cell renewal; unclogging pores, reducing ingrown hairs and breakouts; enhancing absorption of leave-on products such as body lotions, oils and serums; and refining skin texture, leaving it feeling softer and smoother."
If you’re also a religious tanner like me—shout-out to my fake tan Thursday crew––it really is a step you shouldn’t overlook. Creating a faux glow on the likes of Amy Jackson, Lilah Parsons and Vogue Williams, Celebrity tan artist Nadine Sereaton says preparation is key. "It helps unclog the pores and also prevents ingrown hairs and razor bumps so the skin is smoother and your tan will be a lot more even,” Sereaton says, noting that if you're using a scrub that contains oil pre-fake tan, rinse off thoroughly with soap or shower gel so it doesn't create a barrier.
How to Use a Body Scrub
"To get the most out of your scrub, lightly dampen your skin under the shower,” says King. "Turn the shower head off and, with circular movements, work up your limbs towards your heart. Create circles over the tummy in a clockwise direction and down the sides of your back onto the buttocks. Turn the shower head back on and use sweeping movements towards your heart to rinse.” If you’re prepping before fake tan, Sereaton says to focus on dry areas like the elbows, knees, around the ankles and feet.
Dr Alexis Granite expands by advising that when you're finished, ensure you "pat dry and avoid rubbing, and follow with moisturiser to lock in hydration, softness and to reinforce the skin barrier."
What to Look for in a Body Scrub
Granite advises that there are a number of factors we should consider when evaluating a body scrub and determining if it's right for us. She breaks this down into four steps:
- "Gentle exfoliation – a scrub should have small, smooth grains to remove dead skin without micro-tears or irritation."
- "Formulation texture – It should glide on without dragging and rinse clean without residue. Also a scrub should be able to hold it’s shape prior to application and ideally lather as well."
- "Active ingredients – Hydrating, soothing and brightening ingredients beyond the exfoliant can boost efficacy."
- "Visible results – Smoother texture and improved radiance are all signs a scrub is working."

I just got back from a four-week trip to South America, and this scrub came with me. The roasted coffee grinds gently polish away dead and dry skin while the coconut oil floods the skin with plenty of moisture. Plus, I can't put into words just how good it smells.
Pros
- Coffee scent for awakening the skin and senses
- Soothing & anti-bacterial
Cons
- It's a messy one
- If you're not a coffee fan, you won't like this
2. Sanctuary Spa Signature Natural Oils Salt Scrub
Best for a Deep Exfoliation
"This intensely exfoliates and deeply nourishes," says Sereaton. "The salt buffs away dead skin while coconut and jojoba oil moisturise, leaving a gorgeous scent behind."
Pros
- Very effective exfoliation
- Affordable option
Cons
- Might be too harsh for sensitive skin
3. Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Body Scrub
Best Nourishing Body Scrub
I've long been a fan of Sol de Janeiro, and there's always something from the brand going viral on TikTok. Scented with the signature Cheirosa ’62 fragrance, this acrub contains a gorgeous blend of sugar crystals and crushed Cupuaçu seeds. Layer with the buttery-rich Brazilian Bum Bum Cream for seriously soft skin. Freelance beauty editor and Who What Wear contributor Laura Pearson counts this as a favourite. "The smell of this is like summer heaven in a tub, but it's the way it makes your skin feel afterwards. As well as exfoliating the skin, it has the brand's hero Cupuaçu butter, which moisturises like a dream, along with coconut oil and soothing rice extract," she says.
Pros
- Smells like summer holidays
- Incredibly moisturising
- Invigorates with caffeine-rich guaraná
Cons
- Not the cheapest, but you're paying for that signature scent
4. Weleda Birch Body Scrub
Best Purifying Body Scrub
An oldie but a goldie. "Added ingredients like birch extract support the skin’s elimination processes to purify and tone, while the rosemary extract stimulates blood circulation," says King. "Dull, dry skin is supported, and skin left glowing and invigorated while also becoming strengthened in the long term."
Pros
- Mess-free tube application
- Very affordable
- 100% natural
Cons
- It's not the most luxurious
5. Ouai Scalp & Body Scrub
Best Multi-Purpose Scrub
A deep-cleansing, foaming scrub that cleanses, detoxifies and softens. To also use on the scalp, just section wet hair and massage into the scalp in circular motions to gently exfoliate.
Pros
- Can be used on both scalp and body
- Full of moisturising ingredients
Cons
- A pricey option
6. Joonbyrd Violet Haze Body Scrub
Best Texture-Refining Body Scrub
Not only is the packaging aesthetically cute, but it's a very effective and enjoyable scrub too. Its sweet and slightly floral scent is one most will like, and it's full of active ingredients to improve the look of your skin as well as just exfoliate. Laura rates this one, too. "It has a carefully considered ingredients list. It exfoliates with sugar and chia seeds, and contains rich butters to moisturise the skin, and active ingredients to improve the look of the skin," she says.
Pros
- A pleasant marshmallow scent most will like
- Has niacinamide to refine skin texture
Cons
- One of the more expensive scrubs
7. Kate Somerville Exfolikate Resurfacing Body Scrub
Best Glow-Boosting Body Scrub
An award-winning body scrub that's particularly good for dry skin. Pumice, papaya, pineapple and pumpkin are just some of the hero ingredients that work together to give you a healthy all-over body glow in as little as one week.
Pros
- Exfoliates manually, as well as with BHA and fruit enzymes
- Handy tube application
Cons
- Sensitive skin might find this too harsh
- It's an expensive one
8. Omorovicza Gold Sugar Scrub
I love this ultra-luxe scrub––it transforms the bathroom into a home spa whenever I use it. The scent and texture are really beautiful, and leave your skin feeling soft and supple.
Pros
- Feels like an indulgent experience
- Beautiful, elevated scent
- Boosts micro-circulation
Cons
- A luxury buy with a price tag to match
9. Kora Organics Invigorating Body Scrub
Best Invigorating Scrub
I'm a big fan of Miranda Kerr's skincare line, and in particular, this scrub. Turmeric brightens, mineral powder gently exfoliates and rosehip seeds give skin a generous helping of vitamins. I'd also really recommend the Kora Organics Turmeric Brightening & Exfoliating Mask to bless your face with similar benefits.
Pros
- Gentle exfoliation with mineral powder
- Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
Cons
- You'll need to save your pennies for this one
10. ESPA Exfoliating Body Polish
Best Cooling Scrub
This relaxing scrub smells like your favourite spa. It's the perfect way to unwind after a long day. It uses apricot seed kernels to exfoliate the skin, and aloe vera to soothe and hydrate. The addition of spearmint is cooling for tired limbs.
Pros
- Relaxing spa-like scent
- Contains cooling spearmint
Cons
- Not one for sensitive skin
