I consider myself to be Who What Wear's resident rosacea expert. I was diagnosed with the chronic skin condition in my early 20s and have spent the better part of a decade testing all kinds of skin-soothing, redness-reducing products to find the best of the bunch. I've found the best foundations for rosacea. I've also found the best face washes for rosacea. Next up? I set out to create a list of the best sunscreens that will protect my skin and look and feel seamless without causing more irritation or exacerbating redness.
I did what any good beauty editor would do. I reached out to three top skin experts for a list of guidelines and recommendations. I read reviews. This is one of my favorite sunscreens for rosacea, and two top skin experts give it their hard-to-earn recommendation. "This is one of my most recommended sunscreens for rosacea," says Maro Mehdi, RN at Alchemy 43. "It contains zinc oxide for broad-spectrum protection along with niacinamide, which helps calm visible redness and supports the skin barrier. It's lightweight, layers well under makeup, and is well tolerated by sensitive skin."
Tama Tran, MSN, NP-C, a board-certified aesthetic nurse practitioner, agrees. She says it's "specifically formulated for sensitive, acne-prone, and rosacea-prone skin." She also calls out its niacinamide content for its redness-reducing and barrier-strengthening qualities.
In my experience, it doesn't leave an outrageous white cast the way other 100% mineral formulas do. It's also lightweight and nongreasy and doesn't smudge or pill under makeup. It's definitely the number one pick for a rosacea-friendly sunscreen.

Three skin experts recommend this tinted SPF because it protects the skin, is nonirritating, and offers lightweight coverage to disguise patchy redness. "This is another excellent mineral option for rosacea-prone skin," Mehdi says. "It provides broad-spectrum UV protection, has a lightweight texture, and the tinted formula can help reduce the appearance of redness while minimizing the white cast that some mineral sunscreens leave behind."

What gives this sunscreen an almost $150 price tag? It's a high-powered skin serum that happens to offer broad-spectrum SPF 30. With proprietary ingredients, plus tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and astaxanthin, it actually supports collagen synthesis and reverses past photodamage for calmer, firmer, younger-looking skin.
Tower 28 SOS FaceGuard SPF 30

After so much trial and error, I can confidently say that Tower 28's SOS FaceGuard SPF 30 is one of my favorite sunscreens, especially when I'm in the midst of a rosacea flare-up. The 100% mineral formula feels modern and elegant, and it's lightweight, nongreasy, and hydrating. Non-nano zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum UV protection, a ceramide blend supports the skin barrier, and soothing ingredients (allantoin and alpha bisabolol) calm redness. "The flexible tint also helps neutralize redness without feeling heavy." Flexible it is! I've found that this formula doesn't settle into fine lines or pores the way other tinted SPFs do. It moves with the skin, which gives it a natural "your skin but better" appearance.
Shiseido Urban Environment Mineral Clear Sunscreen SPF 50

This editor-favorite sunscreen protects against free radical damage caused by the potentially harmful pollutants common in city environments—think sun, car exhaust, etc. It's all thanks to a sheer-to-clear formula with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and ginkgo-leaf extract. The last two are powerful antioxidants.
As for the texture, it's milky, lightweight, and hydrating, which is why it works so well with makeup. Whenever I apply foundation or concealer over it, it looks flawless. There's no creasing, caking, or pilling whatsoever.

The milky, serum-like texture sinks effortlessly into my skin, and I never (I repeat never) deal with pilling, residue, or irritation. Aside from non-nano zinc, which gives it broad-spectrum sun protection, the hero ingredient is centalla asiastica—a plant extract known for its soothing and redness-relieving properties.
Goodal Heartleaf Soothing Zinc 100 Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Fun fact: Heartleaf is a trendy Korean ingredient used to soothe redness, irritation, and even acne. This sunscreen is chock-full of it, which explains why it's so comforting to my fiery, irritation-prone skin. It uses three kinds of zinc. Zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum sun protection. Zinc gluconate controls oil. Zinc lactate provides mild exfoliation. Together, they make this SPF a dream come true for rosacea, acne, and other inflammatory skin conditions.
What to Look for in a Sunscreen for Rosacea
All three experts agree that mineral sunscreens are best for rosacea, rather than chemical formulas. "Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide sit on the surface of the skin and reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them, making them much less likely to cause irritation or trigger a flare," Mehdi says. "Many people with rosacea already have a compromised skin barrier, so choosing a gentle, nonirritating sunscreen can make a noticeable difference in keeping redness under control."
However, Tran says it's better to use any sunscreen than no sunscreen, so if you'd rather skip mineral for chemical, feel free to do so. "The best sunscreen is ultimately the one you'll wear consistently," Tran says. "If a chemical sunscreen is well tolerated and broad-spectrum, it's still far better than skipping sunscreen altogether."
Aside from the category, it can be helpful to choose sunscreen that contains soothing ingredients. Think centella asiatica, allantoin, heartleaf, ectoin, and other gentle, inflammation-fighting ingredients. These will prevent and soothe rosacea flare-ups.
