I've Always Wanted Fuller-Looking Lips—This Unexpected Product Helped Me Get There Without Injectables
Lip liner stains are the secret to long-lasting makeup. One beauty editor shares her favourites.
You'd think that because I'm a beauty editor, I've always got a full face of makeup on, right? Wrong. When it comes to makeup, I am downright lazy, and only reach for quick, easy products that I don't need to top up throughout the day, which is why I never, ever wear lipstick. I've tried some of the best formulas on the market, but no matter what I do, my lipstick never lasts for more than a few hours. Because of this, I simply throw on some lip balm and rush out the door.
However, there's a new product emerging that is changing the game. I'm sure you've heard of lip stains, but have you ever come across a lip liner stain? A more precise version of the popular product, lip liner stains are perfect for those who like a defined lip that lasts all day. I've been testing some of the most popular ones over the last week or so, and have been so impressed by the results that I'm finding myself reaching for a lip liner stain daily. Not only do they look great, but they really last. No matter how many coffees I drink at my desk, my lip look is fully intact when I get home. Want to know more? 1. Summer Fridays Flushed Lip Stain
Number of shades: 6
Peel-off formula: No
Pros
- Easy to apply thanks to the super-fine nib
- Don't have to peel it off
- Feels hydrating on the lips
- Very long-lasting
Cons
- Would love to see more shades
First up, my favourite lip product at the moment. New from Summer Fridays, this lip stain isn't technically a lip liner, but it's my go-to for a defined, long-lasting look.
The super-fine nib is ideal for creating a perfect outline, and the lightweight tint feels hydrating on the lips (thank you, aloe vera and panthenol). You can, of course, use this all over, but I like to use it as a liner, then go in with a nude lip gloss or clear balm. It's not a peel-off formula, so it's quick and easy to apply, and trust me when I say that it lasts all day. It's marketed as a subtle tint, but I'd actually say the buildable formula makes quite a statement.
2. Sacheu Lip Liner Stay-N Peel Off Lip Stain
Number of shades: 13
Peel-off formula: Yes
Pros
- Long-lasting formula
- Beautiful finish
Cons
- Applicator is not that precise
- Can feel a little drying
- Have to wait 20 minutes before peeling off
If you want something that really won't budge, then let me get you onto the Sacheu lip liner stain. This is a peel-off formula, and while the doe-foot applicator isn't as precise as the option above, you can still get a really nice finish. The annoying thing is that you have to leave it on for up to 20 minutes before peeling it off, but trust me when I say that it's worth it for the long-lasting results.
It looks super dark when you first apply it, but once you remove the stain, you are left with a much more natural result. My top tips are to ensure your lips are hydrated beforehand, as this can cling to dry patches, and also to have a bit of cotton wool on hand for any parts that don't peel off straight away.
3. NYX Professional Makeup Lip Lingerie Lip Liner Stain
Number of shades: 12
Peel-off formula: No
Pros
- Affordable
- Precise applicator
- Quick to apply
- Good range of nude shades
Cons
- Not as long-lasting as others in this roundup
I can't stop raving about this lip liner stain from Nyx. It is one of the most precise liners I've tried, and you don't have to peel it off, so your lip look is complete in seconds. The transfer-proof formula feels really lightweight, and I've personally fallen in love with the selection of nude shades on offer.
It has an interesting ballpoint felt tip to create a sharp outline, but it does take a little longer if you want to use it all over the lips. The only downside I found with this one was that it wasn't as long-lasting as other formulas in this roundup, but apart from that, I can't fault it.
4. Sheglam Fall In Line Peel Off Lip Liner Stain
Number of shades: 7
Peel-off formula: Yes
A peel-off formula that really impressed me lately is the Sheglam Fall in Line Peel Off Lip Liner Stain. I tried the shade Pinky Promise, and when I wore it into the office, everyone complimented me on my lip look. Similar to the Sacheu liner above, this doesn't have the most precise applicator, and you do have to wait 10 to 20 minutes for it to dry, but it's another really long-lasting formula that makes my makeup look instantly put together.
Pros
- Some really nice shades available
- Long-lasting formula
Cons
- Have to wait a while for it to dry
- Applicator is not the most precise
5. Kulfi Lassi Lips Staining Lip Liner
Number of shades: 7
Peel-off formula: No
I'll be honest, I haven't tried this lip liner stain myself, but I have seen it all over social media, and I'm very tempted to give it a go. What I like about it is that the formula looks creamy and hydrating, meaning it applies like a typical lip liner, rather than a stain. You can also blend it before it dries, to create a more blurred finish if you prefer a more natural makeup look.
Pros
- Looks more hydrating than most formulas
- Can blend it into the lips for a blurred finish
Cons
- Popular shades are often out of stock
6. Wonderskin Wonder Blading All Day Lip Stain Peel Off Masque
Number of shades: 19
Peel-off formula: Yes
We've had the whole team testing the Wonderskin Wonder Blading All Day Lip Stain Peel Off Masque. The multi-tasker can be used as an all-over stain or a liner, depending on your desired finish. No, it's not the most precise applicator, as it's not typically used as a liner, but it's great for a softer outline. The formula is transfer-proof and comes in a wide range of shades. Just make sure to exfoliate your lips before applying!
Pros
- Lots of shades available
- Transfer-proof formula
- Can be used as a liner and a lipstick
Cons
- A little harder to get a super precise finish
- Can be a little fiddly to remove
- Clings to dry patches
