What should I wear to an outdoor concert?

Ah, music festival season: that magical time of year when it becomes acceptable to wear things like bra tops, flower crowns, and Daisy dukes on a day-to-day basis. And while celebrities like Kate Bosworth, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Diane Kruger have proven time and time again that the whole festival look can absolutely be chic, to replicate that level of style is sometimes tough.

While we love festival-inspired wear, being comfortable and functional trumps all for outdoor concerts. Here are some style tips from our resident celebrity stylists, Emily Current and Merritt Elliott—the ladies who make reader-favorites like Jessica Alba and Emma Roberts look good—to help make your summer all the more harmonious.

    Wear flats.

Heels are not allowed: go for flats instead! There are so many amazing options—gladiators, sneakers, d'orsay flats, slip-on slides, and booties—there’s sure to be a style that works with your look.

    Go with light fabrics.

Embrace breezy soft cottons, from pretty white Victorian-inspired tops to lightweight denim. A Navajo-print hippie dress or slouchy harem pants are also great options for an outdoor concert.

    Wear a hat, period.

It keeps the sun out of your face, and adds a little something to the most simple looks. Anything goes—from a brown felt western style to woven panama iterations.

    A button-up is your friend.

It’s all about lightweight button-ups—leave bulky sweaters and jackets at home. Bring a lightweight chambray or flannel shirt as your extra layer for cooler nights. You can tie it around your waist during the day!
